Bed and bath linen is provided for rent at a cost of €10.00 per person
Nestled on the edge of the fertile plain of the lower Coghinas river, Viddalba is a town with Gallurese language and traditions, on the western border of Gallura with Anglona, just south of Badesi and a few minutes from the beautiful beaches of the Gulf of Asinara, an ideal setting for sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing enthusiasts. According to popular accounts, the hamlets around the main town, which arose in the Middle Ages, were the scene of the raids of the \'Mute of Gallura\', a deaf-mute bandit of the late 19th century who marked local history. Originally the town\'s resource was livestock farming, today it is tourism, agriculture, particularly the cultivation of watermelons, potatoes, tomatoes and especially \'spiny\' artichokes, and crafts, especially the processing of fabrics, wrought iron and stone.
Trekking and horse riding enthusiasts will traverse, amid Mediterranean scents, fascinating country roads in the stazzi and on the heights that delimit the territory to the east. The trails lead to the top of Monti Ruiu, crossing rocks of an intense red, and to Mount San Gavino, where 20 \'bolted routes\' are a training ground for paragliding and climbing enthusiasts. At the summit (800 metres) stands the church of San Gavino a monte, where a folk festival is held on 1 May in honour of the saint. The Viddalba stretch of the Coghinas flows through pine and eucalyptus woods, rich in eels, carp, sea bass, tench and populated by herons, coots and moorhens. It is a venue for sport fishing and a destination for kayaking and birdwatching. A few minutes from the town, on a bank of the river, are the Casteldoria thermal baths: its salt-bromine-iodine waters with healing properties, already exploited by the Romans, Doria and Aragonese, spring up at over 70 degrees. The river continues downstream, encountering the meanders of Mount San Giovanni, where you will find a park, panoramic terraces and the Romanesque church of San Giovanni Evangelista, dating back to the 12th century and then completely rebuilt. The statue of the saint is kept in the church of San Leonardo. Festivals and fairs are accompanied by traditional rhythms and costumes, an opportunity to taste Gallurese soup, meats, cheeses and wines. Among the events, the Gallurese wedding stands out, with poetic competitions, horse parades, songs and dances.
The Viddalba plain was frequented since the Neolithic period, as evidenced by the domus de Janas, and was continuously inhabited from the Early Bronze Age (18th century BC). Near the sanctuary of San Leonardo you will see the ruins of a nuragic village, on which the vast necropolis of San Leonardo was built between the late 3rd and 4th century AD. From this have emerged precious funeral furnishings and dozens of decorated funerary stelae, which constituted the \'marker\' of cremation tombs, now kept in the civic archaeological museum, one of the main exhibitions in the province of Sassari. It is dedicated to testimonies from the entire lower Coghinas valley: from Neolithic and Eneolithic ceramic and lithic finds to Punic, Roman and Renaissance coins.
Sea just a few minutes away, wellness and sports activities, nature and archaeology, tradition and good food: Viddalba has everything for a wonderful holiday!
