Waterfront on Coombs Cove, East Islesboro

Overlooking Hutchins Island, this property offers ever changing, always gorgeous views. Watch the colors of dawn wash over Castine, Cape Rosier, and the east Penobscot Bay. Let the last sight of your evening be moonlight playing on water, and then drift off to sleep hearing loons call across the cove. Enjoy the tranquility and privacy of a house at the end of a quiet, island lane. Listen to the seals grunting on the ledges off Hutchins Island, an uninhabited island protected by the Islesboro Islands Trust. Connected to Islesboro by a sand bar at low tide, this little island’s beaches and rocky shore are fun to explore. Adjacent to the property, a family of beavers is at work in the early morning and at dusk. Approach their pond quietly and you may also be able to watch the blue heron that feeds in the shallows.
The house is about thirty years old and comfortable. It has two bedrooms looking over the cove and a small bedroom with no water view. The living room has comfortable chairs and a sofa. A dining area is off the living room. Upstairs, besides the master bedroom with a queen bed, is a sitting room with an analog tv that can play videos and dvds. There are no computers and no phones. Many people are grateful, but others find they can’t live without them, so be forewarned.
Islesboro is a 20 minute ferry ride from the terminal at Lincolnville Beach. The ferry departs from the mainland on the hour beginning at 8am. The last boat leaves at 5pm and there is no ferry at 12:00. There are fewer boat runs on Sundays. I recommend making reservations as the ferry is likely to be busy in the summer.
Both small grocery stores on the island serve pizza and sandwiches. While there are no formal restaurants, at the ferry landing you can get burgers, fries and other light fare. There's a sandwich shop in Dark Harbor as well, and a cafe in the Community Center in Dark Harbor. We have a library, and the Community Center plans various activities. There is no movie theater. There are two antique shops.
Pendleton Point on the southern end of the island boasts small beaches, hiking on the rocky shore and great views of the East Bay and many of its islands. Islesboro Islands Trust maintains hiking trails in several locations. Big Tree Beach is a popular spot for swimming. There's a lot to do on Islesboro if you're in the mood for activity. It's also a good place to do little more than relax.

This is a wonderful place. All prior reviews are on spot. The owner, Michael, IS fantastic, and makes your arrival, and stay, delightful. The house is beautiful. The accomodations are top notch. High end appliances make the stay on the island feel luxurious. Nice towels, linens, and everything you might need on your stay. The photos do not do it justice. The furnishings are lovely, and very comfy. Perfect all around. What makes this "spot" priceless is the sheer, utter calm, quiet and privacy. (And the air.) The sunrises make you wake from a deep sleep to enjoy. Our children, 9 & 14 survived without WiFi (although there is WiFi at the Library, inside and out), as there were so many other things to explore...Hutchins Island, the beaver pond, as well as so many other places on the island. We live in So.Coastal Maine, and have vacationed on Islesboro for many years. This is by far, the most wonderful spot on the island. I Could not give this property a higher rating.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with teenagers.

This was a perfect place to stay on Islesboro; the house is comfortable, clean, well-stocked, and perfectly located overlooking Hutchins Island. On the beach just yards away, we gathered mussels and dug clams for dinner. We hiked just about all of the paths maintained by the Island Land Trust and (including the paths that begin just down the road from the house). We did wish that we had access to kayaks on island, as the location is perfect. While formal activities are VERY limited, we did enjoy the book signing at the local bookshop on a rainy afternoon, and the two concerts we attended on Sat. and Thursday nights at the up island church. The island's beauty is unsurpassed.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 0/0

