  • Enjoyed our stay in quiet spacious farmhouse next to pretty tree-lined canal

"Our lovely hosts both spoke perfect English and immediately welcomed us with fresh slices of cake. We also appreciated the various food and drinks thoughtfully left out for us including jars of muesli, preserves, and even a proper English china tea pot! The property is very comfortable and full of character, with some interesting antique items placed around the rooms and a large wood burning stove in the sitting area, which we enjoyed lighting on the dark October nights, with plenty of wood provided. There is also perfectly adequate underfloor heating, and for an evening in, the TV set picks up BBC1, CNN, and National Geographic Channel - along with Dutch, French, and possibly German stations. We love history, so enjoyed exploring the vibrant medieval university town of Groningen about 30 mins drive away; but a highlight for us within a similar radius was a day at the Hunebed Centre - a UNESCO site of prehistoric burial chambers made of huge boulders - older than Stonehenge and of equal importance. We were moved by a visit to Kamp Westerbork (a Nazi transit camp) and refreshed by a trip up to the North Sea coast and the Lauwersmeer National Park (about 70 mins drive). Equally enjoyable was simply walking along the peaceful and beautiful canal that passes the bottom of the garden and which seems to stretch for miles - as far as the eye can see. We spotted a kingfisher; and the sight of the lines of golden-leaved trees reflected in the still water through the autumn morning mist was a photographer's paradise! We have already booked a return visit here next summer, and would recommend this property to anyone - especially those seeking a quieter rural location but with easy road access to nearby shops, supermarkets and tourist attractions. • Location and comfort!

"Its a full row home loft flat with a terrace and kitchen. The location is perfect directly between the city center and the medical center. Diet showed us around and gave us good recommendations for places to go and things to eat. She was super responsive to all of my emails, which was nice because my phone didn't work immediately when I got there. It was clean and very comfortable. Breakfast was really good, with a little of everything. The skylight in the loft is a really cool feature."
