Do you long for…

The majesty of a panoramic ocean view lit by the glow of a tropical sunset?
The grandeur of a star-filled sky unbroken by streetlights or civilization?
The relaxation of watching ocean waves and swaying palms from your patio?
The enjoyment of a steaming cup of coffee, a good book, and a beautiful sunrise?
The solitude of a perfectly quiet evening touched only by the sounds of birdsong and breezes?

But also want…

The fun of swimming and relaxing in your private pool and sun deck?
The joy of swimming and snorkeling with the turtles at a stunning black sand beach?
The excitement of exploring a volcanic wonderland of lava flows and ancient caverns?
The romance of a soothing spa and glass of wine under a tropical sky?
The convenience of nearby shopping, gas, dining, and community library/clubhouse?

Then this might be the perfect spot for you to enjoy your stay in paradise!

Located 45 miles south of Kailua-Kona and 60 miles from Hilo, we offer the wonderful experience of 'Old Hawaii' with its serenity, quiet, and charm. In addition, we are ideally located to allow you to explore both sides of the Big Island. A five minute trip up to the highway takes you to the growing town of Ocean View, with its grocery and hardware stores, restaurants, gas stations, farmers market, and an active community center with library and computer center.

Nearby must-see attractions include the black sand beach at Punalu'u, the green-sand beach and cliffs at South Point, Volcano National Park, and Kula Kai caverns. For the hikers, don't miss walking about 2 ½ miles down to the beach and lagoon at Pohue Bay where you will likely have it to yourselves (especially on a week day). A quick trip to the quaint town of Na'alehu lets you avail yourselves of organically grown local produce, local style restaurants with live music, and a fabulous bakery. Journeying a bit further takes you through lush rain forest to the Kapoho Tidepools with its outstanding snorkeling and abundant sea life.

On the Kona side, you can take time to kayak with the dolphins in Kealakekua Bay and enjoy one of the best snorkeling spots in the state! Of course, you can always head up to Kona or Hilo and enjoy the many sights and experiences they offer and still have plenty of time to return home for dinner on the lanai at sunset.
Hale Li'ili'i Maluhia, or 'Little House of Peace', is at 600' elevation and 2 miles from the coast, providing panoramic ocean views and perfect temperatures and humidity year round. Its unique location at the southern end of the island allows you to experience both fantastic sunsets and sunrises! Because of our low elevation and the cooling trade winds, we are rarely affected by the vog that can affect the Kona Coast. But we are still on the sunny side, where we don't have the rain and the bugs of the Hilo side

Hale Li'ili'i Maluhia is 700 sq. ft. and features an open floor plan with a living area, dining area, breakfast bar, kitchen, and large bath. The entire unit is located on ground level, providing easy access without the need to negotiate stairs. We provide a laptop computer and high speed internet. There are two large glass sliding doors providing abundant light and air which open onto the pool and patio area.

With a king size bed and 32' flat screen TV with Dish Network, it is a great place to relax at the end of a long day of sightseeing and swimming. Two ceiling fans supplement the tradewinds and provide a restful cooling breeze.
The kitchen is open, with a breakfast bar for informal dining. It is well equipped and has oak cabinets. It is ready for you to make your favorite island dishes or just pop something in the microwave for a quick snack. We have tried to provide everything you might need to feel completely at home. If you do need something special, it is usually readily available at the local market.

The pool and spa area is spacious and enclosed by lava rock walls. The 20' x 40' pool is covered to allow for solar heating and is surrounded by tiered concrete decking. A propane fired 5' x 7' spa sits adjacent to the pool for soothing away your tensions at the end of the day. Lounge chairs and a table set allow for relaxation and seating and a gas barbecue is available for outdoor dining. Please note that this area is shared with a upstairs rental when occupied. Please be neighborly and bring the spirit of 'aloha' toward your fellow guests if present.

To foster the spirit of quiet and solitude, please be courteous and observe 'quiet hours' before 8:00 AM and after 9:00 PM if the upstairs unit is occupied.

Please see listing # 325889 for information about the upstairs rental and for additional pics of the property.

What a great stay we have had! Not long enough, though! The place is clean and comfortable - terrific view and the sunsets are oh-so-wonderful. The hike to the lagoon and beach was so very worth the challenge for this out of shape grandma from Alaska - it is a "MUST DO" for all who can. Bob and Sue are great hosts - they made us feel at home. Would love to return with our large family and rent the whole place! Aloha and mahalo

We have never been to a place where the sight and sounds of humanity do not exist. It is here! And it is wonderful! Quiet with just the sound of the wind. Private/green sand/black sand beaches and a hot tub to come home to. Very, very nice.

We felt the "Aloha Spirit" the moment we arrived. A quiet oasis in the middle of an old lava flow. The home is clean & comfortable. Our hosts were informative and kind (making us feel right at home). We liked being away from the busyness of Kona and still close enough to plenty of interesting places. We would like to return with our large family & rent the whole home.

