Om vÀrden
Palazzo Marigliano Àr vÀrd
During his years in exile, Pablo Neruda found himself in Capri in 1952 where he was a guest of Italian historian Edwin Cerio. His stay on the island was fictionalized in Antonio Skarmetaâs 1985 novel Ardiente Paciencia (later known Nerudaâs Postman), which inspired the popular film Il Postino. Upon his return to Naples, he printed for the first time his poignant work âLos Versos del Capitanâ at Palazzo Marigliano by the Arte Tipografica in July 1952. Only 44 samples were published and were unfortunately not for sale.
The history of the building
The courtyard remains to this day the center of the building: it once housed cellars, warehouses, a 15th century oven which remains intact and stables which hosted horses until the 1930s.
During the bombings of 1943, the building was hit by three bombs. The Palazzo was restored in the post-war period by Don Francesco Marigliano del Monte. It is thanks to him, with the help of publishers and bankers, that âIl Giornaleâ printed by Arte Tipografica and signed by Benedetto Croce (the liberal philosopher) was established in the Palazzo. Currently, some of the most prestigious and traditional Neapolitan artisans including the Antica Legatoria, the Doll Hospital, Tiziana DâAuria Presepi and Materia Mediterranea can be found within the Palazzoâs courtyard.
