Belgium, a country in Western Europe, is known for medieval towns, Renaissance architecture and as headquarters of the European Union and NATO. The country has distinctive regions including Dutch-speaking Flanders to the north, French-speaking Wallonia to the south and a German-speaking community to the east. The bilingual capital, Brussels, has ornate guild halls at Grand Place and elegant Art Nouveau buildings.

Berchem is a southern district of the municipality and city of Antwerp in the Flemish Region of Belgium. Berchem is located along the old Grote Steenweg (Dutch for 'Big Paved Road') that has connected Brussels to Antwerp for several centuries; the town borders the districts of Deurne, Borgerhout, Wilrijk and Antwerp and the municipality of Mortsel. Berchem itself consists of three quarters, Oud Berchem, Groenenhoek and Nieuw Kwartier.
The 'Ring', Antwerp's circular motorway which follows the track of the former city defense walls, cuts Berchem in two parts, separating the urban inner city area or Oud-Berchem (intra muros) from the more residential and suburban areas of Groenenhoek and Nieuw Kwartier (extra muros).

Antwerp (i / ˈæntwɜːrp /, Dutch: Antwerp [ˈɑntʋɛrpə (n)], French: Anvers [ɑ̃vɛʁ (s)]) is a city in Belgium, the capital of Antwerp province in the region of Flanders. With a population of 510.610, [2] it is the most populous city clean in Belgium. Its metropolitan area houses around 1,200,000 people, which is second behind Brussels. [3] [4]
Antwerp is on the River Scheldt, linked to the North Sea by the Westerschelde estuary. The Port of Antwerp is one of the biggest in the world, ranking second in Europe [5] [better source needed] and within the top 20 globally. [6]
Antwerp has long been an important city in the Low Countries, both economically and culturally, especially before the Spanish Fury (1576) in the Dutch Revolt. The inhabitants of Antwerp are nicknamed Sinjoren, after the Spanish honorific señor or French seigneur, "lord", referring to the Spanish noblemen who ruled the city in the 17th century. [7] The city hosted the 1920 Summer Olympics.

Points of interest [edit]
The Zurenborg area hosts a high concentration of Art Nouveau and other fin-de-siècle style townhouses, many built between 1894 and 1906. The main streets of interest are Cogels-Osylei, Transvaalstraat, and Waterloostraat. After the area was entitled for demolition in the 1960s to be replaced with a business and office complex, demolition could be prevented while the area got monumental status in the 1980s. In recent years, the area became an attraction for architecture-minded visitors.
The Driekoningenstraat - Statiestraat is the main shopping and commercial area of Berchem. Though-suffering competition from suburban shopping centers, the retail high street still has an interesting mix or Belgian, local, and international convenience and non-food stores. The high street has recently been refurbished, giving more space to pedestrians.

Transport [edit]
The railway station of Antwerp-Berchem, located within the district, is the second largest station in the city of Antwerp. With a few exceptions, such as the Thalys high-speed train, almost all trains stopping in Antwerp have a stop at Antwerp-Berchem station. [1] The district of Berchem is also served by the Antwerp tram routes 4,7,9,11 and 15, and numerous bus lines, which connect Berchem with the bordering districts and communities, and are operated by the Flemish transport company De Lijn. [2]
As of 2016 the Taiwanese airline EVA Air provides shuttle bus services to and from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol from Berchem, (near Antwerp-Berchem bus station); that way Belgium-based customers may use its flights to and from Amsterdam. The service is co-operated with Reizen Lauwers NV. [3]
Antwerp-Berchem is a railway station in the south of the city of Antwerp, Antwerp, Belgium. The station opened on 3 May 1836 on railway lines 25, 27, 27A and 59.
From opening until 1975, the station was simply known as Berchem, later changing to Berchem (Antwerp), at a time that international trains stopped here instead of Antwerp East. In 1983, when Berchem and Antwerp became one city, the station was renamed Antwerp-Berchem.
International Thalys and Benelux services (from Amsterdam to Brussels and Paris) stopped calling at this station, following the opening of the North-South tunnel under Antwerp-Central. Since December 2014, the Benelux service (Amsterdam - Brussels) calls at the station again.
