About Woody Pool

Joan and I live in Kansas City, Mo. Joan is an Registered Nurse and I am a retired Police Detective. Between our travels to St. John and our 5 grandkids, we stay pretty busy.

Woody Pool purchased this villa in 2006

Why Woody Pool chose Coral Bay

While on a cruise to St. Thomas in 1997, we took a day sail and the captain recommended we try St. John. The next year we took his advise and went to St. John our first time. We feel in love with the island and traveled back many times before we bought the lot that Blue Palm Villa sits on in 2000. In December 2004, we started the building process, completing it in December 2006.

What makes this villa unique

We stayed at many villas during our travels to St. John and during the building process. We took notes of the things that we liked most about each villa. We wanted great views, easy access, beautiful landscapping with lots of palm trees. We wanted the villa to look like a home, not a rental property. We kept these thouhgts in mind when we began the building process. Our villa is in Upper Carolina and there is easy access. We have breath taking views of the sailboats in Coral Bay Harbor as well as panoramic views of the Bordeaux Mountain range and valley. Our furnishings are island themed, with many items coming from various islands that we have traveled to. Our staff has been with us since we began renting in 2006. They take very good care of the villa as well as making sure that the villa is ready for each guest.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We stayed here for 6 nights and enjoyed our stay immensely. The view from the villa is absolutely amazing and breathtaking! Waking up and looking at the beautiful Coral Bay will stay in my memory forever. The location was perfect - we were close to North beaches, Salt Pond area, and East End (each area around 10-20 min from villa). The property was well maintained with all amenities. The house is well built with two separate living quarters. One bedroom is near the spacious kitchen, and the the other two are on the other side of the pool. We only used the pool in the evening after coming home from the beach - but it was still good. The property had gas grill along with the charcoal (we only used gas), it has air conditioning in each room. However, we got to use it rarely as it was quite cool at night, and some nights were very rainy. One word of advice - please rent a jeep as some roads are quite steep, and after the rain, the roads were slippery. The owners, Woody and Joan, were extremely helpful with timely responses, and it was easy to communicate with them. When we had a little trouble with the WiFi when we arrived, Woody personally called the house and made sure that we connected. Coming back home and seeing the blue shutters of the Blue Palm from the Centerline road was such a welcoming sign. We fell in love with this beautiful island and Blue Palm Villa - a choice you won't regret!

FIVE WEEKS IN PARADISE

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a 5 week stay, our 21st Caribbean Island, our 4th VBRO. This trip ranks at the top of our list of favorites.

Others have done so well describing the Villa; let me touch on some other things that might prove valuable.

The Blue Palm in Coral Bay is a perfect location; far enough from busy Cruz Bay but an easy drive to all of the beaches. The owners were a pleasure to deal with. Just the mention of a minor issue resulted in a maintenance man the next day. From our experience, the Villa is a good value. If staying more than a week, be sure and consider Woody’s suggestions for cost savings. The option of adding on bedrooms on an as needed basis was great.

The island is fantastic, a little busier than some we’ve visited but not overly so. If you like beaches, this is for you. They don’t get any better. There is also a good selection of snorkeling options. Do buy the book “St. John Off the Beaten Track by G. Singer” in advance of your trip. It’s a wealth of information. Get going by 9:30 AM or opt for a later start at 2:30 PM when some beach visitors are leaving. Parking and the selection of a beach spot requires some planning. Go on line and check the Cruise ship days and the swell (surf) report. Avoid the north shore beaches on Cruise Day, although Francis is a less visited option. If the swell is high, pick another day for Trunk or Cinnamon Bay. Do take the time to explore one or two of the plantation ruins. It will give you a real sense of the Island history.

The small grocery stores in Coral Bay have a good selection of what you will find on Mainland US. Prices are high but then, everything made a long voyage!

Coral Bay has a few nice restaurants, no need to go all the way to Cruz with impossible parking. The Aqua Bistro was a great place for dinner. There are nightly specials like All You Can Eat Lobster and Prime Rib Night. We had four dinners, all were excellent. Pickles isn’t fancy but has a good breakfast, serves great coffee and has fresh cold cuts and salads. At Indigo, dishes were a bit spicy for our liking but that’s personal. The made to order pizza was very good. Miss Lucy’s offered a nice lunch right on the water’s edge. Past the Love City Grocery store is a garden/landscaping center, ask for their fresh greens and vegetables. They supply many of the Island restaurants.

Yesterday was the first day of Spring but we have foot of snow yet to melt. Five weeks was obviously not long enough.

