Location: Paris Arrondissement 4, Paris, Ile-de-France (Paris Area), France, Europe (One block from Place des Vosges) View Map

Accommodations:  Apartment, Studio, 1 Bath (Sleeps 2)

The March 2004 renovation was updated in July 2005 and October 2009. This "chambre d'hotel" apartment on the Rue des Tournelles is just a three minute walk from the Place des Vosges, one of the most beautiful 17th century squares in all of Europe. I refer to this 230 square feet ground floor studio apartment as "le petit bijou" or the "little jewel".

The apartment was featured on the Parisian TV magazine show "Paris Premiere" in April 2004. The local TV Company engaged a well-known Parisian designer and produced the making of a luxury "pied a terre". From the demolition of the old, to the haute design of the new, it is an encapsulated history of our Parisian dreams realized.

The renovation is a work of art and features a restored limestone wall, stone tile floors, a very accommodating bathroom, pastel striped painted walls, and the very hip "kitchoo" cuisine with stove, refrigerator, microwave and dishwasher.

All the furnishings have been selected to accommodate your most comfortable visit to Paris. Everything here is comparable to a luxury hotel except at one/quarter of the cost. The 4 star Pavillon de la Reine Hotel three blocks away charges 500 euros/night for a 150 square foot room and it doesn't come with a kitchen.

The apartment, in a 19th century "Regency" style building, sits along the quiet rue des Tournelles. In the 17th century, the Marais was home to the most aristocratic families of Paris and 400 years later, little has changed in the architectural feel of this old quarter.

The very narrow rue des Francs Bourgeoise is now filled with "hip" boutiques, and "trendy" restaurants and cafes share the buildings of the old Jewish Ghetto along rue des Rosiers, but some of the quieter street like rue des Tournelles look the same as they did over a hundred years ago.

It's a short walk to the Notre Dame or the Louvre, but the Marais is so intoxicating, you could easily spend a lot of your time just enjoying the Place des Vosges, Hotel Sully, Museé Picasso, Museé Carnavelet and carefree walks through the small winding streets.

Services included in the cost are phone calls anywhere in France and in the US, cable TV, English movie stations, free and unlimited wireless Internet, linens, towels and the final cleaning. Our bilingual contact will be just a phone call away if you need any help during your stay.

In the apartment will also be our guide to the neighborhood, favorite restaurants, cafes, wine shops, bakeries, and markets.

A Bargain Price for a Marais's Jewel.

Year Purchased: 2005

Why the Owner Chose Paris Arrondissement 4

It is simply the most hip area of Paris, yet full of history, good restaurants and attractive shops. It's centrally located, walking distance to many of Paris' greatest museums and landmarks, and easily accessible by metro. Simply the best area in town.

The Unique Benefits at this Apartment

Designed for American tourists by a French native who has lived in the States for 27 years. I had you in mind. The apartment is very quiet, very comfortable, clean and beautiful. The tub has a regular shower in it (something that you don't always get in Paris). The bed is so comfortable that I bought one for my own place in San Francisco. I've had several renters tell me that it is the best bed they have ever slept in. Moon, my Paris contact is the best!

I was born in France and I have lived in San Francisco now for 27 years. I live with my boyfriend in the Castro area of the City. I have an 18 year old son who just moved to New York City to go to French Culinary Institute. I am very lucky to have two places in Paris, this wonderful studio and a beautiful one bedroom (VRBO 33626).It has been a pleasure hosting so many nice guests through out the last few years. I am looking forward to have you too! :)

