Villa Chrisafo,Ikaria-KamposA traditional mansion,beginning of the 19th century

A traditional mansion dating since the beginning of the 19th century of 150 square meters,fully renovated,consisting of 3 bedrooms,sitting room with a kitchen and 2 bathrooms.Situated at the northern part of Ikaria island at Kampos village -ancient Oinoi-5 km far from Evdilos port,300 meters far from Kampos beach and 500 meters far from the village’s center.The mansion is situated in a green orchard of 2 ankres,full of olive trees,orange tangerine and lemon trees plus a variety of other fruit trees.Seasonal sweet smelling plants,traditional kitchen garden with no chemical addits and a vineyard compose also the surroundings of the orchard.Small paved lanes leading to fresh corners of tranquility and concentration.The location of the building offers a splendid view to both sea and mountain beautiful sunrises to those waking up early and the quest can enjoy moments of inner calmness and contact with the nature.
This 19th century mansion consists of a typical example of traditional Icarian popular architecture.Built of stone with 60cm width walls,the west part of the house is founded on a huge natural rock in the depression of the land and it is developed in two levels,with a wooden roof covered by Icarian schist.
On the ground floor reigns the kitchen with the traditional store,formerly used for everyday cooking and heating,the necessary stone hand mill for grinding the wheat.On the right of the kitchen was situated the “furnace “consisting of the stone oven,the wine-press,the earthenware jar(vitines) of the wines which were built in a stone bench (pithostasi).On the left side of the kitchen was a “cellar”,necessary space for reserving and preserving the whole years supplies in jars (wine,olive oil).In cupboards or trunks and next to that the basement “katoyi” used for storaging tools for agriculture and household equipment.
Over the “katoyi “ and “cellar” was situaded “Pyrgos”(anoyi),the living room,the official guest ‘salon ‘ always clean and tidy for the guests hospitality.Next to it another assisting guest room the “Pyrgari”.
Pyrgos and Pyrgari had no immediate contact with the low levels and were only communicating exteriorly with a stone staircase that consisted the basic architectural element of the house.The lavatory was outdoors within a small distance o the main house,which is reserved but renovated as a secondary lavatory of the house.
This traditional house is inherited by a fourth generation owner who with labour sensitivity and a lot of personal effort and presence renovated the place absolutely respecting his inheritance since he reserved all structural and functional elements of the house-but also willing to create meanwhile a functional and contemporary place that satisfy today’s needs and comfort of its guests.
Therefore he transformed the “Katoyi “to a wonderful bedroom with a view to the orchard and the sweet smelling plants of the garden.The “cellar “was transformed to a kitchen and the old kitchen became an exquisite sitting room reserving all its traditional functional elements.The communication with the reserved “furnace “ space remains even today absolutely functional.Pyrgos and Pyrgari we’re renovated remaining although cozy hospitality spaces viewing a spacious Veranda to the mountain,to the mountain,to the orchard and the beach.
The mansion includes air conditioning,3 TV sets and a fully equipped kitchen plus a washing machine among other facilities.
In the yard there are the necessary facilities assuring a relaxing and comfortable staying for families groups of friends and couples.
The building is situated within a distance of 50m far from the center of Kampos village.There are preserved Remaining of the ancient city Oinoi ,which flourished in 5th and 4th century B.C.
Scattered pillars and architectural parts of the Ancient Temple of Dionysos or the Ancient Gym and the well preserved building of the Romain Conservatory can be seen ,while at the Archeological Museum are exposed findings from the regional excavations.
Next to the Museum there is the Byzantine Temple of Agia Eirini,dating from the 10th Century.
At the village’s Square there are taverns,coffee shops and a Pharmacy.
Distance there is a fully equipped “Sklavenitis” super market.
In the village there are two beaches:the big,organized Kampos beach equipped with umbrellas and deck chairs and Partheni beach in a beautiful small bay with a fish tavern.Both beaches are within 10 minutes walk from the house.
Evdilos port is 5 kms far from the house .Evdilos is a pictours amphitheatrical small town including taverns,coffee shops,traditional bars,car rentals,travel agencies and a Medical Center.
Within a distance of 7 kms from the house there are two tourist villages,Yaliskari and Armenistis with the renowned beaches Mesakti and Livadi.We can find there Surf Schools and a variety of bars ,taverns and tourist shops.
Interesting tourist attractions are met at the green mountain villages of Pigi,Marathos and Fradato within a distance of 7 kms.
In the south part of the island there is Agios Kyrikos port and the local airport within a distance of 40 kms.
It is more than interesting for the visitors of Ikaria to join its famous fairs,to drink local wine,to taste traditional food and to dance with the local crowd,all as one under the melodies of the Icarian dance.
Maybe something is combined with one of the secrets of longevity of the Icarians.

•Smoking allowed only outdoors. When smoking , please dispose your cigarettes in ashtrays, as to avoid fire incidents
• Please ALWAYS keen the window screens down.
•Do not dispose garbage into the toilet vase. It can cause serious plumbing problems.
• Please do not take the bath towels to the beach. We provide you with separate ones for the beach.
