Umatah Retreat Chalet: Luxury bush retreat with water & city views

Umatah means "you matter". Umatah to us, Umatah to yourself, Umatah to those around you and Umatah to the environment. Umatah is part of the original State Brick Works that was closed down in the 1940’s after their excavations hit an underground spring. The property runs on organic principles and has a mango orchard, apiary, vegetable wicking beds plus various other fruit and nut trees. There is a large waterhole, landscaped gardens and endless native bushland.

The Space:
Umatah Retreat Chalet was designed to nurture wellness and stimulate your senses to encourage relaxation. The chalet is disability friendly with wide doorways and ramped access**. It is surrounded by native bushland and overlooks the tranquil waters of the historic quarry, with city views as the backdrop.

Umatah Retreat Chalet has an open plan living space with full kitchen, two bedrooms, large bathroom and outdoor alfresco area. The bedrooms consists of one master suite with king bed and a second bedroom which can be configured with either two long singles or one king bed.

The outside area is fenced from the main property to keep our friendly dogs, ponies and alpacas off your deck.

Guest Access:
In addition to Umatah Retreat Chalet, guests will have access to the 'green', waterhole and surrounding bushland areas.

**Please note that the chalet is positioned up a steep driveway with parking available next to the chalet. If you would like to explore the property beyond this area, terrain is difficult and may preclude some users from access. Judy and Heath have a very special place, perched on the quarry lake edge there in Byford. So close to the city, yet so peacefully removed from the hustle and bustle. The attention to detail around every moment of our experience was outstanding. Every time we were wanting for something, we would find that we had been pre-empted and a (lovely) solution had been provided for us. Friendly folk, faultless, and fabulousWe highly recommend and will be returning.

My husband and I came to Umatah to have a much needed "charge the battery" weekend and we got so much more from staying here. Jade and Heath have gone beyond creating a space full of joy. The moment I walked in to the sound of relaxing music playing, the delicious fire was prepared, our bedroom was stunning and when I walked into the bathroom which had everything you could need every bit of stress just melted away. Jade has left no stone unturned and you can feel that the warmth of her soul was in every detail. From the fresh eggs and milk to the ice ready for a wine. The kitchenware is amazing. I felt like someone just gave me the biggest, warmest hug and it was a reminder to myself how much I matter. We have done quite a bit of travelling around Australia and overseas however the location and the state of cleanliness was 6 stars. The view, the animals and tranquility will not be forgotten. Thank you Heath and thank you Jade for sharing your beautiful property and building a chalet for others to enjoy a piece of paradise. Karen and Nils (Lancelin WA)

Stylish and Close Weekend Escape

This property is gorgeous inside and out. Everything has been styled so well, including every necessary item. The view and outdoor area during the day is tranquil and relaxing while at night the city skyline twinkles beautifully as the fireplace crackles to life. A perfect weekend getaway with friends to drink red wine, play board games, walk the Byford trail and finish off with a winery lunch. I would highly recommend a stay in this beautiful place with or without children (there really were cute ponies and alpacas right outside) and it was such a bonus that we could easily and quickly get there Friday after work.

A perfect retreat

We were lucky enough to have an extended stay at Umatah and would have stayed longer if we could. The location, views, design and cleanliness of the chalet, the little touches and the warm hospitality of Jade and Heath combined to make this a perfect stay for us. We were close enough to Perth, the sights and the beaches but happy and able to unwind and relax back at the chalet with evenings spent on the balcony particularly special. An absolute gem!

Peaceful perfection

Umatah is absolutely beautiful, the property is perfect in every way. Immaculately clean, comfortable and well appointed. We loved our stay here as a mini honeymoon. Jade is lovely and very easy to communicate with. Highly recommend and will hopefully be fortunate enough to come and stay again in the future. Thank you for having us!

A Sanctuary

What a gift this home was. Using it as a base for a 5 day yoga course each day coming, back to this carefully curated home was just so nourishing. So many thoughtful details to make it welcoming and warm. Beautiful to nestle in and watch the rain, perfect for sunny days to play on the lawn in the sunshine.

Perfect, relaxed stay

Our stay at Umatah Retreat was perfect. Our host was so lovely, and had thought of absolutely everything we could possibly need for our stay - plus more! There were so many little thoughtful touches that made us feel special, comfortable, relaxed, and cared for. The views and surrounds of the retreat are absolutely gorgeous, with views out to the city from the deck and living room window. Located close to Byford town centre, we had easy access to the shopping centres and restaurants. Thank you Jade, we had a lovely time and will be back again!

Quite simply, wonderful!