    • I was in charge of finding my daughter a place to stay in Paris, for 12 nights, on her recent R&R from her Doctors Without Borders assignment in the Central African Republic. Now, her accomodations in CAR are more than a little primitive, so it wouldn't have taken much to please her, but she was over-the-top excited when she arrived at Joelle's apartment for her stay. First of all, let me say that Joelle was a dream to work with. I needed to send a package to the apartment for my daughter to have upon her arrival and Joelle arranged for that. My daughter needed to arrive early and leave late from the apartment, because of her flight times. Joelle arranged for that. She was absolutley MORE than accomodating and I'd be sure to recommend her apartment to anyone looking for a place to stay in Paris. Now, as for the apartment. My daughter's largest need while in Paris was for rest and she said that the bed in this apartment was absolutley the most comfortable she'd ever in her life, laid her head down upon. She loved the towel warmer in the bathroom. She loved having plentiful hot water. And, she loved, loved, loved the location so near the Place des Vosges, where she would go and read for the day. I loved the free international calling, that allowed my daughter to talk with us regularly while in the apartment. I cannot recommend this apartment enough. I can't imagine anyone not being totally happy with it. Thanks again, Joelle!!

    • On a recent trip to France (May 2009) I stayed for a week at Joelle's "Le Petite Bijou" apartment in the Marais, in the 4th Arondissement of Paris. Overall, I was very pleased with my stay. The location is excellent, just a block from Place des Vosges, "the most beautiful square in Paris", and a few blocks from all the action in the vicinity of Place de la Bastille, incl. twice weekly street markets. Be sure to get a baguette from the little bakery just a half block north up the street! The apartment was remarkably quiet despite its location right on the street. The loudest noises were from the floor above, not from outside, and those weren't a problem. Security also seemed to be fine, and the neighborhood safe. The apartment is exactly as pictured, although the decoration is slowing a little wear and tear around the edges (not a significant problem and scheduled to be freshened soon). The bed, bed area, bathroom, and linens are all especially nice (I loved that red wall!). On the other hand, you should be warned that the kitchen area is very small (as is quite common in Paris studio apartments). At the time of my visit, only wired Internet was available (which was fine, it was fast and secure) although the equipment in the apartment was wifi- capable. By the time you read this I am told the wi- fi should be enabled in case you need it. The apartment was cool while I was there, but I purchased a fan anyway which should be available for future visitors as well. While the apartment was very nice, Moon, the English speaking local contact, was even nicer. In addition to taking care of my other requests promptly and graciously, she saved me when I locked myself out of the apartment (just don't grab the wrong key when you leave)! She is the real jewel! In all, I recommend Joelle's Petite Bijou very highly. PS: Joelle is very nice too :-)

    • We highly recommend Le Bijou- superb location, clean, well-equipped and filled with helpful information to help one navigate Paris and The Marais. Like many others have commented, you "feel like a local." Coming back to the apartment after a long, busy, crowded day of sightseeing felt great. Wonderful restaurants in the neighborhood also.

    • I am a student living abroad in Paris and chose Joelle's apartment mostly because of its wonderful location, virtually next to Place des Vosges and the very convenient Bastille. I truly was thrilled with the apartment itself and was sad to leave it! It is charming and romantic as well as being in a wonderful building and a safe, exciting area. I would recommend it to anyone visiting Paris!

    • Joelle's little "jewel" is just that. The small studio is set up for efficiency and comfort. We were thrilled to be able to stay in a neighborhood that was less touristy, with lots of art studios and boutiques. And after 2 weeks in Italy we really loved the laundromat a half-block away that was very clean, safe and easy to use. Ate at some fabuous recommended neigborhood restaurants and walked only 20 minutes for the best chocolate in Paris! And of course the day always started with a croissant or pastry at the boulangerie at the corner. The most beautiful square in Europe, the Place de Voges is only a block or two away!

    • The Bijou is a real gem! The building is a beautiful part of Paris, with the historical Place des Vosges and Picasso Museum close by. And yet, Joelle’s studio has all the modern conveniences one could want. We especially appreciated the helpful apartment book. We explored many of the cafes and restaurants Joelle suggested. We enjoyed them all, especially the Spanish restaurant down the street. The apartment is close to the Metro, which also was very convenient. If we visit Paris again, we would definitely consider staying at the Bijou again!
