About this property
Branta Cottage - a cottage that sleeps 4 guests in 2 bedrooms
Fantastic views over the Nith Estuary, great for watching the wildfowl.
Graded 3* by Visit Scotland, the cottage sits, not too far from Dumfries, in a rural location on the owner's dairy farm and has superb views over the upper reaches of the Nith Estuary on the Solway coast. The area is famed for its connections with Sir Peter Scott who created the wonderful wild fowl reserve at Caerlaverock for wintering geese and other birds.
The reserve is just 3 miles away but the wild life can be enjoyed from the lovely riverside walks direct from the cottage with abundant birds and wildlife to spot, including red squirrels and deer. The cottage has an attractive enclosed garden to the rear with a patio giving views to the river and beyond to the hills. The steps down from the garden lead into the carefully renovated Visit Scotland 3*cottage has natural wood finishes throughout. The cottage has views of the river from the sitting room and front bedroom and provides comfortable accommodation for 4 in one double and one twin bed room, the sitting room has a wood stove for cosy nights in after long days out enjoying wild life watching, cycling, fishing or just exploring this fabulous part of Scotland. There are many quiet roads ideal for cycling, excellent walks on the salt-marshes surrounding the historic and unique Caerlaverock Castle, 3 miles away or in the Forestry Commission's Woodlands at Mabie and Ae Forest. The areas rich history includes Sweet Heart Abbey at New Abbey. the birth place of the famous writer and historian Thomas Carlyle at Ecclefechan, J M Barrie's house Moat Brae in Dumfries and not to forget Robert Burns who farmed and wrote at Ellisland Farm just north of Dumfries, where he spent the last years of his life.
The small riverside villages of Glencaple and Kingholm Quay are nearby with good restaurants and local shops while Dumfries in only 3 miles.
