Perched on a high bluff over the Copper River, with an Awesome Mountain View

You'll get the whole house, 3 acres of privacy, an amazing view, rustic seats on the bluff and all the amenities you need. The house was custom built by us in 2000 and has a VERY OPEN floor plan. What we mean by a very open floor plan is there are NO doors upstairs. The master bedroom faces the mountains and the stunning view! It is separated by open hallway and a curtain. So please only consider booking our house if you are very comfortable with the folks you are traveling with! The second bedroom is located in a quiet section of a large room above the garage that also serves as the living room...again NO doors it is all one room. That space can also support a queen size air mattress. Again, we offer the perfect space for a family or group of very close friends.

There is a couch and loveseat upstairs and the decor is totally Alaskan. Downstairs is another loveseat, a full kitchen with a table right in front of a giant window looking out at the mountains. There is a full bathroom downstairs off of the kitchen- yes it has a door.

You will be off the beaten path, but within striking distance of much of the greatness Alaska has to offer! The road to the house is a dirt road. The driveway and outer portion of the house is dirt/gravel as well. Please be aware that the area can be muddy if there has been a lot of rain. That includes the driveway and area around the house.

Important to note about our house; it is a custom log house with some leveling challenges. During the spring-summer the permafrost changes, the ground sinks and floors become unlevel. We work hard each season remediate shifting; but would like to be open and clear that you be aware that floors may be unlevel during your stay, which also effects some of the ground floor doors, they still work, just not flawlessly.

At the house you will have tv, wi-fi, and a telephone for local calls. There are cell phone towers near-by that support GCI and AT&T service. Other mobile providers may not provide adequate service in the area.

Amazing Views in a Comfy Cabin!

My wife and I spent 2 nights here while we explored Wrangell-St. Elias NP. We were awestruck by the incredible views of the Copper River and Mt Drum from the edge of the bluff. The cabin was well stocked with needed supplies, clean, and very cozy.If we ever find ourselves back in Alaska, this is at the top of the list of places to stay!!

Beautiful cabin with even more beautiful views of the Copper River. Hosts were great about communicating information for location and how to get in. Clean and basic. Nothing over the top inside but everything was provided and it was very clean. Kitchen was stocked with minimal pots/pans but lots of plates/cups/silverware. Outdoor grill was nice to have. Comfy bed, quiet peaceful location. There are some quirks that owners were aware of because of the settling and freeze/thaw cycle.

Beautiful location, comfortable log cabin setting overlooking the river. This is not a 4 seasons, but if you are ok with ruffing it a bit its great.

Lovely cabin with a great view

Very nice, modern, clean, comfortable cabin with large windows facing a stunning view of the mountains. Full kitchen and washer and dryer. We enjoyed the fire pit overlooking the river. The location was private in a beautiful setting. We would definitely rent again. Highly recommended.

Wonderful Stay in Gakona

My dad and I spent a couple nights here and it was excellent! The house was clean and easy to find, and Sandy was a great host with excellent communication. The location is private, and that view of Mount Drum is simply spectacular! Do note that if you come in the summer, there are quite a few mosquitos who will try to enter the house or get into your car, so be leery of that. But that's Alaska! If you are looking for a reliable, safe, and comfortable stay in some of the most beautiful mountain country in the world, I would highly recommend this cabin!

We came to Gakona to participate in an event for the copper river watershed coalition. Our family had a great time! The house had everything we needed and the beds were very comfortable!

Great stay in Gakona

We had a great stay here using it as a home base for visiting Wrangell St. Elias National Park. Great house with great views. The process and communication was great. The only downside was that there were tons of mosquitos while we were there so we couldnā€™t do as much outside, but the house was great

Exceeded Expectations!!

What a little gem. The views were magical and cabin was cozy and comfortable. Only regret... we didnt bring binocular to get a closer look at the moose on Copper River. Yes, there was moose down from the bluff!! Big shout out to Gakona Lodge for filling our bellies with quality food and exceptional hospitality. All around experience 11 out of 10.

Forty years celebration

We will be married 40 years in September. This stop was part of our trip. The hosts were married on the bluff 25 years ago. I was re-proposed to on the bluff. Of course I said yes! I will highly recommend this place to others. It was beautiful. Remember future summer guest, summers in Alaska come with mosquitoes!!

Gakona Beautiful Views

Great place to stay. Beautiful cabin and grounds. Fantastic views of the mountains across the river. Remote location. There is a small brewery very nearby. Drove to go hiking in the National Park. Would definitely recommend this property for a stay.

This cabin is more like a house. Very comfortable, nicely stocked kitchen, washer and dryer! What more could you ask for? Beautiful location with animals in the area and a stunning northern light display on our last morning. Perfect! We were even welcomed by a sweet friendly cat. ā˜ŗļø

Unsafe but beautiful

The view is amazing, the owner is responsive and the property is well located. This is the end of the positives. The foundation is sinking to the point there are significant warps to the building. I measured the floor angle and found a 1-3% angle depending on where you were in the house. That means a drop of roughly four inches over 20 feet when a safe house has only a 1/2 inch variation over the same distance. This was not put in the listing despite the property owner knowing about it. Upstairs wobbles and feels unsafe. The slant of the floors results in visible gaps where the floor meets the walls. Mice in the walls were loud at night and were located in the wall by the main bedroomā€™s headboard. A local cat is aware and frequently tries to get into the house to hunt. We saw her successfully get a mouse in the garage. No battery for the smoke detector. I would not recommend the house until the foundation is fixed. If these issues were fixed, or at least disclosed, I would feel more comfortable recommending this property.

Amazing view!

The view of Mt. Drum and the Wrangell St. Elias range was amazing. We were extremely lucky to have beautiful weather almost every day. The house was clean and well organized. We loved the quiet and solitude. It was close to Copper Center where we went salmon fishing with Salmon Grove. Unfortunately, the mosquitos were in full force this year which affected our ability to be outside. Saw a large wolf one morning run through our yard. We also saw a coyote and many bald eagles. Great stay!

My husband and I met in South America, I moved to Alaska in 1994 and our adventures have continued to this day. We built this place while living in a tent on the property in 1999. We got married (on the property) during the summer of construction and lived here for 4 years. We moved across the state for work in an even more remote place, but our hearts still live here! We maintain close relationships with the great folks in Gakona! We have never rented this to tourists before last summer, but as travelers and adventurers ourselves, we know this is an outstanding place to base your Alaskan adventures from! The Wrangell St. Elias National park, the Nabesna Road, McCarthy, and Valdez are all destinations you can reach while staying at our place. Salmon fishing is within two miles!
