Palm Desert Homestead Cabin, Best Views in Valley
- Minimum stay:N/A
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:Yes
- Wheel chair accessible:No
My Aunt and Uncle homesteaded this Cahuilla Hills land in 1948 and built the cabin, affectionately known as "The Bird Cage". There was no electricity or water at that time; now we have both, as well as heat and A/C. The Homestead is a little less than 500 sq. ft. with a "million dollar view" of the Coachella Valley, surrounding Santa Rosa Mountains, and Bighorn Golf Club. It's one of the last homesteads in our area. It sits atop a hill in Cahuilla Hills, an area now know for million dollar homes on minimum 5 acre lots; however, the location is only 2 miles from downtown Palm Desert.
The Birdcage has one small bedroom with a new queen sized bed, a small bathroom with a good size shower (with a window), and a living/dining/kitchen room - all with beautiful views. There is a covered/shaded patio as well as a sunny patio, perfect for relaxation while enjoying the beautiful day and starry night views among Nature's lovely landscaping.
Our family owns 4 homes on the surrounding acres. They are spread out from one another. Privacy is secured by electronic gates and it's a very safe area. We are raising date palms at the bottom of the hill.

Everything about this cabin is amazing. The decor, location, view, and amenities all contribute to a feeling of complete serenity. The owner Ann and her daughter are extremely gracious hosts, and the bottle of Prosecco that is waiting upon arrival doesn't hurt either :-) This is a perfect retreat for anyone looking to escape the pressures of daily life, and I'm already looking forward to the next stay. In short, I couldn't recommend this gorgeous hideaway more highly and I encourage everyone to consider a stay here. You'll walk away feeling just like I do!!Did you find this review helpful? While looking for the perfect spot to spend Christmas and New Year's, we stumbled across 'The Birdcage', and immediately knew we had found a little piece of heaven! Put a call in to Ann, and yes, she had just had a cancellation. We were supposed to arrive on the 23rd, but were delayed until Christmas Day, and arrived at 5pm. Had the foresight to stop for wine, but where does one stop for food on Christmas Day? Pulled up to our cabin, and it was more than what we could have possibly imagined. Crisp night air, twinkling lights down below and our glorious little cabin. Decided to head down to Ann's and say our hellos, and there she was, packing up turkey dinner for us. Yes indeed...a little piece of heaven! We had friends also visiting from Vancouver, and we invited them over for cocktails and dinner one night. Had to make use of our outdoor 'Tiki Bar' and mix a batch of Margaritas. This is something you only dream of telling your friends about. Yes, our own outdoor "Tiki Bar' along with one of those little outdoor wood ovens. Perfection. The cabin is truly remarkable, and is almost a living museum. Retro and cool and oh so interesting. Every little corner holds a new something to discover. There's also a good stack of jazz and big band CD's, a good selection of books, a well equipped kitchen, and lots of outdoor space. Very warm and comfortable inside, and a great bed as well. One of the most excting things was waking up to so much light - all four walls have windows, so if you like to wake up to sunshine streaming in at 6:40AM, this is the place to do it. Loved it. This place is truly something special, and it's as little or as much as you want it to be. We spent some lazy days just reading on the sunny deck, but also took advantage of everything else that was around us. Great hiking trails right outside the door. There's a book filled with brochures on things to do, as well as a whole list of recommended restaurants. Ann is incredibly helpful and full of information, and eager and willing to share. So, our only worry is that everyone else is going to discover this little treasure and we'll never be able to get back in! It was a perfect setting - set high up in the hills and overlooking the lights down below. A little secluded yet very private. The views were truly magnificent. We really can't rave enough about this place, and it's truly one of the most original and wonderful places we've ever stayed in. Can't wait to get back for another visit!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing, families with young children.

The Birdcage is everything Ann describes it as being! If you want an eclectic, private, off the beaten path kind of place to stay, this one's great. At the same time, it is only a few minutes drive down the hill to central Palm Desert. My wife and I loved having morning coffee on the huge patio area, watching all kinds of little birds fly into the ocotillo bush right in front of us to have their flower nectar breakfast......then in the evening to sit on the same patio and enjoy a glass of wine while watching the evening colour on the Joshua Tree mountains across the valley, until the stars and the lights of Palm Desert took over. The bed is comfortable, the living/dining area the same, and the kitchen is well outfitted to make all kinds of meals. You can even use the barbeque as an oven if you really want to-we did, and it worked well. The pictures and decorations are eclectic and a bit eccentric, adding further charm to the cabin. Ann is a gracious hostess, there when we needed to talk to her, but giving us privacy at all other times. We highly recommend the Homestead cabin-we will certainly stay there again when we next visit Palm Desert! David & NancyRecommended for: Adventure seekers, romantic getaway, sightseeing.
