About Mrs Gibson (email or mobile) or Mrs Cleary (phone)
I bought this house during a wet week one summer in Ireland soon after I returned to England from working abroad for 4 years. I currently live with my husband in London, where I grew up. I retired 11 years ago from the Financial Services industry and recently completed a B.A. in History.
Mrs Gibson (email or mobile) or Mrs Cleary (phone) purchased this Cottage in 1989
Why Mrs Gibson (email or mobile) or Mrs Cleary (phone) chose Castletownshend
I started coming to my grandmother's house in the country area around Castletownshend when I was 8 years old, and have visited almost every year since. Since buying the Phoenix my husband and I come several times a year, often bringing friends and family.
What makes this Cottage unique
We love the unique character of Castletownshend, its history, the village community, friendly neighbours, a shop two doors away, great pubs, café/tea shop in the Castle on the quay, and excellent restaurant; and a 2 minute walk to 3 beaches or quays in the village. We do a lot of walking in the area, just following paths on the O.S. maps or using walking guides from the local Tourist Office.

The house ticked all boxes for our weekend break. Location perfect for visiting beautiful surrounding area. The local shop and two pubs in the village were delightful and everyone very friendly and helpful.
Great cottage in a beautiful peaceful and friendly location , clean and spacious with all modern facilities needed for a comfortable stay. Highly recommend for a stay in West Cork
Wonderful find - holiday heaven
The Pheonix is fabulous - we found it clean and well equipped. Next door to the shop, near pubs - a central location to explore the village and coast. It's really spacious with a lovely bright and airy feel to it.
Fabulous for cooking and dining as the kitchen is so well kitted out. We really utilised all the space - big cooking and dining, then evenings spent in the lounge area for music, reading or games.
The patio off the dining area opens onto a big secluded patio and beyond a raised lawned garden. We used the garden most days and enjoyed some great BBQs.
The reception room has tons of space for coats, boots, washing and drying, we had children with us, and had plenty of room to spread out!
Our boys played and read in their bedrooms while we made dinner. Lovely fresh rooms, simply decorated, with the Comfiest of beds - I loved having an ensuite off the main bedroom.
We founds loads of local walks, loved Skibereen - (the nearest town) with good pubs, shops, cafes, etc. Lots of local live music and things to see and do.
This house will be really cosy in Autumn or Winter, l can just picture lighting the fire and nestling down in the lounge after a long walk for a cosy evening in.
Mmmmmm I wonder if The Pheonix is free for Christmas? I Can't wait to visit again - I could move in and stay forever
Thank you for the glowing review. Yes it I free for Christmas ( and New Year) in 2013 as we cannot be there this year, which is a shame for us.
Holiday in Castletownshend
We stayed for four nights and couldn't have asked for a more pleasant weekend. The location was fabulous for a nice break away from the hustle bustle of city life. The local pub (Mary Ann's) is a five minute walk away and they serve the best meals (fresh local seafood). The other pub (Lil Mccarthy's) is only two minutes. The locals are so friendly.
We went for a walk to several beaches and there is an abundance of sightseeing drives all along the coast including boat rides to the islands.
The town of Skibereen is only 8km away with several shops and eating establishments.
The accommodations were clean, comfortable, and all the amenities of
home. I definitely give this one of my best holiday destinations and would go back and recommend it to friends and family.
A most wonderful home in Castletowsend
I have had the privilege of staying in this fantastic house over the past 20 years. It is a much loved and cared for second home, which reflects in the excellent standard of furnishing and fittings. Cosy central heating and the open fire enhance the warm reception the house has, whatever the season. The open plan living area lends itself admirably to the many long dinner parties, or the inevitably lazy morning breakfasts.
Ideally situated in one of the most beautiful villages in Ireland, it is a short(hill) walk to the wonderful bar and restaurant called Mary Anne's, run by the legend that is Fergus!
The coastline is absolutely stunning and the oft refreshing breeze blowing away the cobwebs and lifting the soul.
A jewel in the crown of SW Cork.
Wow - that's a great review and sums up the house and area perfectly. Thank you.
I can strongly recommend a holiday staying at this lovely welcoming property in Castletownsend. Situated conveniently for local facilities, two great pubs, the quay and the castle. A confortable, modern and yet character - filled property, you will enjoy your time here. Well stocked kitchen, two bathrooms and a large dining/living area, the Phoenix is the ideal place to stay for a holiday in County Cork. Local inhabitants are friendly and helpful.
The 52 mile drive from Cork ferry or airport takes approximately one and half hours on the main N71 road. The drive passes through beautiful countryside and lovely Irish towns and villages, such as Clonakilty and Rosscarbery. A longer drive can be taken along the coast visiting Kinsale and beautiful Irish seaside bays and inlets such as Glandore.
Castletownshend is the most Anglo Irish village in Ireland with the best sheltered harbour in West Cork. It's origins date back to the 17th century so fine Georgian houses are mixed with stone cottages. It has retained a village atmosphere with a shop and two pubs, one of which serves excellent meals. There is a public tennis court and children's playground within a 3 minute walk from the Phoenix. There are three separate quays within a 5 minute walk, all with beach access to the sea. Larger sandy beaches are 2 miles away.
Castletownshend, including the Phoenix, is now on Google StreetView.
