  • AWESOME | IDEAL | PERFECT

"The property exceeded our expectation. It was ideal central location for our family of four for hiking for waterfalls and visiting Volcano National Park. The house was surrounded by tropical foliage which made you feel you were on the island by your self. The view from the back porch was breath taking. My husband and I enjoyed eating our breakfast on the back porch every morning listening to the birds, frogs, cows and watching the rain. Lyndy was great. She let us check in early and checked in on us to make sure everything was going great. Having the smoothie stand across the street was the icing on the cake. We enjoyed Cafe 100 for dinner. They are known for their Moco Locos and are very reasonably priced. Big Island pizza was also very tasty. For snorkeling we recommend SeaQuest in Kona. You definitely need to visit Volcano National Park and see the flowing lava at night. As for hiking, there are plenty of places to go (easy-strenuous) that you won't be disappointed. Mahalo!"

  • 100% Recommended

"This was an absolutely beautiful place to spend a week and we highly recommend it. First I will say what I am always looking for in these reviews: the house was clean, the linens and towels were very nice, the beds were comfortable. Easily accommodated our family of five. I don't think this house would have worked as well when my kids were younger (they are 12, 14, 16 now) for two reasons: the house is situated on a lava rock cliff right on the ocean and I am a worry wart and would've been scared about little people wandering off, and two, the upstairs two bedrooms are accessed by an outside staircase. We stuck the teenagers up there and they loved it. That said, I will say the view and the sound of the waves was just breathtaking. The kids loved the pool and I loved sitting on the deck enjoying the view while they enjoyed the pool. The house is totally stocked with everything you'll need. We took bike rides around the neighborhood. We used the beach towels provided. Everyday we packed sandwiches and drinks in one of the three coolers in the garage, threw the four beach chairs provided in the car, and set off for a day's adventure around the island. We were so thankful to have the coolers and chairs available. It really made our lives so much easier. We would have liked to have a laundry basket to use, but obviously that was not a big deal. Another bit of advice: Barbara's suggestions on what to explore are great! Very helpful. Definitely purchase your own masks and snorkels before you come. The fins in the house were not very useful because some were broken but most were too small. One pair worked for my 14 year old (size 13 feet). The water everywhere we snorkeled was so buoyant that fins were not even necessary. We couldn't have sunk if we tried. We could float on the top of the water as easily as lying in bed. Amazing! We wished we could have stayed forever. What a fantastic escape for our family. We took a billion pictures and just had a wonderful time. Thank you Barbara and Jack for sharing your house with us. My kids told me to add that the Wi-Fi was fantastic! They all had their devices connected at one time with no issues."

  • Getting Away from Almost All

"We chose to stay at Heaven's Door because it represented a change of pace, an out-of-the-ordinary experience that makes a trip to the Big Island even more memorable, for all the right reasons. Linda was a great host to work with. She's justifiably proud of her property and provides you with all the information you need to ensure your stay is everything you want it to be. The house is spacious, well-appointed and comfortable. There's no A/C, but there are enough fans to cool things down and temperatures dip low enough at night that you won't break a sweat. You'll share that night with seemingly millions of coqui frogs croaking their hearts out. Amazing how you won't notice them after a while even after you've turned up the volume on the TV. You're really in a rain forest, no hype. And it'll probably rain every day you're there, but usually not for too long. As other reviews have duly noted, this is a special property, with the koi ponds, lush vegetation, gorgeous trees and some out-of-the-ordinary neighbors. We only saw one of the feral cats once. No wild pigs or mongoose materialized, though I'm sure they weren't too far away. Not to worry. They don't want to meet you either. We had come from four nights in Waimea, so most of our activities while at Heaven's Door were centered on Hilo (an overlooked gem of a city) and Volcano. The former is about 25 minutes away. The latter slightly over an hour. We made the round-trip to the park twice--doable for a long day trip. The house is well-positioned for exploring the Hamakua and Kohala coasts. You can be in Waimea in about an hour taking the Saddle Road. Bear in mind the house is a decent drive to any groceries or restaurants, so best to plan accordingly and shop for provisions before you arrive. You're kind of "out there." That means Wi-Fi is slow. Instead of cable TV, there's a large DVD collection (we watched "An American in Paris." You won't miss those comforts of home. Bring a book. Fall asleep early. Dream about coming back here another time. Then wake up to another day in paradise. It's why you made the trip."