Owner response: Bonnie, it was a pleasure meeting you! We would welcome you back with the whole clan in the future. Glad you enjoyed your time. Thanks for staying with us. Bob and Sue

My daughter and I enjoyed our stay very much. We appreciated the solitude and peaceful environment as well as a great place to " come home " to every evening. The only caveat is the distance we had to travel to the things we wanted to do and see each day. Volcanoes National Park is about an hour away but it is a scenic drive and the time passed quickly. The amenities are very good. We had everything we needed to make our stay comfortable with groceries available nearby when we wanted to cook ourselves.

                Recommended for: Age 55+, sightseeing.

Owner response: We are so glad you enjoyed your stay! And we can identify with your caveat about distance. It seems like where ever you are on the island, something is going to be far away. Of course, thats probably why its called the Big Island... Bob and Sue

Quiet, clean and very comfortable. The stars are amazing. The owners are very attentive. It is a perfect location for visiting both sides of the island. It doesn't have the rain of Hilo or the vog of Kona. Highly recommended.

Owner response: Nancy, thanks for the nice review. We, too, like the location out of the rain and vog. And the night skies are hard to beat when the weather is clear! Bob and Sue

We really enjoyed staying at this property. We certainly weren't ready to return home! The studio is much larger than we expected, very clean, and had all of the amenities we needed. We were pleasantly surprised to have an eating table and sitting area, in addition to the kitchen and sleeping areas shown in the photos. Don't let the word "studio" deter you from staying here for fear of being cramped for space - there is plenty of room to spread out (not to mention the patio space and pool area). One reason we chose to stay here was the location. Having visited the Big Island before, I knew we wanted to stay in a convenient place to visit both sides of the island - this was a perfect location and really helped us maximize our time. We took a longer day to visit the north shore of the island and Pololu Valley, and split our time between the two sides of the island, including the beaches, waterfalls, volcano, and more. We visited Punalu'u Black Sand Beach a couple of times to watch the waves crash and enjoy the turtles, since it was such a short drive from this location. It's secluded and quiet, yet everything you need is right up the road, including gas and a couple of grocery stores. We hope to return again and would strongly consider staying at this property again. Bob and his wife were helpful both before and during our trip, and everything was very easy and went smoothly.

Owner response: Staci and Thomas, What a kind review! It was a pleasure meeting you and hearing how much you enjoyed "our" island! And thank you for your graciousness in putting up with our family upstairs during your stay. I am sure that the two little ones running around had to get a bit noisy at times. (though we did try to keep things quiet on your behalf...maybe we did OK...) Thanks again for choosing to stay with us. We would welcome you back if you end up on the Big Island in the future! Had an AWESOME experience here! We checked out the Place of Refuge and saw a couple of sea turtles then headed to Kealekekua Bay. rent a kayak and head out to Captain Cook's monument. It's a MUST! On the way there we saw a whole school of dolphins! There had to be at least 15 of them. They are not shy and will swim pretty close to your boat!... Sorry again (Bob) for getting locked out! But thanks for promptly sending your caretaker over. We never had a thing to worry about here!

We've been here 8 days and wish we could stay for 80 more! Sitting on the veranda in the comforting silence - the wind as a pleasant "white noise" - is as soothing to the body and soul as anything my wife and I have ever experienced. The drive to the other climate zones on the island takes you through spectacular scenery and vistas beyond imagination. I know that sounds like hyperbole but I don't know any other way to describe it. We will return to the serenity of lava fields soon!

              Owner info

              Year Purchased: 2009

About the owner: My wife and I live in California and love the sun and the sea. We fell in love with the Big Island during our many vacations to Hawaii, and were fortunate enough to purchase this property for our retirement home. We are avid ballroom dancers and plan on building a dance studio on the property after we move over permanently. We both enjoy arts and crafts and hope to continue and expand our hobbies after we move.

Why the Owner Chose Ocean View:
We love the rural charm of 'Old Hawaii' and serenity of the south end of the island. It is on the 'sunny side' of the island and offers a panoramic view of the ocean 2 miles away. We enjoy watching the whale migration in season from our lanai. We also wanted to be in an area relatively free of the 'vog' that can affect the higher elevations and coastal areas to the north. We enjoy having services and amenities close by to avoid the need for frequent trips in to Kona or Hilo. We love the home and hope you will enjoy it as much as we do!

The Unique Benefits at this Studio:
At 'Hale Li'ili'i Maluhia' you can experience the peace and refreshment of 'getting away from it all' while still 'having it all'. Your vacation can be as active or relaxed as you wish. You can explore the richness of the Big Island or relax with a book on the lanai or by the pool. Kids will enjoy the opportunity to swim and splash about and adults can enjoy a relaxing soak in the spa at the end of the day. It provides a great base for exploring the delights of the east side of the Island without the long drive back to Kona. Make sure you take the opportunity to enjoy the spectacular, star filled night skies and look for shooting stars. The star-gazing is truly world-class!!
