The Roost - Askrigg 18th Century Cottage

Nestling in the heart of the popular pretty village of Askrigg (or more famously 'Darrowby' for those that remember the original All Creatures Great & Small), situated on a quiet side road overlooking St Oswald’s Church, our delightful town cottage, dating back to the 1750s, is packed with charm, character, sleeps 4 and has everything you could need for your Yorkshire Dales holiday. After a day exploring the Dales there really is nowhere better to come home to roost. With a wonderful village Deli, handy village shop and 3 great pubs all within a couple of minutes' walk, this really is a great escape from it all.

Our gorgeous cottage sleeps up to 4 people and comprises the following:-

Entrance porch: with hanging space for coats.

Lounge/dining room: Packed with character, boasting original beamed ceiling and beams from ceiling to floor, original stone shelves and cupboards, wood burning stove, plenty of hanging space for coats, hats, boots and wellies, Smart TV with Freeview Play, DVD player, sound bar with sub woofer and blue tooth speaker, comfy sofas and dining table.

Kitchen: our fully equipped kitchen has an electric oven and ceramic hob, microwave, dishwasher and fridge with icebox.

First floor:-

Bedroom 1: With double bed, hairdryer and Bluetooth wireless playback alarm clock radio with dual USB charging points. View to the front towards the Churchyard.

Bedroom 2: With twin beds, hairdryer and Bluetooth wireless playback alarm clock radio with dual USB charging points. View to the front towards the Churchyard.

Bathroom: with bath, separate shower cubicle with new Mira shower boasting adjustable flow, W.C. and wash hand basin.

Bed linen and towels are provided and included in our prices.

Please note that due to the age and character of our cottage, the ceilings are low.

Outside

To the rear of the property is a shared yard area. To the front there is a bench (ideal for those who like to people watch or talk to locals and holiday makers on their way to the waterfalls). NB There is no outside space at The Roost, we are a town cottage in the centre of Askrigg and we have no garden.

As with most properties in Askrigg, there is no designated parking at The Roost. Free parking is available throughout the village on a first come first serve basis.

We regret we are unable to accept pets.

Short breaks are available during off peak times.

What a find!

We spent a week in this cottage. It was everything we could have hoped for- and more. It was comfy, warm, and perfectly placed. We will be back for another stay next time we visit the UK.

The Roost, Happy time there

Lovely comfortable cottage especially the bedrooms. Really liked the welcome basket of food, thank you . So many cooking utensils, in fact so easy to cook. We even used the picnic things and cooler bag. The white bathroom towels were so nice to use. I will come again. Thank you so much, all very cosy and I did smile at listening to the kitchen clock 🦉🦉🦉

Cosy cottage in a fantastic location

Great little cottage it was the perfect size for the two of us to see in the New Year. Spotlessly clean, lovely log burner, kitchen with all the things you need, just a short walk to the village pubs, shop and fabulous deli. The bed was really comfortable, fabulous quality bedding and the shower in the bathroom was amazing. This cosy cottage is positioned perfectly for short walks and longer hikes and everyone you meet is really friendly. No issues with finding somewhere to park our car on a very busy period in the village as everyone was courteous and considerate and we were lucky enough to be outside the cottage a few times. If you’re thinking of a break in Askrigg we would really recommend The Roost.

A cozy, quiet retreat

The Roost is a very comfortable and well-situated base for a visit to Wensleydale. Being a little off the beaten track gives the Roost and Askrigg an authentic village feel and yet there are many walks right on the doorstep and other centres are easily accessible using the Little White Bus service. Everything in the Roost is of very high quality and thoughtful instructions make it easy to acquaint yourself with the amenities and area. Please do try to patronise the local shops (including the craft co-op Heather &Grouse) and pubs (check hours and make reservations) - you won’t be disappointed and their survival is important to maintain the authentic character of Askrigg village. I loved my time there and was sorry to leave. Thank you Ruth and Stu! PS One word of caution: someone who is very tall will need to keep their wits about them at The Roost.

Home from home

Our second time in this lovely cottage, very well equipped and a great shower! Comfortable beds, clear and good communication with the owners. We loved it!

A lovely little cottage, with everything you'd need for a great stay.

A cosy, clean, welcoming cottage in the heart of Askrigg. All the bits and pieces you'd need for a stay. With great heating, and a lovely shower (it was pretty cold and wet when we were there - these things seemed important).

Excellent. Happy. Know the area anyway.

Happy and comfortable. Good location. Kings Head is a good pub meal near by. Best avoid the White Rose. Good walks around and close to Hawes if needed. The Little White Bus sservice was handy.

Askrigg

This is a dear little cottage. Cosy and comfortable and well equipped. We were a party of 3 adults. 4 adults may be a bit of a squeeze sitting round the table for example.

