Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2004

Robert Winquist has had extensive experience both as an educator and entrepreneur. He has a PhD in Higher Education from the University of Iowa and was a University Professor, Vice President and administrator for many years. From 1993-2007 he served as the President and CEO of Vending Supply Inc., a Nevada corporation that designed and printed and distributed one billion machine vended children's stickers and temporary tattoos. Robert is an Minister of the Universal Life church, who performs weddings on the beach. He has four beautiful sons and daughters and is an avid fisherman. Robert owns a ranch in the Sierra Laguna mountains, east of Pescadero, and enjoys taking guests on tours of the area.

Why the Owner Chose Todos Santos

Growing up in a family that loved camping on the Baja, I always knew I wanted to retire here. Somewhere that was easy to get to, natural and pristine. I drove the entire peninsula many times looking for the perfect spot. Whenever I drove through Pescadero I couldn't stop smiling because it felt so right. I honestly believe this is one of those powerful spots on the planet that attracts good energy. Robert's Place as a gathering spot for friends and family has grown into a reality that we are happy to share with others.

The Unique Benefits of this Country House / Chateau

Surprisingly, one of the daily benefits I enjoy is driving the single lane dirt farm road that leads 1 mile out to the highway. The experience of slowing way down to enjoy the lushness of the crops and the pace at which they grow is its own reward. The standard of courtesy and kindness exchanged between very different types of people as we pull over to make room for each other is a genuine old Mexico experience.

Another hidden benefit which reveals the relaxing approach to living here is Whale Watching - Pescadero Style. You can sit for hours watching whales breach and spout as they swim past in front of the house. On a calm day it is possible to kayak out and sit quietly as a pod of whales passes within a hundred feet of you. Sometimes they linger for days outside of the breaking waves near shore. If you are the adventurous type, borrow a mask and fins and swim out! Welcome to Whale Watching - Pescadero Style!

Vacationing here is like living in a nature sanctuary. Egrets feed in the tide pools. Fishermen cast from shore for Spanish Mackerel and Rooster fish at dawn. And bonfires on the beach are a tradition. This is the Baja I knew as a child.

THE BEST VACATION WE HAVE EVER HAD!

Guest: Barb (Woodinville, WA)
Date of Stay: 11/29/10 Review Submitted: 11/19/11

Nine of us spent a glorious 8 days in Robert's home for my daughter's 50th birthday celebration. Everyone was totally comfortable in the home - those who wanted more privacy, had alternatives to the main house. The home is filled with charming rusticity - very comfy furniture and every convenience. Don't worry if you track in a little sand! There was bottled water in the kitchen and baths, so everyone stayed healthy and happy. The kitchen is large, so we often had three cooks working away. We grilled several nights on Robert's gigantic barbecue grill. We ate under the stars on the patio overlooking the ocean. There are views of the ocean from so many rooms - I slept beside a window that gave me a star-studded night view plus the ocean. The pounding of the surf is the best sleep inducer! All this made it possible within 24 hours to forget the trials and concerns of our reality left back home! Robert is the best of all possible hosts - there when you need local knowledge or assistance, and invisible when you want to do your own thing. The beach rarely had more than 8-10 people on it - and the water was WARM!! Half the clothes packed stayed in the suitcase, as the uniform of the day was a bathing suite and pareo (Mexican sarong). Robert introduced us to Baja Beans - the best coffee! The town of Todos Santos is charming and the bar across from Hotel California makes the best mojitos you have ever tasted! The beach house is about 10-15 minutes from the town - 'way off the highway via winding dirt roads. When you pass Einstein, the burro, you'll know you're almost there! There are really no words to describe the "other-worldly" feeling one gets after a couple of days at Robert's. For the first time, you will find yourself thinking seriously about chucking it all back home and becoming a Pescadero Beach gringo/gringa! We could hardly bear to leave - and we will be back! This must be the best of Baja California - may it never change!

