  • Astonding View Of Hilo BAY

"My wife and I stayed in this house in Hilo for two week from mid February to the beginning of March 2016. The property sits on the protected side of Hilo bay about 100 yards from the cruise ship and freight ship pier. While we were there, a cruise ship passed within a few yards of property; close enough to wave to the passengers on the upper deck. The view from the back yard into the bay is relaxing and pleasant. This is also the view seen from inside the living areas of the home because of the homes' unique open design. Facing the bay is the living room with an alcove with a 8 foot wide bay window. On the opposite side of the house is an identical alcove with a large dinning table and a 8 foot wide bay window. Between these is an outdoor protected deck with table and chairs. Behind the living and dinning areas is the kitchen with the cook top on a counter so that the person cooking has a direct view of the bay. We selected to fix all our meals at the house. The kitchen is a little dated but is spacious with plenty of counter and storage space. The kitchen is well equipped with pots and pans and utensils. The only thing missing from the kitchen is a large cutting board and potato masher. There are three spacious bedrooms at the front of the house away from the bay. The house is in a central location; it is half a block to the main road which takes you into town in one direction, and to several close by county beach parks in the other direction. Our favorite park was “ Carlsmith beach park” with a large grass area to sun yourself and large pools of perfectly clear waist high water protected by a lava rock breakwater to take a swim. While we were there, three sea turtles were constant companions. A quarter of a mile toward town this road intersects into a perpendicular highways which takes you to the volcano and the main shopping area. People will tell you that it is always raining in Hilo- Don't believe it! During our 14 day stay, 12 were sunny to mostly sunny days."

  • Great Location

"Perfect relaxing retreat. Location is perfect, a short walk to Richardson Beach Park which is the best beach around (go behind the park building to the right for a great black sand beach and swimming/snorkeling spot). Although there are many other beach parks nearby worth checking out. The house is in the jungle just off of the busy main road, making it very peaceful but still with ocean views and sounds. The Lanai was perfect with the views and sounds, and was where we spent most of the time. We had toddlers, but the lanai was completely fenced in, so we could let them run around the lanai while they searched for geckos! We had been to Hilo before, but keep in mind that this is not a touristy resort area. Very local old time Hawaii feel, which is how we like it! But it is still close to the volcano, waterfalls, hiking, beaches, snorkeling, and great food a short drive away in downtown Hilo. Perfect relaxing location!"

  • A Friendly Home

"I spent one full month in Halekepani House and I enjoyed it immensely. It is vast and comfortable, designed by people who wanted to live in it. You can tell from many details. Bedrooms have their own patio, with the biggest one suitable for outdoor dining and accessible also from the kitchen. The garden goes all around the property. The furniture meets so well with the spirit of the house, which then hosts all the tools, books, ornaments as collected in a lifetime, so you feel you are living in some close friend's house who is temporarily abroad. And very friendly are indeed the owners, Julie and Samuel, who live in another house just across the street. The street and the whole area is very peaceful, no through traffic, no disturbing noise, just bird calls … I wish I could return anytime soon in Halekepani."

  • Spectacular!

"When my husband and I got our first look at the river running through the yard that gives River House Hideaway it's name, we knew we'd found something special. And when we walked through the front door, we wondered how we were ever going to pry ourselves away! The River House made the perfect base for our Hilo area stay. Spotlessly clean, it had all the amenities we needed, including plenty of towels and a well-equipped kitchen, though to be honest, we didn't do much real cooking. Location-wise, it's very convenient to downtown Hilo and the waterfront, several big supermarkets, Target, and a multiplex cinema. Nighttime sounds included the music of the Coqui frogs and the murmur of rain and river. It made for wonderful, restorative sleep. My only caveat is to be mindful of the mosquitoes. I made the mistake of going outside to the riverbank in the early morning to snap some pictures. I got eaten alive!!! Lesson learned! We have family in Hilo, and so most times we stay with them, but when that's not possible, like our most recent visit, we will definitely consider returning to The River House Hideaway. Thank you Mozella and Glenn."
