Located 15 minutes outside Monticello on Lake Shafer, this fabulous, historic country cottage offers a cozy retreat for guests. It was once a dwelling for Sally Rand, a famous burlesque dancer, and her entourage during the 1933-34 Chicago Worlds Fair! The 'Eagles' Nest' cottage offers a complimentary coffee bar. With sleeping areas featuring a queen bed and a twin day bed, plus a living room with a sofa bed, there’s plenty of space to relax. The newly updated bathroom includes a walk-in shower with complimentary toiletries . Guests stay comfortable thanks to heating and air conditioning. Whether you’re unwinding after a day of exploring Indiana Beach, taking in a kayak trip up river (available to rent), fishing off the sandy river's edge for walleye or bass, or enjoying quiet moments around a beach campfire, this marvelous property provides a fantastic home away from home. This cottage property has plenty of room to park 2 trucks with fishing boats too! We hope you enjoy what our place, Lake Shafer, and all that Monticello has to offer.

The stay at the cabin was nothing short of glorious! Karyl was so responsive, friendly, and accommodating of me as an 86 year old woman needing a bit more support than some. Karyl always responded to my questions with urgency, and the cottage was immaculate, comfortable, and well furnished. A perfect get away to spend time with my son. I strongly recommend staying at Karyl's cottage.

Meeting the owner in person to Acces keys was a challenge for us with timing and traffic. We felt bad for arriving later than planned. When we arrived we found the master bedroom sheets had hair and particles on them. Even though we arrived late at night the owner came right over to fix the issue and replaced the sheets. The view, patio and sand beach are amazing! Steep set of stairs to get down to beach totally not a problem for us but be mindful if someone has mobility restrictions. Additionally the ability to rent kayaks was very nice and convenient. If you are a beginner kayaker probably not the best. To enter the water you go down a ladder into the water where there is a small standing pad to load into the kayak. As a shorter person and high water levels I was not high enough above the kayak to get stability to load therefore had to get creative and hung off the ladder. The mornings were super quiet and peaceful, calm water not a lot of river traffic. Great for kayaking. Afternoon river turned into a party vibe, lots of music. There was a house down river that played music into the evening till about midnight but we did not mind the style was good and a variety. Having a fire on the sand beach was an excellent way to enjoy the sunset evening stars. There were a few spiders/bugs, we chopped it up to being an older cottage hard to seal to keep them out. Great dog friendly, our dog enjoyed the long weekend. She is trained to kayak with us and wears a life vest.

This home is a gem I would say, unfortunately my experience was not, with the host in particular. The place was quite dirty with unclean floors, bathroom, sheets and unclean dishes. My cat found a random summer sausage on the floor and got sick. My showers were mostly cold. I found multiple roaches daily, and when I found 6 in one night I finally decided to leave. Unfortunately I did not have proof of my complaints, therefore the host turned it around and told me my issues were false. I blew a fuse in the bathroom, which she had to hire an electrician, but told me I should have asked to plug in my device. Host was refusing refund until I complained, therefore she gave me a very small percentage back. I am honestly shocked at how unprofessional and rude this host was with everything that had happened. She was very pleasant to begin with until I decided to leave. If I can give any advice, do not contact host through phone, have proof if there are any issues, and ask to use outlets.

Responding to this guest, I feel her fabricated complaints were an attempt to be refunded for a stay that she had changed her mind on for personal reasons. Her requests were dealt with promptly as they arose. This cottage is truly a gem as she mentioned.

I enjoy hosting my cottage because it allows me to share my joy of the area with others and meet new people.

The Eagles Nest sits just outside a little town called Buffalo. Situated on a quiet country lot gives guests quiet mornings and evenings. Fishing and boating are popular pastimes as is dining in Monticello. Free live music is always available and a day or two spent at Indiana Beach is a must. Boat tours on Lake Shafer or Lake Freeman top off the perfect vacation.

The Eagles Nest is unique to the area because of its history of being in the 1933-34 Chicago Worlds Fair as a dressing room for Sally Rand. It’s location sits high off the water but is only 30 easy steps to the water with the rivers depth being between 4-5 feet it is perfect for swimming and kayaking . Its country lot offers privacy along with quiet mornings and calm evenings attracting fisherman, swans, geese and an occasional bald eagle.