Awesome location! Great with kids, too!

If you're looking for a great getaway OFF the beaten path, look no further. First off, the location is just superb. This property is directly in front of the beach. If you surf, you are located with a 5 minute walk to some great surfing. Whale watching is spectacular, almost unbelievable. During our stay whales were breaching all the time. Robert has kayaks that you can take out into the ocean. The sunsets are extraordinary. Robert's place is very comfortable. His kitchen is fully stocked with all appliances and everything you will need to make all your meals. The main living area is spacious with a nice pool table and large peninsula with bar stools. The outside patio is also large and houses a fabulous trampoline. The kids love it (and the adults, too!). Robert has space for lots of people and families. He most recently added a room that we called "the kids dorm" and enough space to sleep about 10 kids. If you're wondering what's nearby: You can walk down the beach 10 minutes and take in morning Yoga at Rancho Pescadero (a chic spa resort), you can walk 5 minutes to have the most divine massage of a lifetime and enjoy the sweat lodge onsite (if you like), you can drive 10 minutes and have some of the best Napoli pizza I've ever tasted, you can drive 10 minutes to a lovely, almost deserted beach that has a stream running into it and gorgeous caves within the hills, or you can drive 20 minutes into Todos Santos for a taste of a quaint, local town. You'll find some good restaurants and lots of tourist shops. That said, my favorite moments were hanging out on the patio, watching the whales breach during sunset. Robert is a very generous host with his time. He'll tell you local stories, history, politics, etc. Or if you just want your own space, he gets that, too. Robert provided us with insights into all the best things to see/do that are mentioned above. He definitely was a part of our great experience, he even met the 1st arrival in our group to go grocery shopping in Cabo before heading to Pescadero!

Great time. Weather was a little cool. Accomodations were great, very comfortable. We stayed in the studio. Robert was very helpful with directions, activity ideas, and supplies. He even lent us his wetsuit when the others were being used. The trampoline was fun, too. Next time I'd rent a surfboard if the weather is warmer and we had more time. I'd also bring a flashlight for reading in bed, and stay at the house more! We drove to town almost every day. It was very relaxing to walk on the beach. Property was clean. I'd recommend this property. The Saturday market in Todo Santos was fun. Felippes restaurant was good and we found exceptional coffee at Baja Bean operated by gringos. Driving in Cabo can be scary and confusing, so take your time and do not rush.

Wouldn't spend my vacation anywhere else!

Guest: Rose (Oregon/Baja)

This was a great place to stay on the oceanfront. You rarely see another person on the beach. There's a full kitchen, a pool table, a trampoline, comfortable beds, hot tub, bonfire set up, pretty landscaping and decor, kayaks, surfing, and hosts that will do anything to make you feel at home. It's a beautiful spot and I would recommend it to anyone of any age because there's a huge variety of things to do around. We were a group of about 10 college students and really felt like we were living a luxurious life at Robert's Place! It was the best spring break any of us have ever had.

where the sun always shines

Guest: Caroline (California)

Imagine being perched up high with glass all around, and waking to the sound of steady rhythmic waves, and a glorious full spectrum sunrise sky painted across the craggy ridge of the Sierra Laguna mountains, then panning the horizon north to west to see the vast Pacific ocean and dramatic surf while Humpback and Gray whales breach nearby. Spend the afternoon walking for miles south on a clean beach (playa limpia) passing only a handful of people perhaps, until the sun slips into the sea leaving another spectacular watercolor sky. Robert's place is pure magic and offers a range of accommodations that spans the scale of autonomy and privacy to spontaneous community. His is definitely a slice of heaven on earth and so easy to get to, especially from anywhere on the West Coast. You want to be there!!

great family reunion

Guest: chris (Eugene,Oregon)
Date of Stay: 11/22/10 Review Submitted: 12/02/10

Roberts place was a perfect spot for our large family reunion (21 people). For that large a group the sleeping arrangements required some flexibility, but Robert was wonderful at working with us to see that we were all comfortable. The setting was spectacular, right up front on the beach, whales stopped by daily and the beach toys (boogie boards, kayaks, surf board etc.) were readily available. The kitchen was fine for preparing large meals. Robert is to be highly commended as a host. He provided information on food shopping, beaches, spa treatments (a neighboring masseuse) restaurants, and even guided us himself at times. I highly recommend this spot for those seeking something comfortable but a bit different from the ordinary.