My husband, young son and I recently had the opportunity to spend a week at Coombs Cove in Islesboro. The home was perfect and the owner really thought of everything that we would need for a pleasurable stay. Prior to our trip, Michael was extremely helpful with answering all of our questions and helping us prepare (we flew part of the way, so had to provision on the drive from the airport). The house is spotless and the appliances are all brand new. The location was beautiful. I woke to watch the sunrise over Hutchins Island several mornings and the view was spectacular. The property is quite secluded and quiet and is a short walk to Hutchins Island at low tide, and the Beaver Pond trail. The lawn by the water's edge was perfect and large enough for our nightly baseball games. The island itself was great - very friendly people throughout. We hiked and explored every day. Turtlehead, Beaver Pond, Hutchins, Herberts Preserve, and the Narrows were all good and slightly different hikes. The trails on the island are well kept and well marked with blazes. I still can't get over the sweet smell of the pines at Turtlehead - just gorgeous. Although we beach-hopped throughout the week, our favorite spot to relax and enjoy the water and the views was Sprague beach at the northern end. Overall, a great vacation and a great property.Recommended for: Families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.

Our family was reunited in Islesboro, from Maine to Texas and we really made so many memories that will fill our hearts forever. No words could really prepare us for the week we were about to experience. We couldn' t believe how calm and quiet the ocean could be right outside our windows. The sky was always changing with color and energy. We tried to see everything and experience everything from the sandbars to the rugged walks around Hutchins Island, to the Beaver Pond, which at dusk seemed to have the most activity, and they were quite something to watch. You must try the trail that goes around the pond. I did not see ONE misquito which was quite enjoyable to be able to see what the woods unfolded without getting chewed. We didn't realize how wonderful the beachfront was right in front of the house for a couple days. It extends to the sandbar and Huchins Island. It seemed that the acreage went on to eternity but yet hardly anyone to bother you.Loved that! Seemed like it was all to ourselves to enjoy and watch the quiet of sailboats. Michael the owner is wonderful and we hoped to come back as soon as we can! Felt like home away from home and I surprisingly choked up when it was time to leave. This was such a gift to be able to stay here in this Magical Place forever seared in our memory:)Recommended for: Sightseeing, people with disabilities, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

We hesitate to tell you all just how wonderful and special a spot you have found -- we'd love to keep this all for ourselves! We've always loved the calm and quiet of Islesboro, but there are no longer inns operating and there is no camping on the island. We were lucky enough to know the owner and spent our anniversary there last year. Absolutely beautiful, secluded, oceanfront spot -- the house is nice as well, but we found ourselves spending as much time as possible in chairs under the apple tree (bring your own outdoor loungers) and walking on the beach. Plenty of room in the house, modern bathrooms, comfortable beds and plenty of space for entertaining -- it would be great to be there with a few friends. The homeowner is delightful, easy to chat with and he has a large library of very interesting titles at the house. Bring your own kayaks, visit the marsh and watch the beavers swim...listen to the call of the loons and watch ospreys and eagles fish. Do as much walking, biking, hiking and kayaking as you want, but be sure to spend time just drinking in the chi of the place. This is a very special place.Recommended for: Girls getaway, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+.

I stayed at this beautiful house with my daughter in mid-June. The house is lovely -- comfortable, tasteful and very well maintained. I spent one rainy morning sitting in a comfy chair reading in front of the enormous picture window looking out at the water. Most days I spent outside, on the waterfront, walking the island, visiting the beach or sitting on the little deck with my book. We found the island peaceful and just to our liking. The house is very friendly -- with an easy, workable kitchen and pleasant, spacious rooms. The owner's description is very accurate and we found him to be quite helpful with anything we needed. I'd recommend this property to anyone looking for a completely comfortable, peaceful getaway on the water.Recommended for: Girls getaway, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
While there are many places to enjoy on Islesboro, such as Sprague's Beach to the west, and the hiking trails at the extreme north and south ends of this narrow island, my favorite is this tidal cove which I was lucky enough to find more than fifteen years ago. It’s a tranquil location at the end of a dead-end lane. There is no phone or TV connected to the outside world. It’s a short walk to the beaver pond. The start of a loop hiking trail is adjacent to my property. If there’s a need, there is cell phone reception, and the drive to the library, where there is wireless internet 24 hours a day, takes less than ten minutes. In the fog, the only sounds those of the birds and waves, it is easy to imagine how life was before the onslaught of machines.
