"We chose this house based on its location and amazing views and were not disappointed. It is a wonderful choice for anyone who is looking to experience Hawaii away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist area. The views from the lanai are incredible!
We spent 90% of the time we were at the house out on the lanai and enjoyed every meal outside. In the evening we enjoyed drinks and gorgeous sunsets. We just missed the whale season, but were able to view many dolphins, manta ray and sea turtles. (We brought a travel set of binoculars with us and were very glad we did.) There are also many wild goats and poultry roaming the area. There is a local fisherman in the area who goes out every morning and returns with his catch later in the day. If you are lucky, he puts a sign up out on the street and you can buy fresh Ono or Ahi to grill on the lanai. There are also several fresh fruit markets located nearby that you can drive by and get locally grown fruits and vegetables. We enjoyed several great meals at the small local restaurants like Big Jake’s Island BBQ and Keoki’s Roadside Café.
The pebble beach located by the house was fairly quiet and we had it mostly to ourselves. Water shoes that are enclosed and have a good sole are recommended, as the lava stone pebbles can be difficult to walk on. There is also an interesting hiking trail located along the beach line. It is a historic trail that the locals help maintain and has many interesting points to view (take along some water). We appreciated making use of the coolers that the owner provided, as we were able to take along food and cold beverages wherever we went on our day-trips. The kitchen was fairly well appointed and had most of the items we needed. There are a few stores in the area (Steve, the owner, provided a list and we also discovered other small local places) to pick up extra things we needed. There is a great Costco in Kona.
The house is about a 30 minute drive from Kona, but we found it worth the few extra miles of travel to escape the tourist crowds and it was central to most of the activities we wanted to participate in. We day-tripped out to Volcano National Park, Akaka Falls State Park and many other great areas on the island. The house is attractive and functional and there is a spectacular view of the ocean and coastline from the second queen bedroom. Steve is responsive and professional to deal with. We would definitely stay here again."

"Four adults stayed for 4 nights and enjoyed our time out of the hustle and bustle of the tourist areas. The kitchen is well set up - we cooked in one night and found everything we needed for meal prep. Early morning strolls through the coffee farm, feeding the chooks, reading on the veranda and the lawn, and the outdoor shower (yes, there's one inside too) were highlights. Steve has guide books and maps and left some of his excellent coffee for us to enjoy."

"Max's rental is conveniently located to many good beaches, restaurants, and garden and coffee tours. Kailua-Kona is only around 40 minutes down the road, so if you get the urge to be around lots more people, more beaches, shopping, restaurants with music, it's not too far away. The volcano is close enough to stay for a few hours and still get back before the sun goes down. The house is adequate, it even comes with it's own geckos. You will need to buy drinking water, so stop by one of the stores on the way. Max will supply you with great coffee from his own farm. Max makes himself available if you need any help, otherwise he will leave you on your own. Be prepared for his driveway. You don't need 4 wheel drive, but it is very rough. Our small rental car made it ok, but it takes some maneuvering. Great view of this part of the coast from the balcony."

"Kathy Carr is a delightful host and has built a wonderful little "tropical hideaway" here at Captain Cook on the Kona side of the Big Island. Perfect for one or a couple who wants to avoid the touristy feeling of Kailua and get a sense of what living on the Big Island is all about, especially if you can stay for a few days and explore. Charming studio with queen size bed, outdoor shower, kitchen and suitable toys for snorkeling, boogie boarding, etc. Fresh fruit from the property and a nice hot tub. Great location - 20-30 mins from Kailua and about 45 from South Point with plenty in between. If you are a Four Seasons kind of traveller, then move on, but if you like to immerse yourself in a real island experience in a lovely, very comfortable open air vacation rental, then I recommend the Tropical Hideway wholeheartedly."
