"We had a great stay & the owners were awesome! Spent a lot of time sitting at the fire pit - plenty of wood provided. Open plan kitchen / dining / living room facing the gas fireplace was wonderful.
A few of the previous renters have been rough on some of the stuff, especially the kitchenware (pots, pans, glassware, etc) and the amenities (bathrooms, appliances) are more serviceable than luxuriant, but all was VERY clean and tidy.
A point of listing clarity - the home has a split level design: you walk into the main living areas (sunroom, living, dining, kitchen), but then you have to go either up a half flight of stairs to the bedrooms that flank a Jack & Jill powder room (the front bdrm has an amazing view of the river & the rear is tucked into the bluff & woods) OR down a half flight of stairs to the basement laundry area flanked by the full bath in one end and the third bedroom in the other end. (The point being that ALL bedrooms are accessed via stairs - which may be an issue for some.)
We stayed in October and the nearby campground was virtually empty, and so was the beach - I can see how it could be a more "energetic" experience during the busy summer months.
There are train tracks at the bottom of the long yard, but surprisingly not that many trains & didn't bother us at all (my kiddos thought they were awesome). The barges on the river were neat too since the channel is pretty close to shore.
Location is close to Dubuque (about 20min) and so is Breitbachs famous dining, but any other entertainments will take you quite bit farther afield... But this place is perfect if you want to sit around a warm fire with an amazing view and super easy access to the only sandy beach around - we were very happy with the visit & plan to return next fall too!"
