The Violet Door offers you a comfortable and stylish 2BR, 1BA apartment bedroom in a classic Marfa adobe. It's a wonderful hotel alternative when you want a kitchen and room to stretch.
The key to our colored door apartments is location, location, location. You are in the heart of Marfa's gallery district. The Get Go Specialty Grocery is across the street. Restaurants, coffee shops, the Marfa Book Company, and the Saturday morning (April-Dec.) farmer's market are within two blocks. You can come to Marfa and never use your car.
Marfa is the world-famous home of American minimalist art at the Chinati Foundation Museum, Judd Foundation, and Donald Judd residence, with unparalleled installations of Judd, Dan Flavin, Roni Horn, and more. In addition to the galleries and other cultural attractions, Marfa at 5000 feet offers dry and perfect whether year round; even the hot summer days are balanced by magical nights.
Escape to Marfa and after your Chinati and gallery visits, enjoy the spectacular Rio Grande drive to Big Bend National Park and/or the charming Mexican border town of Ojinaga. You'll see why film director Paul Anderson chose Marfa for 'There Will be Blood' (with Daniel Day-Lewis) and the Coen Brothers chose the town for their film of Cormac McCarthy's 'No Country for Old Men.' Not to mention that other film, with, who were they? Dean, Hudson and Taylor? Whatever!

Even though Marfa itself, in my opinion, is overrated--I had the idea that there would be many galleries, restaurants, and shops, and in reality there are a few of each--Stay Marfa is a very good value. The kitchen is well stocked with almost anything you might need, and even though it's booked as a one bath, there is an outside shower that my friend used exclusively. We thoroughly enjoyed the private back patio and spent most of our "at home" time there. The free wireless was a big plus, too, since we had come from Big Bend and no cell service of any sort. The only reason I would not give Stay Marfa/Violet Door a five is that the furnishings are worn, particularly the carpet, which is frayed and dirty looking. Also, a warning: there is a step up into the bathroom! After both of us stubbing our toes many times, my friend finally had the bright idea of putting a book down in front of the door as a visual reminder of the step. You cannot beat the location, which is directly across from Marfa Ballroom and a great organic grocery store.Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, families with teenagers.

What a wonderful adventure we had in Marfa, beginning with the delightful STAY MARFA flats, directly across the street from the BEST grocery store in town and the famous Ballroom Gallery. The Violet Apartment was clean, comfortable, spacious . . . and dealing with the proprietors was easy. Walking distance from the heart of Marfa also makes this place a TEN. I would recommend it to anyone visiting.Recommended for: Tourists without a car, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, families with teenagers.

This apartment is awesome for a small family! My son got to choose his own room, which made him feel grown up and we could all have our privacy and still stay close together. The satellite TV was awesome for my son, who doesn't get to watch at home, and we had plenty of space. The crowning glory was the patio, completely private yet open to the outdoors, it was a wonderful place to relax with my husband after our son fell asleep. Perfect place to enjoy a cup of coffee or glass of wine, and the additional outdoor shower was a trip! Marfa is a great town, awesome food and atmosphere, very pleasant visit!Recommended for: Sightseeing, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+.

Traveled to Marfa as a get away with another couple and found this apt to be well priced, comfortable and clean. Parked right in front, interesting, healthy small grocery across the street, walking distance to galleries, private patio in back a plus - and sweet place to be in the cool evenings and early morning. Bonus: owners took the time and effort to return forgotten camera charger! Thank you! We will be back.Recommended for: Girls getaway, families with young children, romantic getaway.

We stayed here in March 2011 for 2 nights with our kids (ages 10, 7 and 2). We loved it there, it's very simple, bright, airy, loved the location, walking to the grocery and art gallery across the street, parking directly in front of unit for easy loading/unloading, the backyard, etc. There are two bedrooms with doors, ceiling fans, dressers, and somewhat uncomfortable beds (but I'm spoiled by my mattress at home. Their sofa was more than a comfortable alternative). The bathroom is off of the living area (important for us, as we didn't want to have to go through a bedroom to get to the bathroom in the middle of the night. After renting other VRBOs that aren't what they say they are, we were very happily surprised that this place lived up to its online description. We will definitely be back to Marfa, and this is where we'll stay again.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, people with disabilities, girls getaway, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Great place to just veg on the sofa. During commercials just ran across the street to the fabulous little grocery store, Get Go, for ice cream and snacks. When I was ready to go out, walked to yoga classes at Marfa bookstore, glorious yoga space in the back, every morning. Got one of the best massages I have ever had from Suzie. Cute little shops across the street with crafts night on Wednesday night. Knitting, embroidery, beading anything you want to learn and do. Two blocks to downtown to eat and people watch. All to say......this is a great place to hang in if you need and the perfect location to go out and walk to amazing services and amenities. I loved it.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Great location for Marfa. Easy to walk everywhere and quiet at night. Kitchen was a bit oddly laid out with wires across some areas. Beds are comfortable but low. Great living room with cable and Internet. Loved the patio and our dogs appreciated the sprinklers. Too cool to use the outdoor shower but would have if it were warmer. Would definitely stay here again!Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, families with young children, pet owners.

Our family of four and puppy stayed at Tom Jacob's Violet Door in mid- September. The apartment was clean, spacious, and beautifully decorated! The outdoor shower was fun to bathe in under that glorious sky of Marfa! It was a good choice for a homebase for all the traveling we did, plus we got to really explore Marfa on foot. We had a great time and will visit the Violet door again! Thanks Tom and Vilis!Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 3/3
