These cosy and comfortable one-bedroom apartments share a shaded terrace or outside seating area as well as lovely views looking out towards the sparkling waters of the Bay of Kotor. A former city of the Venetian Republic, Perast has been perfectly preserved and boasts some of the finest examples of Baroque architecture on the Adriatic Coast. The Campanile church tower, built by Giuseppe Beati, is the highest on the eastern coast of the Adriatic, while the stone promenade is a charming place to while away a few hours in the sunshine, with the enticing aromas of almond cake - a traditional Perast sweet - scenting the air. Outstanding examples of palaces must include the sumptuous Bujovic palace, today the Museum of Perast. It was built in 1694 and decorated with five harmonious balconies opening off paired arcades on three sides of the building and fronted by a spacious cross-vaulted porch supported by massive pillars carved in the bugnatto technique. The Bujovic palace is still one of the most beautiful edifices on the Montenegrin coast.

Perast continued to develop culturally and architecturally throughout the centuries. The construction of luxurious palaces, chapels and churches, the importance of works of art and the ongoing literary activity give evidence of an intense industry out of proportion to the size of the town and the number of its inhabitants.

Probably the most distinctive standard bearers of the identity of Perast are the two magical islands situated between the Verige strait and the town. Although differing in many respects, they lie in harmonious conjunction, united by the vastness of the sea. The abbey of St.George remained a burial place until 1866, when a new graveyard was built in the northern part of the town. The church once housed paintings dating from 1327 and 1457; the latter painted by Lovro Marinov Dobricevic, a famous painter from Kotor. The island of St. George is an intense, stalwart, dark and inward-looking natural island while Our Lady of the Rock is a slender, gay, light-filled “floating” island – a man made island. The island was built artificially by scuttling old ships and depositing stones around a small crag. The name of the island derived from the word skrpjel – an old word for a crag. The construction of a sanctuary began in the first century of the Venetian rule. The sanctuary was dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin because this cult (Assunzione della Vergine) was greatly venerated by the Venetians.

The original church was built in the mid-15th century and was of modest proportions. Over the centuries, the “island” was constantly enlarged and reinforced by both deposits of stones and scuttled sailing ships until it provided a sufficient base for a bolder architectural undertaking. Most of the present-day church was erected after the great earthquake of 1667 when the original sanctuary was destroyed. It is a single-nave, modestly proportioned church in the Byzantine style. The Our Lady of the Rock has a distinctive baroque appearance. The interior of the church was decorated by Tripo Kokolja, a famous 17th-century painter from Perast. On the altar is the famous icon of Our Lady of the Rock, a 15th century work by Lovro Marinov Dobricevic. It is the most valuable work of art in the church because its history is so closely related to that of the island.

There are a number of festivals in Perast thorught the year:

Fasinada – This is a custom called “Fasinada” which is unique to the town of Perast as well as to the whole Mediterranean coast. On the 22nd of July , the inhabitants of Perast commemorate the year 1452 when an icon of the Virgin was found on a small crag in the sea and the construction of the island of Our Lady of the Rock began. On this day every year, people bring stones in their boats and drop them into the sea around the island. The custom has both symbolic and practical meaning. Adding rocks reinforces the island which is constantly washed and eroded by the sea. The simplicity of the occasion, striped of all elements of folklore, evokes the memory of the centuries-long efforts that were needed to build, from a small crag (skrpjel), this little island with its lovely church.

Regatta Cup Fasinada – On the 22nd of July, the same day as the celebration of Fasinada, a regatta is held off Perast. In the memory of Perast’s magnificent history of sea-faring and navigation, all the sailboats in the Boka participate in a regatta for the Fasinada Cup. About hundred sailing boats in senior and junior categories generally compete for a “cup” (actually a statue) and an honorary inscription on the plaque of the lighthouse of Our Lady of the Rock where the prizes are awarded. The finish line, both real and symbolic, is an imaginary line between the two islands – St. George and Our Lady of the Rock.

International Festival of Klape (traditional bands) –The festival is held annually on the second weekend of August. The participants are klape (traditional bands) form the Mediterranean countries, who sing “a kapela”. This is the only festival of klape in Montenegro.
