San Geronimo Retreat in the Redwoods- Awesome & Economical
- Minimum stay:Contact owner
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:Yes
- Wheel chair accessible:No
Have your own private room and share this amazing custom 3500 square foot home in San Geronimo Valley located in the AMAZING West Marin redwoods! Somewhat like a bed and breakfast... without the breakfast! The house is completely furnished, including your room with contemporary furnishings. There are typically 2 rooms to choose from, the Harmony Room and the Tranquility Room. Both rooms have lovely redwood views and provide two 100% organic Turkish cotton bathrobes for your use and enjoyment while visiting. The rooms are also stocked with coffee, sugar, teas, hot chocolate and popcorn!
The Harmony room is furnished in dark plums and browns with ivory accents. It has a nature / trees / floral motif (and yet not feminine looking) ... It has a queen sized bed with memory foam pad and feather comforter, heating blanket, nightstands, 2 dressers, cable TV, stereo, new refrigerator, new microwave, new coffee maker, closet and a chair. It is great for people that might be staying longer, for there is more clothing storage. This is a beautiful room with art of orchids and magnolia blooms.
The Tranquility room is furnished in sunset colors of rusts and purples, with a sailing motif (and yet not masculine looking) ... It has a queen sized bed with memory foam pads, heating blanket, fluffy comforter, nightstands, TV, stereo, a butcher block table and 3 stools for eating / computer use / studying. It has a mini kitchen including a refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, toaster oven and hot plate. It is great for people that might want to come up for the weekend or a week or two, for it is more self contained and may suit someone or a couple that wants to retreat without as much interaction with others in the house.
The large kitchen facilities are available for all to use. Also shared is the entry and public areas of the house. (Living room with fireplace, dining room, breakfast room, laundry, kitchen, hot tub and decks)
We provide a lending library of DVD movies to suit almost any taste and there is cable TV throughout,
The hot tub is located just behind the house and is only about 5 years old. It is the perfect place to get a jet massage while enjoying the redwood forest.
Oh, and last but not least... "Must Love Dogs". Pets are welcome; as long as they are 4 legged and bark (as opposed to meow)and you have prior approval from us. We have 2 dogs already at the house, Hansel (a miniature american eskimo mix) and Tasha (a Tibetan Terrier) are both loving rescued shelter and humaine society dogs.
This is a magical place that we call home, and we share it only to loving people that appreciate the beauty and wilderness that only the San Geronimo redwood valley can provide.
FULL HOUSE AVAILABLE LATE AUGUST // EARLY SEPTEMBER. Rates available upon request.
The Master Bedroom is the addition to make a full house rental when available.
Amenities:
Hot tub with a view of the redwood forest by day, and starry sky by night.
There is a heated dog room with a dog door and fenced yard.
There is plenty of parking.
Activities and Attractions:
San Geronimo Valley is close to Fairfax... and Point Reyes Station... in West Marin. It is a 45 minute drive to San Francisco, 20 minute drive to San Rafael, 15 minute drive to Point Reyes Station, 10 minute drive to Fairfax, 5 minute drive to Samuel P. Taylor State Park.
Dining / Entertainment: The Two Bird Cafe is in walking distance from the house. It offers home cooked gourmet breakfast, lunch and dinner with a wonder wine selection. In a short drive over the "hill", you will be in Fairfax, the home of great restaurants, shopping, Movie Theater, Iron Springs Brewery, live music, and farmers market during the summer. San Rafael is just a bit further which offers even more dining, shopping, theaters, and a downtown-wide farmers market during the summer on Thursday nights with entertainment, gifts and children's rides.
Hiking: The house is situated in a park like setting on 1.5 acres of redwoods. It backs up to 1600 acres of wilderness with hiking and equestrian trails nearby. There is a seasonal creek that runs through the side area...and the Papermill creek running nearby where you can still watch the Coho and steelhead spawning. It is a bit out in the country... but that is what we love about it! There are hundreds of miles of hiking in the shadow of Mount Tamalpais.
Biking: Marin is the birthplace of the mountain bike, with miles and miles of open terrain to discover. There are 2 mountain bikes that are available to use (must have bike shoes). Street biking is also very poplar here, and many local coffee stands and pastry shops cater to touring bikes.
Boating: The house has 2 river kayaks to borrow and a hobie cat sailboat. There are a few places to take them locally, let us know when booking if this may be of interest to you so that they can ready upon your arrival!
Beaches: Point Reyes, Bolinas and Stinson Beach are all fairly close
Golf: The world class 18 hole San Geronimo Valley Golf Course is right across the street! It is open to the public, with a clubhouse restaurant for breakfast and lunch, and some dinners.
Local parks: Samuel P. Taylor State Park, Mount Tamalpais State Park, Point Reyes National Seashore, Muir Woods National Monument
We are happy to share our tour books, dog park books, hiking and biking trail maps and give recommendations for day trips.