This was my second stay at Umatah, and it was every bit as fabulous as the first. The restorative effect of sitting on the deck taking in the view, listening to the birds sing and watching as the light changes as the hours pass cannot be overstated. We just loved it. The chalet has everything one could possibly need. It’s very comfortable and beautifully decorated, and the location is fantastic. We’ll be back again, no doubt about that! Thanks for everything, Jade, you are a wonderful host and person ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Relax in Style

Lovely family weekend away

Our family loved our stay at Umatah retreat. The house itself is beautifully designed with lots of thoughtful touches to make the stay more enjoyable. The house and surrounds had plenty to keep our small kids occupied, and they’re already asking when we can go back and have another holiday. We easily could have stretched our stay out longer. The position of the house gives spectacular views through to the city and we loved waking up to coffee and winding down over a wine looking out at the trees. We highly recommend Umatah to anyone considering it.

Umatah is a slice of heaven!

We feel like our cups have been refilled after a few days at Umatah! The photos don’t do it justice - it’s such a beautiful house in serene bush surroundings. All the quality finishes and decorative touches give such a sense of luxury, and the personal touches are simply wonderful. Fresh eggs, milk, juice and butter in the fridge, with coffee, tea, marshmallows, popcorn and more in the cupboard. And the books, games and beautiful view will keep you entertained for hours. Jade and Heath have thought of everything! Have already booked to return. Thanks so much to the fabulous hosts 😊

Splendour in Byford

Special is probably the best description of Umatah. We are not overly picky but we do like quality & interesting, but we are often disappointed when what you see in the pictures does not match up with reality. At Umatah the WOW factor is far better than the pictures. There has been no corners cut anywhere in this lovely place. We stayed for 6 days and everything that we even thought might assist our stay was right there ready for us to use. I would love a special rating for places like this so they were easy to identify and enjoy. I would use this as my weekender but a bit far from NSW for that sadly. Thanks very much to the hosts for doing this so well.

Prefect place to relax and unwind!

The photos do not do this place justice! From the immaculate inside and furnishings, to the breathtaking views outside, this was truly our favourite place. The playgrounds kept the kids entertained, aswell as the friendly ponies and alpacas. The attention to detail that Jade puts in to make your stay is amazing and is a true testament to the amount of love and hardwork at Umatah.

Great Hospitality on a perfect place

We came late in the evening directly from Germany and had no possibility to buy any food. Jade provided us with more than basic food to have a relaxed start. The Chalet is wonderful and perfect equiped with high quality.The view from the terrace with Perth skyline is fantastic. If Australia weren't so far away from Germany we would be permanent guests. We highly recommend this accommodation.

It’s a beautiful stay

Loving the experience. The details are thoughtfully set up. Jade and Heath are really friendly hosts who will make your stay wonderful. My teens said that THE type of vacation that they enjoy. Relax and do nothing or do the free activities at the ground or explore the nearby towns. Regretted not staying for a longer period. 😘 till the next time!!

Hidden Gem

This is one of those hidden gems that you find, and wish you knew about earlier. Being relatively close to Perth makes for easy access, yet the tranquillity of the property makes you feel as though you made the long drive down south. When you first arrive you are surrounded by native bush and orchards. The accommodation itself is better than the images on this site. The ceilings are really high and gives a feeling of being very spacious. Everything was well thought out and it was hard to not notice the fittings and fixtures that had a high-end luxurious feel. It was extremely clean and the host went above and beyond setting up our rooms and checked in with us that everything was okay when we arrived. Before arriving, the owner also checked if we would like a tepee set up for my 3-year-old daughter. When we arrived the tepee was set up in our room with age-appropriate toys and books. Needless to say, my daughter loved this as well as having her separate kid-sized dining table and chairs. Outside there were 2 different playgrounds, one was set up for younger children and another for older children, both were great and provided hours of play. Canoeing on the lake was nice and a great experience for my daughter. There are plenty of life jackets to choose from on the walk down, and several canoes and paddles that you can use at any time. We met some of the animals on the property, they were friendly yet also happy to let you be. I would highly recommend this stay.

Little gem tucked away, beautiful views, amazing decor

Beautiful modern 2 bedroom, one huge bathroom, city and bush views. Close to walking trails. On a property with other homes but no noise, not too close. Decor of home is just beautiful and Jade has thought of absolutely everything you possibly need for a self-catering weekend away. Great fire, plus outdoor fire pit, lots of outside seating on the deck. Room for yoga or relaxing. Stunning views. Huge bath. Comfy beds. Fresh eggs, bread, milk, oj, tea, coffee provided. Games, TV (use own streaming). Only negative is no wifi but that might be good for us! Need a guide on arrival with house details for applicances, walk locations, shops etc. Very much enjoyed our break away here. Thanks

Peaceful, relaxing sanctuary. Pure bliss

What a fabulous place to stay. Every detail was thought of from bread, eggs, milk, juice and biscuits, a polaroid camera to make memories and luxurious bathroom products. It was far enough away from the city to feel like a holiday but close enough so the travel wasn’t too long and arduous. The cottage was so beautifully renovated it felt like a 5 star retreat. It was so peaceful and quiet. I loved waking up to the sounds of nothing but birds and seeing the free range animals wander. The surrounding property was great to explore and my daughter loved the play area set amongst the bushland. It was a perfect get away for our family and I highly recommend it. We would come back in a flash.