Owner's Response: Larry, Thank you for your review. It was a pleasure to have you at our home. After communicating with you, I knew it was in good hands! Your suggestions for the beaches are spot on. I also concur with you on the restaurants in Coral Bay and the ease of parking as compared to Cruz Bay. Please consider Blue Palm Villa again on your next visit to St. John. Woody and Joan

Clean, Spacious, Great View

  • 5 of 5

Blue Palm Villa is one of the cleanest and best maintained villas we have stayed at in 8 trips to St John.

The layout was perfect for our extended family visit. My parents took the master in the main house while my husband and I took the upstairs bedroom and the kids took the lower bedroom. The upstairs bedroom was perfect for us and gave us plenty of privacy. I love that it has a kitchen. All the bedrooms are very spacious even with king size beds. We had everything we needed in the kitchen for preparing meals. I especially love the blue tooth stereo system with indoor and outdoor speakers. And of course we enjoyed the pool and the sundeck.

The owners were very responsive and helpful with all my questions before and after arrival. We had a nasty thunderstorm one night that knocked out the cable box and TV in the main house, power to the lower bedroom (but not the A/C and bath), wifi, and all phone service. Erickson came out as soon as we could get in touch with him to fix things and Woody also followed up with us. Everyone we dealt with in renting and staying at Blue Palm Villa was very professional.

Fabulous!

  • 5 of 5

I went with my husband, my daughter and niece and nephews (7 of us in total) all from ages 18-23. My husband and I had our own section of the house with a kitchen, full bath and beautiful view. There was more than enough room for all of us. The pictures do not do justice for the house. The views were absolutely amazing and the pool looked over the entire island. Having a pool was the perfect addition for days we didn't want to go to the beach, though the beaches were easy to get to and close to the villa. The house was fully stocked with ANYTHING you would need. We had an issue with our rental car when we arrived and the liaison of the house, Loren, got us an 8 passenger vehicle right away. She was wonderful to work with. They also came in halfway during the week to clean the pool. I would recommend this home anywhere from a party of 2 to a party of 8.

Great time at Blue Palm Villa end of February/early March. The home is well laid out, with two units separate from the main house ideal for three couples. All units are well stocked and maintained. We had an issue with a cycle on the clothes washer and Erickson, responsible for maintenance issues, responded immediately. The views from the villa are great, and its location makes for easy access to both Coral Bay and to Mayo and the other beaches in that area. The owners, the Pools, were great to work with; they even arranged to return a shaving kit I left there. Recommend Blue Palm Villa most highly.

Incredible Villa and Owners

  • 5 of 5

My extended family of 7 and I vacationed at the beautiful Blue Palm Villa from 1/17-1/25. To say that the view is breathtaking would be an understatement. The pictures truly don't do this villa justice. The accommodations were fantastic. The kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need, making it easy to prepare meals to be shared on the deck with views that are second to none.

We were traveling with a 3 year old which I was a bit nervous about but the property was very safe.

The rooms are very spacious. Although you are on the same property, the separation of each room allows for ample privacy and comfort.

The pool was very clean and refreshing after a day spent in the sun!

There are multiple beaches (maho and salt pond were our favorite) and restaurants (aqua bistro, indigo grill, skinny legs) within convenient driving distance from the villa.

Loren, the greeter, was very communicative and helpful and lead us to the villa on the first day, making navigating the island much easier.

I can honestly say that Joan and Woody (the owners of the villa) were one of the best aspects of our trip. On the second to last day of our trip, we received a call from American Airlines that our flight home had been cancelled due to a blizzard that crippled the entire east coast. We were left with no way home and no where to stay for a night. I spoke with Woody and he confirmed that he and Joan would be arriving at the villa on our day of departure but that we were welcome to stay in the other two rooms until we could find a way home. Their understanding and generosity is not something you come across very often and we are eternally grateful for their kindness.

Thank you Joan and Woody, for a vacation filled with memories that will last a lifetime!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your review of our villa. Your comments reinforce to Joan and I what we are trying to accomplish with our villa. We are also so grateful that you informed us of your situation with the terrible snow storm that had hit the east coast resulting in your flights being cancelled and that we were in a position that we could help eliminate some stress related to your travels. It was also a pleasure to meet you and your family.

Amazing location

  • 5 of 5

The view from the house is spectacular. We were a family of 5 and the layout of the house worked perfectly. The house has everything you need and is a short distance to the beaches and restaurants in Coral Bay and not too far from Cruz Bay. Loren the liaison was accessible and very helpful. Truly a memorable trip ! Did I mention the view ? from the house, from the pool...miss it :)
