Overview

About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 11)

Welcome to our beachfront home, the Bluewater Star. Our 4 bedroom, 3.5 bath home sits in the dunes on a half-acre lot only footsteps away from the beach. Decks surround three sides of the house and each bedroom opens up to a deck, giving everyone lots of elbow room and plenty of ocean views. A private walkway leads you from the back deck straight over the dunes to the beach.

The kitchen, bar and living room is the focal point of our home. A soaring ceiling and two-story wall of windows gives you views of the ocean from anywhere in the house.

The owner of the house is a restaurant manager who loves to cook and he knows that to entertain properly one must have a great kitchen. Restaurant quality cookware, bar ware, utensils and beautiful platters, bowls and tableware make meal preparation and entertaining wonderfully easy and best of all fun.

Two of the four bedrooms are masters, each with a king bed, private bathroom and crib. One of the masters is on the main floor and the other master (along with the other two bedrooms) are upstairs. The third bedroom has 2 queen beds and the fourth bedroom has two sets of bunkbeds. The bottom bunk on one side is a double. These last two bedrooms share share a bathroom. Another half bath is located on the main floor next to to the laundry room.

Across the street is a pier for crabbing, and fishing is everywhere. You can fish in the surf, in the bay, off a pier or deep sea with a charter boat. If you want someone else to catch your fish, just run over to the nearby seafood market for the catch of the day. If you don't feel like cooking, there are several wonderful one-of-a kind restaurants nearby.

Galveston, with its historic homes and local entertainment, is an easy and scenic 1/2-hour drive up the coast.

Even though summer is the most popular time of the year, the off season is a great time of year to come to the beach too. Beaches are empty, lodging is less expensive and days are typically sunny and warm enough that you can still dip your toes in the ocean. Nights may have a bit of chill in the air which is fun for bonfires on the beach. December is the time for family get-togethers and holiday celebrations and we like to celebrate too with a Christmas tree and festive holiday touches.

January and February are really the only months that are cold but even so, it's cozy inside where you can enjoy the view of the ocean from the comfort of the sofa next to a real fireplace. Relax and unwind with a good book and retreat from the world. Or bundle up and take a solitary walk on the beach where the only sounds are the waves and seagulls. Take a jog, explore the beach and work up an appetite so that when you get back you'll be ready to browse our cookbooks and teach yourself how to make hearty dishes like cioppino, paella, stews, chilis and chowders. Recipes that take more time and patience than you usually have provide a very pleasant way to reconnect with family and friends.

Weekly rentals are 7 nights and are available year round. During the summer we only offer full week stays that go from Friday to Friday but off-season, we offer shorter stays with 3 nights being the minimum. Holidays are only offered for a full weeks stay and there is an extra charge for those stays. Prices on this site are strictly for family rental.

Weekend stays are from Thursday to Sunday or Friday to Monday. Check in is at 4 pm and checkout is 11 am. These times are sometimes flexible, depending on whether the house is rented before and after you. During peak season, weekend rentals will only be available as last minute bookings.

Well-behaved, short-haired dogs 40-lbs and under are accepted conditionally with prior approval and payment of $125 non-refundable fee per pet, two pets max. No puppies under a year of age please.

About Barbara Haney

In 2006, my husband and I were nearing completion of construction on our beach home when we discovered that our beautiful baby boy, by then almost two, was autistic. Our savings and extra income intended for the beach house mortgage vaporized as we began intensive therapies for our little one. We had decided to put the house up for sale when we stumbled across the vrbo website and an idea was born. What if we could open up our home to other families who enjoy the beach as much as we do? So, overnight my husband and I became managers of our beachhome-turned-resort rental property. And what a fantastic experience getting to know so many really terrific families. We've really enjoyed having the privilege to provide a place for other families to create their own memories while allowing us to create our own beach memories too.

Bobby, now 12, is doing great. All these years of therapy have given us a child who can interact and talk and he can now tell us that his favorite place on this earth is our beach house. We give a heartfelt thanks to all the families who have stayed at our home and extend a warm Texas hello to all the families we have yet to meet. Cheers! Why Barbara Haney chose Gulf Coast

Going to Surfside is like stepping back in time. There's only one road into town and one road out and not a single skyscraper or hotel chain. Restaurants are family owned and convenience stores close down in the off season.

And it's been that way since I was a child coming here with my parents who would rent a beach house in Surfside for one fun-filled fantastic week every summer. Family from out of town would join us and we'd spend our days fishing, crabbing, swimming and eating delicious things. It instilled a life-long desire to carry on the tradition with my children. When we go down to the house, we invite all our loved ones to join us. Our caravan of cars pulls into the driveway and everyone scatters in different directions - little ones with their mamas scoot off to the beach with shovels and pails, the older kids go crabbing or swimming, dads go fishing and those who just want to relax head off to the deck with a book for a little relaxation. Hours later everyone congregates around the dinner table to tackle platters of fresh fried fish, steamed Gulf Coast crabs and chilled shrimp. Evenings are spent on the deck, listening to the surf and watching the night sky for shooting stars while fire flies blink in the dunes and the moonlight reflects off the water. At some point before bed, we'll rouse ourselves and head down to the beach, lanterns in hand, to build a bonfire in the dark. The kids love to toast marshmallows for sandy smores and once they've had their fill, we all head back to the house exhausted and happy and ready to do it all again the next day.

