Prairieside Cottage: Charming Private Property Nestled In The Flint Hills

Prairieside Cottage is an idyllic family-friendly retreat nestled in the heart of the Flint Hills of Kansas. It is located in the tiny and energetic creative community of Matfield Green. The property is adjacent to town and privately situated with 8 acres of beautiful tallgrass prairie beside the cottage. Stargazers will delight in the rural location of Prairieside Cottage which has spectacular night skies within a truly dark site for astronomical observation.

Nature lovers, artists and vacationers looking for a peaceful and relaxing getaway will enjoy Prairieside Cottage. The main house features a full kitchen, dining room, living room, office space, bedroom and bathroom (with a deep soaking tub), as well as a custom loft space that is perfect for reading and dreaming.

The second bedroom is in a semi-private office that has a comfortable full-size futon. The office room is separated from the main space with a curtain. The property also has a quaint one-room studio building that can be used as an artist’s or writer’s studio.

Families and children are welcome. Nature walks are possible on the property, which hosts abundant wildlife and a variety of plants and grasses. Trains run close by, art galleries are just around the corner, the sky is a constantly beautiful canvas, and there are many local attractions and historical sites to explore in the area.

The cottage is newly remodeled and welcomed the first guests in May 2014.

Peaceful getaway on the prairie

My spouse and I spent a couple days in the peace and quiet of the Flint Hills. There is so much to do between matfield green and council grove, especially if you enjoy hiking in the prairie. If recommend the short 20 minute drive to the Tall Grass National Preserve.The only thing I'd say could be improved is the shower head in the bathtub.

Well supplied cottage on the plains of Kansas. Close to Tall Grass Prarie preserve...be sure and bring food that you need as you won't find other than basic groceries near by. If you're over 55, you get a discount on booze!

Peace and relaxation on the Prairie

This cottage is so well designed, so comfortable, and it is, quite literally a work of art, as you see as you open the door. The hosts have thought of every need for a wonderful stay. Highly recommended! It has an extensive library. The kitchen is well stocked with essentials and more. The bath has a huge vintage soaker tub for deep comfort with shower. The views of the prairie are calming and beautiful. We have two restaurants that we always visit, the Grand Central Hotel in Cottonwood Falls, for Dinner, and the superb Ad Astra Cafe in Strong City (Only Open Friday-Sunday), for lunch. We can't imagine a nicer place to stay. We will definitely be back.

A winter weekend in the Prairieside Cottage

This place has a lot of character and looks exactly as depicted. Located in the small community of Matfield Green, the cottage feels isolated as it is blocked by trees near the front entrance and a field behind. The interior is well-done and clean. I stayed for a long weekend in January when the temperatures dipped to the single digits: this cottage remained toasty warm. Bring provisions: the closest grocery store is about 20 minutes away. Eggs in the refrigerator were a nice touch - there is a chicken coop located on the property (abandoned for the winter?), and I'm not sure if those eggs were local or not. This property was a great stay, and I'll be sure to book again in the spring or early summer.

Amazing Peace

What a great time! The cottage was immaculate and had everything you need to be comfortable. Immediately behind the cottage is 20+ acres of tallgrass prairie which is amazing. Matfield Green, the town, was quiet except for the train that rumbles through hourly, but it is a good half-mile away and not bothersome at all. Peace and quiet, and relaxation is abundant. Cottonwood Falls is a short drive north with alot to see and do. Chase County State Fishing Lake, just west of Cottonwood falls was astounding if you want to hike and see great waterfalls.

We had a really nice stay. It was mostly quiet, except for the trains. We were disappointed to find that the near by restaurant was permanently closed. The shower was awkward and difficult to use with no good place to put stuff, but otherwise it was great and a very relaxing long weekend.

A fine spot to explore the Flint Hills

The property was perfect for our needs and and private. Open fields to the east (perfect to watch the sun rise over breakfast) and a Kansas juniper wall to the west to block off neighbors. Very nicely appointed in the kitchen for preparing meals (and you might plan on it since the entire area is very rural. A few nice places in Strong City, Cottonwood Falls and Council Grove, however. One thing to note: there are a lot of freight trains passing by about a quarter mile away. You can hear them though the sound in the house is quite muffled AND since there are no crossings, there are no horns etc. We can hear trainssix miles away in KC and blowing their horns at every crossing, so . . . we did not consider it a problem.
