Wonderful family home with amazing views
Villa Artemis is a wonderful family home just outside of the main village. It was spotlessly clean and well equipped. Ileana and her family were so friendly and helpful. The views are amazing. You definitely do need transport though as the house is set away from the village and the beach. It is lovely and quiet and the pool is specatacular. We travelled with 5 teenage children and we all loved it - Ios is a youngsters paradise.
Ios ormos (Bay), is a spectacular bay which includes the main ferry port 2 amazing beaches and a very attractive marina for visiting yachtsmen. Also clustered around the Port bare a group of traditional Taverna Restaurants, a good selection of shops including bakery, supermarket, boutiques and a travel agency (where you can buy ferry tickets, etc.) Regular bus service will take you from the port straight to the village situated on the top of the hill, then down to beautiful, well known Mylopotas Beach. The village of Chora can also be accessed on foot by an old and stepped donkey track. During the day, Chora is a peaceful traditional picturesque white painted Cycladic village with winding streets to explore and many shops, restaurants and bars. Chora is proud of its beautiful churches and fine windmills. At night, Chora transforms and becomes a party village with a large choice of bars and discotheques where partying goes on until dawn. Besides the port and Chora, Ios has a few small settlements around its major beaches (Theodoti, Kalamos, Manganari). German architect Peter Haupt has created a very scenic amphitheatre. It is located at the top of the village and is used to stage cultural events. During the 1970s the island had attracted many young travellers who spent nights in their sleeping bags on the popular beach of Mylopotas after partying through the night. Today Mylopotas beach has been developed into a tourist resort with bars, coffee shops, restaurants, organised water sports and scuba diving schools accommodating all tourist needs. In recent years Ios has also attracted tourists who want to enjoy a quiet vacation with very little to do and relax, and bathe in the sun rays. For the more energetic ones who prefer walking holidays Ios has become an excellent destination too. At the end of the day why not enjoy the calm and atmospheric scenery around the port and watch the sun go down while enjoying a meal, or relaxing with a glass of Ouzo. Whatever your holiday requirement it can be found on Ios. Ios Activities Go windsurfing or waterskiing Take a banana ride or a tube ride Hire a pedal boat, canoe or kayak Go snorkelling Hire a speedboat taxi to one of the many beaches in Ios Learn to dive Play beach volleyball at Mylopotas Beach, Enjoy a refreshing cocktail or a cold beer while soaking up some rays, Enjoy local Greek cuisine and fresh seafood at a traditional Greek tavern at Manganari Beach or Psathi Beach Sight-seeing Explore Chora (the only village in Ios) during the day and wander the narrow streets of this lovely traditional Cycladic village. Climb to the top of the hill in Hora for spectacular 365 degree views of the Island and the Church of Holy Mary Gremiotissa Visit the Odysseas Elytis Theatre, an open amphitheatre which hosts many concerts and festivals during the summer months. Visit Homers Tomb. Homer is said to have been buried in Ios. His tomb is in Plakatos, which can easily be accessed by car or motorbike. Ios Island has some of the most spectacular and clean beaches in Europe. There are 75km of beautiful white sandy beaches and turquoise coastlines around the island. Mylopotas Beach is the most organised and popular beach in Ios. It is regularly features in polls as one of the 'Top 10 Beaches in Europe'. We could say that on this island there is a beach to cater for every traveller's needs - from busy to secluded, windy to calm, soft white sand to pebbles, or action-packed water-sports to pure relaxation. Ios has 3 Blue Flag beaches - Mylopotas, Manganari and Yialos. Ios Greece beaches have been featured in 2 films in the last few years - 'The Big Blue (Le grand bleu)' filmed some scenes at Manganari Beach. You can explore the island and all the beautiful views by car, moped or a quad bike for the day or you can hire a small boat from the port to explore by sea. If you like your privacy, you can approach some remote beaches. Ios is situated half way between Santorini, Folegandros and Naxos, and regular ferries make it possible to visit these islands for a days excursion. Ios has a great selection of restaurants that cater for all tastes - from local Greek cuisine to more international menus, and from fine dining to relaxed holiday fare. When the idea of kicking back and relaxing over a large glass of wine is the only thing that is pressing on your mind, Ios is the perfect place to be! If you want to try some traditional greek food either for lunch or dinner, all you have to do is visit Polydoras restaurant in Koumbara beach, just 500 meters from Villa Artemis.