What makes this house unique

We understand that when you rent a beach house you are planning on spending most of your time either enjoying the waves or enjoying the home and we have done everything we can to make this the most comfortable and well stocked beach house you have ever been in bar none. A comment I hear frequently from my guests is that they are so happy to see such a wonderfully stocked kitchen. My husband and I are life-long foodies and our background is the hospitality industry. We met working at a restaurant in college, and we love to cook. The last thing we want to do when we're getting ready to come to the beach house is pack every single thing we need to cook a good meal, so it's imperative that our kitchen have everything that we might need. We think that you will like this too.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Your home was a wonderful place to "come in from the cold" both physically and mentally. The decorating was pleasant and comfortable. The view is so inspiring and calming. While not made by you, the design of your windows framed the view perfectly. The thoughtful and very considerate amenities are the best we have found in numerous other rentals.

We look forward to future stays. It was a pleasure to stay in your home and Taylor's 16th birthday will be a most wonderful memory. - Mark and Debbie Krall

What a great relaxing getaway!

  • 5 of 5

I can not possibly be more thrilled with our stay. We found the house perfectly accommodating with all the right touches of home. Our family of 7 had plenty of room to stretch out and relax. We honesty couldn't think of a single item that wasn't already stocked within the house. Did I mention right on the beach? Just a short walk down the beautiful wooded deck complete with a great gazebo for catching a little shade during the day and great views of the water in the evenings. When the sun got to be too much for our 10 month old we simply walked him back to the beach house where we could still watch the older kids enjoy the water and sand without having to rustle everybody back into the truck. The owner was incredibly accommodating and always a phone call away, you can really tell she is fully vested in your family having the best possible getaway. My girls spent the majority of their beach time surfing on the provided body boards, and had a blast playing in the waves. It was such a relaxing and trouble free experience that we will definitely be back soon!

Week long relaxation!

  • 5 of 5

This house is just perfect--Just a short walk to beach. No need to bring coolers--easy stroll back to house. Beds very comfortable--A great view every morning and every evening with the moonlight reflecting on the ocean. Nice place for children or three separate couples. Fantastic kitchen! Netflix! So clean, tastefully decorated, and maintained. AC works great! (Texas heat can be daunting) I really could not praise it enough. Barbara the owner is so sweet and competent--a true joy with whom to work.

It was a beautiful beach house. Very clean and comfortable. Loved stepping out right on the beach.

  • 5 of 5

The owners made it very easy for us to find the house with great directions and many insights to what there was to expect. We felt right at home. The walkway that leads from the house right to the beach was amazing. Our most favorite part was waking up to the beautiful sunrises every morning. We will definitely be staying here again. Loved it.

Wonderful spot for a family gathering

  • 5 of 5

There is not much to add to the great reviews the house already has, but I wanted to add my very positive thoughts. The home is spacious, comfortable, clean, and well-equipped. The views are wonderful. There is a 'nook' bedroom for a child under the stairs which my son LOVED (you can see it in the photos).

The BEST part of the home, aside from the fantastic kitchen which others have described, is the 'pergola' which is a covered seating area near the end of the walkway to the beach - big enough for 6 or 8 people. In the late afternoons, it was quite shady and a great way to enjoy the views and (strong) ocean breeze without having to get sandy all over again!!! It was a huge hit with our family - there is even sound out there so just hook up your iPhone inside and listen to your music out there. It is also lit if you want to sit out there at night. So pleasant!

The (minor) negatives: the home is showing some wear and tear, but that is to be expected in a busy rental home and in no way detracts from your experience. We were surprised when we arrived (for a holiday weekend) and the beach in front of the home was stuffed to the gills with cars and people! However, that was only for the weekend and it was practically deserted the rest of the time. So just be prepared for that if you are coming during a busy time.

I would not hesitate to recommend this home. The owner was very nice and helpful throughout the process. We will definitely rent it again.

Owner's Response: So glad you all enjoyed your stay Rachel. You all were delightful guests and we would love to have you stay with us again. One of the reasons that we have so many repeat guests is because of the time and budget we spend on home maintenance. Not only do we change out one a/c unit every year (ensuring that no one ever spends a hot night in our home due to mechanical failure), we are constantly changing out furniture and appliances, painting the walls, painting trim, replacing boards, door knobs and doors and faucets, etc. So while there may be a little wear and tear, please be assured that it will be taken care of. Thanks again for staying at our home. Barbara