Excellent!

What a lovely little cottage, it was perfect for us and Askrigg was great. The property was super clean and had everything we needed. The folder of print out of the local walks was a great touch and appreciated by us. The only improvement would have been to received a welcome pack with some basics like tea, coffee, milk and maybe a few breakfast provisions, it's quite unusual for this not to be provided but luckily we arrived before the village shop closed so it was not a problem. We would return if we wished to stay in Askrigg again and highly recommend The Roost!

Thank you for your lovely review. We're really pleased you had a good holiday and enjoyed the cottage and the village (and also the walks folder which is a new addition!). We did provide welcome packs pre-Covid but unfortunately for everyone had to stop; our housekeeping team used to visit the village shop and get the provisions each changeover but, as they manage multiple cottages, this was stopped to lessen the risk with them going in and out of various shops each changeover day. However, after reading your comments in the guest book at the cottage we re-visited this situation and are pleased to say that a week later welcome packs were safely reinstated at The Roost. We’re always looking for ways to make sure our guests have a great holiday, so we’re very grateful for your feedback.

A comfortable Coup

An adorable and comfortable cottage. Well appointed, looked after and in prime position for Wensleydale, Wharfedale and Sunday morning bell-ringing from the church opposite.

Blissful time in Yorkshire!

The Roost was a fantastic base for our short stay in Askrigg; a real ‘home from home’. The cottage was clean, cosy, quirky and well equipped for self-catering. Would love to go back again!

Perfect, cosy cottage

Extremely well-appointed cottage in a beautiful village in stunning Wensleydale. We felt spoilt by the luxurious bedrooms and loved cosy evenings by the fire. Children’s play park just over the road and down an alley was perfect for our 2 children aged 7 and 9. So much to do in area. We hope to return!

Delightful, very homely feel

Well looked after. Delightful little 2 bedroom cottage. Everything you need. People are very friendly. Really enjoyed the surrounding areas. It's a must see place. Walking boots are a must. Ruth & Stuart lovely hosts couldn't do enough to make you feel welcome. Thank you x

Lovely cottage

Had a great time here for just 3 nights and explored the local area and pubs. Property has everything you want. Great beds and bedding, very warm and cosy. And Netflix was a handy addition. WiFi very good too. Would definitely recommend.

Wonderful!

We were three friends travelling together and found the Roost to be perfect for us. Spotlessly clean and well equipped it immediately felt like home after our easy check in. Wifi was excellent and parking never a problem. And the beds were VERY comfortable! A very enjoyable stay.

Sehr schön, idyllisch, liebevoll eingerichtet, sauber.

Das Cottage ist wunderschön. Alles sehr liebevoll eingerichtet und sehr sauber und ordentlich. Richtig zum wohlfühlen. Von der Küche bis zum Bad war alles vorhanden was man brauchte, sogar Informationen und Wanderkarten für die Umgebung. Einziger Nachteil: die Deckenhöhe; das Cottage ist sehr niedrig und große Menschen (ab ca. 185 cm) müssen ständig den Kopf einziehen (Türrahmen und Deckenbalken).

Lovely homely cottage

Cottage was spotlessly clean with everything we needed for our stay. Great location with lovely walks without needing to get into the car but also great for exploring further afield. Good also that it's within walking distance of couple of good eating places and great tearoom. We had problem with hot water one day rang Ruth owner who rectified it straight away. Lovely welcome pack on arrival. Would definately book again if we return to this area.

Married since 2001 we were lucky enough to become custodians of this wonderful cottage in October 2016. Having been visiting the area for a long time, with family owning properties in the nearby village of Redmire, buying The Roost just felt right. Stuart is an ex-soldier, now working in software, and Ruth runs her own virtual business, so with both working in the world of technology it became increasingly important to escape the hectic pace of working life and just sit back from time to time, to re-charge and re-discover what it's all about. There are few places better to do that than the Yorkshire Dales and the opportunity of having our own little part of that was a dream come true. We have tried to make The Roost as comfortable as possible and want our guests to be able to unwind and recharge the same as us - we all deserve great holidays!

Completely refurbished in 2017 and with the installation of central heating our wonderful cottage boasts a wealth of original features combined with all the modern comforts of home so you really do have the best of both worlds. Set in the heart of peaceful Askrigg surrounded by the Yorkshire Dales National Park its the ideal base for exploring, or just for relaxing and taking time out.

There are very few straight edges in our wonderful 18th Century Cottage, with over 2 ft thick walls and exposed beams throughout, The Roost is everything you would expect a cottage from 1750 to be with the added bonus of all the comforts and luxuries of home. You really feel like you are staying in a piece of history which is much loved and cared for and will be for years to come.
