Good morning, Colin, Thank you for taking the time to leave your review. First of all, I’d like to clarify that Rome’s tourist taxes are not hidden-they’re listed in the VRBO listing. And since people often don’t read everything, we include the information about tourist taxes again in our first welcome message. All accommodations, regardless of type, are required by law to collect these taxes and then remit them to the City of Rome. We collect them at check-in because that’s when we meet in person! As for air conditioning, in Rome’s historic center it is very rare-if not nearly impossible-to have a centralized system like the ones used in the United States. The buildings date back to the 15th and 16th centuries and are subject to strict urban planning regulations enforced by the Ministry of Fine Arts. It is generally prohibited to install outdoor units or drill holes in the exterior walls of the building; therefore, priority is given to the bedrooms and the living room, where people spend the most time. Dear Ashleen, thank you for your review! We are sad to know that you found that the AC in the house was not sufficient. Unfortuntately In Italy there is no centralized AC, especially in old buildings like the one where our flat is. Our AC units are new, we clean the filters frequently and we are very throrough with the maintenance of the units to ensure a good performance. Do keep in mind that with the strong heatwave we are going thru it is very difficult for the house to maintain a lower temperature. As Flavia explained during the check-in, since the house is exposed to the sun on two sides, it is helpful to leave the shutters and blinds closed during the day in order to prevent the heat from the sun from entering the house, that way the house can maintain a cooler temperature. We apologize for this inconvenient but we are happy that you made the best of your stay in Rome, that you had a lovely dinner at Osteria dell’Anima and that you were able to see the Pope!