What we love!-- The place was comfortable, cozy, and easy to settle into. The directions to the house and guidelines for usage were clear and helpful. The movie selection was nice and the lighting inside and all around the property were EXCEPTIONAL. The view of the trees and near by trails made nature therapy really easy. The kitchen was user friendly and stocked with equipment. Being dog and family friendly is another huge plus. The view from the hot tub was the perfect addition to cold rainy days. Some things we would've liked different-- We're environmentally aware bunch so there were a couple of things we wished were different. The upstairs living room was drafty and hard to heat, even with a fire. The bedroom windows, not being insulated, let out a lot of heat so being encouraged to not use multiple towels seemed like a minor earth friendly feature compared to the major waste of heat escaping constantly. Being concerned with Teflon poisoning, we mainly used the stainless steel cooking ware because the non-stick cooking ware were scratched up probably from previous guests not following kitchen directions. Not sure if you can do anything about it, but the neighbor's dogs barked and barked, making for prolonged noisy departures and arrivals. We would have liked more detailed instructions on using the entertainment systems and the thermostats in the bedrooms as they were not user-friendly.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.
Owner response: We are happy that you "mostly" like the place! I am sorry that we were out of town at the same time as you visited, or I could have personally explained that the intructions for the entertainment centers and the thermostats were in your welcome binders in each of the bedrooms.... I suppose you could have also called me or emailed me if you had questions. Cannot comment on the single pane windows, for we do the best that we can with the 49 windows in the house..... we pay dearly for the redwood views, and have had many bids to replace the windows in excess of , $150,000... we use storm windows, and have the heating programmed, and of course, provide wool slippers from germany, egyptian cotton robes and many throw blankets for your comfort. Most people know that everyone dresses in layers here, and come equipped with sweaters and sweats, and warm socks when they visit over the winter season....Heck, it is even cold in the redwoods in the summer if you are not used to it! . I do not think anyone wants me to raise the rates to cover $150,000 worth of new windows. I see you still ave us 5 stars... so I suppose the good far outweighed the bad!

The San Geronimo Retreat is a wonderful pied-a-terre for anyone looking to explore Marin County and the San Francisco Bay. It is a beautiful property, very private, nestled in the redwoods but located in the heart of Marin County and a short driving distance away from many points of interest such as the quaint villages of Faifax and San Anselmo with their wonderful restaurants (we recommed Indian and Thai), organic markets, boutiques and antique shops. Point Reyes Station is also close by: There one can savour fresh local oysters . For the adventurous at heart, it also provides easy access to many beautiful beaches for surfing or kiteboarding, tons of hiking trails, and biking routes. After a day of exploring, it was good to come back to the peacefulness of the retreat, build a fire and share stories around the fireplace. Inga and Trey are wonderful hosts and know how to make any guest feel comfortable. The house is as described and photographed but no add can depict how comfortable it was. The bedrooms are a great size and very well appointed and the bed VERY comfortable. The view from the windows is amazing. My husband and I stayed there for three weeks and we picked the harmony room as it offered more storage. It was perfect! Note that Inga's kitchen has anything one's need to cook wonderful meals should you decide to stay in for dinner! Last but not least, we feel fortunate to have found such a comfortable, clean pet friendly accomodations. Inga and Trey understand the value of finding a home away from home and so THANK YOU!!Recommended for: Sightseeing, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.

We had a lovely stay. It was our honeymoon and it was a great, unusual and fun idea to stay here. There are no coverings on the window in the bedroom so you woke up with the beautiful sunshine. We were only minutes from an incredible natural foods store so we always started our day with delicious eats. Hiking, shopping and adventure around every bend. The listing was accurate from what was listed on Craigslist. The property was very clean and well maintained. The owner was incredibly gracious and communicated on any questions we had. We would recommend this property to anyone looking for a serene get away. We are already planning our trip back....we miss Cali already!Recommended for: Sightseeing, adventure seekers, age 55+.

Dear Inga & Trey, We can't thank you enough for opening your beautiful home for us to enjoy. Our only regret is that we get to stay longer... maybe next time we will enjoy the jacuzzi:) Sorry about falling down the stairs... hahaha! We will email you the info on the wedding venue, should you choose to consider it down the line... it was very cool to stand on a platform where the Dead used to party and play music:)Enjoy your trip to Oregon! Owner info
Year Purchased: 2006
About the owner: Trey and I met 9 years ago sailing and share our love for the outdoors, and all activities associated with it. We love hosting in our home, and have met so many beutiful people from all parts of the world through doing this.
Why the Owner Chose San Geronimo:
Trey and I purchased the home to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The moment you drive over the mountain into the San Geronimo Valley, you are immediatly drawn to the country ways, horses, cattle, deer... and of course the beauty of the valley! We live on the property and enjoy coming home to a vacation every day.... life is great out here! Close enough to civilization, but a feeling of being in the middle of nature.
I have always enjoyed going to gausthouses in Austria while growing up, so i wanted to do the same here. It is somewhat like a bed and breakfast, however... much more affordable... because with the full kitchen available to all.... I do not provide breakfast!
The Unique Benefits at this Bed And Breakfast:
We have been told that the favorite thing at our property is waking up in the extremely comfortable beds to the large picture window within the redwoods. It has been descibed many times as like waking up in a treehouse. People love to sleep in here, and just relax. Hiking and exploring come in a close second to favorite activities!
