HIDDEN in the Redwoods of the Northern California Coast, just 6 miles from the Village of Mendocino, Big River Farm is a tranquil getaway just minutes from the Pacific Ocean, endless adventure, fine dining, and much more.
SITUATED on an old berry farm and fruit orchard, 'The Zendo' is a perfect rental for those looking for a quiet, cozy getaway just minutes from Mendocino.
A REDWOOD HOUSE nestled amongst the ferns and cherry trees, the Zendo can sleep up to 4 between its cozy BEDROOM w/ queensize bed and LIVING ROOM w/ queensize pullout sleeper couch.
LARGE KITCHEN is well-equipped for cooking and entertaining. A couple or individual could enjoy the spacious single bedroom house, or up to 4 guests can comfortably share an incredibly AFFORDABLE vacation house.
SURROUNDED by Big River State Forest land, Big River Farm is only 1 mile by hiking trails from the Big River to the Zendo, and hosts many enormous ANCIENT REDWOOD TREES.

This place was magical. The moment I stepped out of the car I was transformed to a sense of tranquility and peace. It was rainy for half our stay and I think that made it even better hearing and seeing the sounds of nature. I see why the Zendo gets a 10/10 rating.

Always a relaxing and blissful escape - so close to the ocean but nestled deep in the redwoods. The property manager Aaron is so quick to help with any needs (he set up a generator when the power was out and showed us how to use the wood burning stove). My only 9 this time is cleanliness. There were cobwebs in the living room by the TV and windows. Last stay the property was cleaned immaculately. They may have changed companies? It may be hard for people with mobility issues to get into the cabin, it’s rocky and uneven steps. A ramp would be helpful especially with luggage. I will always make this my destination of choice in mendo!

I didn’t want to leave the Zendo. It is the most magical space and land- a dream come true. Aaron, who is on site, was super friendly and helpful. Great location for exploring. Waiting until I can come back.

We loved the Zendo ! Pictures and words don't do this place justice. I have stayed in Mendocino 3 times previously but nothing compares to the Zendo. First of all the redwoods, ferns, green lush forest that this home sits in is just breathtaking. Every window (and there are many) frame a stand of redwoods. From the bed that is surrounded by windows, it is magical. Millions of stars ! The kitchen was well equipped, had everything you needed. We used the Charcoal grill to BBQ some great steaks we bought at Harvest Market in Mendocino. The Mendocino coast is beautiful and only minutes away. Be sure to walk down to the beach at Jug Handle State Reserve, also very near by. In summary I would say if you're lucky enough to stay at the Zendo while visiting the area " You're Lucky Enough" .

Peaceful, beautiful home in the redwoods

The Zendo on Big River Farm is a stunningly beautiful, lovingly crafted house surrounded by redwoods on a sweet property 10 minutes from the town of Mendocino. We loved the artistry and history of the house itself, the super comfortable bed with picture windows looking out into the forest, the sun peeking through the redwoods, the peace and quiet of the property. Thank you for a lovely and relaxing stay- we can't wait to return.

Peaceful and amazing stay among the redwoods

Our stay at this beautiful home nestled in the redwoods of Mendocino was truly magical. From the moment we arrived, we were captivated by the serene forest surroundings and the peaceful ambiance. The house itself was spotless, cozy, and thoughtfully equipped with everything we needed for a relaxing getaway. We loved sipping coffee on the deck each morning, listening to the birds and watching the sunlight filter through the towering trees. The location was perfect—close enough to Mendocino’s charming town and breathtaking coastal trails, yet secluded enough to feel like a private retreat. We left feeling refreshed, grateful, and already dreaming of our next visit! Thank you for the hospitality.

Cozy mountain retreat

Rustic, cozy and clean. We were welcomed with a cute basket of local snacks and wine. Loved the artwork and access to a trail off the property. Less than 10 minutes to our favorite dog friendly beach in Mendocino. Bring a book! Worked well for my husband and I and our two dogs. Would stay again. Steep walk way, so might be challenging for someone not sure on their feet.

My Zendo Kitchen in the woods.

The perfect place to relax and meditate while enjoying a fully equipped kitchen in the middle of the redwood forest. The wood stove in the living room is perfect to relax on the couch.We look forward to coming back.

Simply magical

This was our first trip to the red woods. My husband is a tree lover. And we were going to northern CA to celebrate his 50th birthday. We spent a couple of days here and I cannot tell you how AMAZING it was. We felt ONE with God's beautiful creations. I absolutely LOVE being outdoors and I LOVE windows. Having windows surrounding the bed made you feel like you were sleeping and waking up outdoors. The cottage is quaint and comfortable. Even though the weather was raining and cold, we still felt like being outdoors. The hostess is very communicative and helpful, providing her favorite places to eat and see. Highly recommend this for a couples get away.

A Five Star experience!

Nothing like a little green therapy.

The property was exactly as expected. Everything was seamless from check in to check out. The perfect home for a couple and a fur baby. If you like the idea of living surrounded by old growth trees and the sounds of nature this is the spot. We plan to return many times.

Perfect secluded getaway

Only 6 miles from the e PCH but set so far back into the redwoods you feel like it’s your own private oasis. Not a sound at night or early morning. Perfectly maintained and amazing artwork and use of space. We hosted a dinner for 6 and indoor / outdoor seating was no problem. Will definitely stay again

Redwood retreat

My husband and I celebrated our 75th birthdays here. It was quite wonderful. Beautiful cabin and location stocked with everything we needed and more. For those with mobility issues, the path to the cabin might be a bit challenging.

Redwood Haven

We loved this amazing cabin nestled in redwoods. Waking up to the beautiful view and relaxing with a wood stove fire in the evenings after hiking and paddling the Big River. Hosts are great and very responsive. The bed was comfy and kitchen had everything we needed. Wonderful place to get away .

Magical stay

It was an amazing stay. Debbie was wonderful and it is such a great stay. Comfy bed; great kitchen. Nice touches all around including coffee and treats for the surrounding community. Can’t say enough good things.

I am an architect & artist- Big River Farm has been my art project for many years. I live in Comptche, 10 miles inland, but appreciate coming to the Farm to work in the garden and my art studio there, out of the fog. My art studio hides under the redwoods and I am currently creating a printmaking environment for monoprints & woodblock prints there. I also enjoy an occasional moment 'en plein aire' with my watercolors or acrylics as the orchard and redwood trees have always been my muses...
Being by the ocean is also inspiring. I love to kayak on the river and occasionally go rockfishing. I like to ride my bike on the Big River Haul Road. Walking on the beach or headlands is always refreshing & uplifting.

Big River Farm is a revitalized former Zen commune on site of an old goat farm and orchard. While the dwellings have been brought to the standard of modern-day comfort, to this day relics of the old Farm and the Zen commune are noticeable throughout in the buildings and meditative spaces.
The various cabins have been claimed and are occupied by renters. There are 4 cabins on the property. The Zendo, at the heart of the property, is continuing to welcome visitors and provide the rural country 'Getaway' experience.

O que faz essa propriedade ser única?

The Zendo is unique for its seclusion amongst the Redwoods and cherry trees, and yet has beautiful views of the forest understory out of its multitude of windows. Recent renovations to the kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom have created a feel of vacation comfort while still maintaining the rustic air of this country home. Bring sturdy shoes as there is a short walk downhill to the Zendo. And not to forget- the woodstove. To Mendocino locals like ourselves, there's nothing like kicking back in front of our home fireplace to make a good end to another day in paradise..
