  • Getting Away from Almost All

"We chose to stay at Heaven's Door because it represented a change of pace, an out-of-the-ordinary experience that makes a trip to the Big Island even more memorable, for all the right reasons. Linda was a great host to work with. She's justifiably proud of her property and provides you with all the information you need to ensure your stay is everything you want it to be. The house is spacious, well-appointed and comfortable. There's no A/C, but there are enough fans to cool things down and temperatures dip low enough at night that you won't break a sweat. You'll share that night with seemingly millions of coqui frogs croaking their hearts out. Amazing how you won't notice them after a while even after you've turned up the volume on the TV. You're really in a rain forest, no hype. And it'll probably rain every day you're there, but usually not for too long. As other reviews have duly noted, this is a special property, with the koi ponds, lush vegetation, gorgeous trees and some out-of-the-ordinary neighbors. We only saw one of the feral cats once. No wild pigs or mongoose materialized, though I'm sure they weren't too far away. Not to worry. They don't want to meet you either. We had come from four nights in Waimea, so most of our activities while at Heaven's Door were centered on Hilo (an overlooked gem of a city) and Volcano. The former is about 25 minutes away. The latter slightly over an hour. We made the round-trip to the park twice--doable for a long day trip. The house is well-positioned for exploring the Hamakua and Kohala coasts. You can be in Waimea in about an hour taking the Saddle Road. Bear in mind the house is a decent drive to any groceries or restaurants, so best to plan accordingly and shop for provisions before you arrive. You're kind of "out there." That means Wi-Fi is slow. Instead of cable TV, there's a large DVD collection (we watched "An American in Paris." You won't miss those comforts of home. Bring a book. Fall asleep early. Dream about coming back here another time. Then wake up to another day in paradise. It's why you made the trip."

  • Dramatic beachfront home

"Wonderful base from which to explore the eastern side of Big Island. The house is well appointed and extremely quiet and comfortable. The air-conditioning is a definite plus. We loved listening to the waves crashing on the rocks and watching the ocean from the balcony. I would definitely recommend this property to friends and relatives - only wish we could have stayed longer!"

  • Astonding View Of Hilo BAY

"My wife and I stayed in this house in Hilo for two week from mid February to the beginning of March 2016. The property sits on the protected side of Hilo bay about 100 yards from the cruise ship and freight ship pier. While we were there, a cruise ship passed within a few yards of property; close enough to wave to the passengers on the upper deck. The view from the back yard into the bay is relaxing and pleasant. This is also the view seen from inside the living areas of the home because of the homes' unique open design. Facing the bay is the living room with an alcove with a 8 foot wide bay window. On the opposite side of the house is an identical alcove with a large dinning table and a 8 foot wide bay window. Between these is an outdoor protected deck with table and chairs. Behind the living and dinning areas is the kitchen with the cook top on a counter so that the person cooking has a direct view of the bay. We selected to fix all our meals at the house. The kitchen is a little dated but is spacious with plenty of counter and storage space. The kitchen is well equipped with pots and pans and utensils. The only thing missing from the kitchen is a large cutting board and potato masher. There are three spacious bedrooms at the front of the house away from the bay. The house is in a central location; it is half a block to the main road which takes you into town in one direction, and to several close by county beach parks in the other direction. Our favorite park was “ Carlsmith beach park” with a large grass area to sun yourself and large pools of perfectly clear waist high water protected by a lava rock breakwater to take a swim. While we were there, three sea turtles were constant companions. A quarter of a mile toward town this road intersects into a perpendicular highways which takes you to the volcano and the main shopping area. People will tell you that it is always raining in Hilo- Don't believe it! During our 14 day stay, 12 were sunny to mostly sunny days."

  • Beautiful Location

"This is a cute condo located right next to the Carlsmith park. There is a designated parking spot for the condo which is right next to the elevator--very convenient. The condo was very clean and had most everything you would need during your stay (although we did need coffee filters and couldn't find any so bought some.) Beach towels and beach chairs are provided which is a nice touch and we used them when we went to the beach park next door. You don't even need to drive as the park is literally next door! We never made it to the pool, but saw people swimming in it. The front bedroom faces out to the street, which seemed to be a bit noisy from the road, but we slept in the back bedroom and it was quiet. The laundry room is just down the walkway from the condo--very convenient. The only reason I gave this condo 4 stars instead of 5 is because it was so hot and difficult to cool the place down even with the ceiling fan and standup fans. Not having a/c is the norm for most places in Hilo, but it seemed difficult to cool down the condo. We got a good breeze, though, by opening the front door and the lanai sliding door. Even with the heat I would recommend this condo--great location, great price!"
