Welcome to 331 Descanso - Avalon Cottage
Budget-friendly Vacation Rental

This is a quaint three bedroom, 1 3/4 bath cottage located approximately three blocks from downtown and the beach. The three bedrooms are classic Catalina tandem bedrooms (queen, twins with trundles, queen MBR/full bath) with an open floor plan for the living space. This home will sleep a maximum of 8. You will find a new flat panel TV in the living area and a fully equipped kitchen with a pass through window/counter. No smoking, please. 331D

This vacation home rents on a nightly basis (2 night minimum, holidays and selected dates excepted; 3 night minimum mid-June through Labor Day).

Maximum Occupancy: 8 people / Bedroom 1: Queen Bed | Bedroom 2: 2 Twin Beds + 2 Trundles | Bedroom 3: Queen Bed

QUIET HOURS: 9:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. (use of outdoor areas strictly prohibited).

I would definitely stay here again already planning for next year. Everything was so clean family friendly location. They even have everything you might need. Their price is amazing. Communication was on point. The walk to the beach was not bad at all just make sure to take some comfortable shoes besides your sandals if you know you will be taking multiple trips back from the beach. 10/10 THANK YOU GUYS SO MUCH!

Weekend Trip

The overall layout of the property was interesting because you had to walk through each bedroom to get to the next. Not much privacy but it was no problem for our group. Good location and price!

Not worth the money and not like the pictures

I never give bad reviews unless it is bad. And this place warrants a bad review. You can tell this is probably a rental that the owners make enough money that they do not put any money back in. They was duct tape keeping some of the ceiling tiles in place. We had to put sheets on the couches because they look like they have never been cleaned. The bathroom and kitchen were so gross that we wore flip flops in the shower. We ended up buying plastic cups, plates and utensils because we were not going to use the ones in the kitchen. The internet was so bad, we did a speed test and it was 0.83 Mbps. Dial up is better than that. The fridge died while we were there. I sent a note on the VRBO app and didn't hear anything for an hour. So we found a phone number to the property management company and they were there in less than 30 min with a new fridge but it was too big for the kitchen so we got to enjoy a fridge in the living room for the rest of our stay. And if you are staying in the back room, the air conditioning does not work in that room so you need to use the box fans provided. We rent Catalina houses at least once or twice a year. This one is definitely off the list.

Dissatisfied with the condition of the house!

I have been renting through you for years but I don't think anyone has looked at this property in years. First of all the house is dirty - hair in shower , fridge is so gross on the outside. The window in my grandsons room was missing the bottom portion- it was just the screen. My other grandson cut his foot on a nail that sticking up out of the was threshold in the kitchen. The backdoor handle was loose and screws kept falling out so sometimes we couldn't open it. Window slat in backroom was broken , making it hard to open and close. The couches need a good clean. The house is really a mess! To be honest I went out and bought paper plates and cutlery because everything in the kitchen - Yuck! Toaster filthy and didn't work. I feel like I got robbed with the price I paid for this property. I also think the management property doesn't check on it either - I asked if there was fans and they said yes. It had air conditioning. I asked if it had a pack and play and they said no - so my daughter carted one and when we arrived she found one. I believe after this experience I will try to work with arbnb. Geraldine Walkup

Property was good, except the sofa sleeper was the worst. It made it hard for 8 people to sleep.

I really feel that if this rental is to be called a place for 8 the 4th bed needs to be decent. The golf cart was the best!

Charming cottage/great location

This property is all about the location. We were able to walk to and from the Catalina express ferry and downtown very easily. Very close to the vons as well. The layout of the house is kind of interesting in that you walk through each bedroom to get to the next. Probably most suitable for a family with kids more so than adults but all in all it served it’s purpose! Check-in was smooth, no issues.

July 2019 Stay

The floor plan for the unit is really bad. The people in the back bedroom have to go through two bedrooms to get to the front of the house. Not good if people are still sleeping. There’s no washer and dryer. The trundle beds in the middle bedroom are nice. The family room sitting area is nice. Overall the unit is not worth what they are charging.

Disappointed

I have been coming to Avalon for 30+ years and after staying multiple years in two other CIVR vacation rentals on Claressa which we LOVED, we were disappointed in this year's choice. Based on what we have paid in the past, the dollar-to-dollar value was much less. We knew the house would be smaller but there were other issues. Other than the back bedroom and bath, the house was very worn -- including small holes and stains on the upholstered furniture, ragged bedding, and a bathroom door that would not lock, slide, or shut tightly without a great deal of effort. Sprucing up the bathroom and kitchen flooring would not be a great expense and it felt to us that the house was just kept up to a minimum when a little extra effort would have made such a difference. It was very hot in Avalon the week we were there and we literally had to clean the fan out in the street in order to use it. It had not been cleaned in months or longer and the ceiling fans were also dusty. Other drawers and floors throughout were also not as clean as they should be. A smoke detector was missing and we had trouble with the front door lock as well. Stating the house sleeps 8 should make an extra clarification that 4 of the beds are in one room. The outside was nice enough and looked "quaint"in the neighborhood. The neighbors too, CIVR office staff, and clean towels were pros but not enough to offset the cons. We gave the review 2 stars for location. I hope some time is spent this winter in fixing up this house. It could be SO much nicer and serve new vacationers well.