This is a magical place...

Guest: Teresa (Los Angeles, Ca)
Date of Stay: 06/15/10 Review Submitted: 08/26/10

The ocean views, the pounding surf; a place to open up your mind. My husband and I went for a writing retreat. I did some of the best writing I've ever done there and it was because I was away from everything -- phones, the city, distraction. And when I looked out the window at that magnificent view I was eager to sit there and write because it's too beautiful to leave. (truly, most of my friends went into Todo Santos or Cabo or La Paz for dinner and sightseeing but I rarely left) Here you can be alone with your thoughts. Or if you want to be out in the world you can go into Pescadero down the road for a local meal -- Felipe's is a short distance up the highway, excellent food -- or to the Sandbar (Wed is all-you-can-eat pizza night!) a local bar that's outside under a mango tree. (we watched a very memorable NBA championship game there with geckos running up and down the wall) The house is in a quiet neighborhood on the beach. His house is a ten minute drive on a dirt road from the main road (which is in the process of being modernized from Cabo - La Paz) so this area feels like an undiscovered gem. (good to have a car, you can rent one in Todo Santos if you don't rent one in Cabo) The house is right on the sand. Each morning I would make my tea and walk a few feet down an incline in front of his house to watch the surf. There were never more than a handful of people on miles of empty beach. It was so peaceful and the beach so pristine. (where else would the "trash" on the beach be dead puffer fish?) This vista is how I'd like all beaches to look. (180 degrees from the touristy beaches of Cabo) There are usually other visitors staying in the house so you can meet new people if you wish or do your own thing. We were in the studio apartment in the guesthouse. We had privacy which was great for writing. But we had a blast talking to Robert who was always eager to show us around or tell us stories or encourage us to take a kayak into the water. (the current is pretty strong at the beach so you should be a pretty competent swimmer to do more than take a dip) When it was time to go I did not want to leave. I still think fondly of my time there and find myself mindlessly checking the calendar (when I should be writing) fantasizing about when I will go back. And if I'm lucky, Tommy, the magic writing cat (my muse and Robert's cat) will be waiting for me. Until then Tommy's picture is the screensaver on my computer, I'm that hooked. Thanks Robert!

Robert's Place is Cool!!!!

Guest: Lynne G (Reno, Nevada)
Date of Stay: 10/24/09 Review Submitted: 04/24/10

Robert's Place is an experience worth having because it's not the run of the mill vacation. From the time you leave the highway from Cabo and travel down the country road past chili fields, mango and avocado orchards and fences lined bougainvillaea, you are headed for a very unique adventure at this beachfront oasis. Once you arrive, you instantly feel at home as Robert, the owner and host has an engaging personality. He is full of enthusiasm, tells entertaining stories and is very knowledgeable about the area. He built this place for maximum fun in a relaxed and casual atmosphere. We stayed in the second floor studio apartment with fantastic ocean views from all windows. It is new, clean, comfortable and tastefully finished with floor to ceiling wood cabinets, Mexican tile accents in the kitchen and bathroom and the A/C was greatly appreciated. My favorite activity was walking on the deserted beach for miles past the turtle egg hatchery and watching the whales go by. That was unbelievable! Taking the kayak out into the ocean and paddling around with a fishing pool wasn't bad either. Meeting the other people staying at Robert's place was interesting and added to the ambience of the place. Robert's Place is a great place with a great location at a remarkably reasonable place. We liked it so much we are planning to go back and take some friends with us!
