Meddlars - A romantic cottage by a historic Town great for walks, pubs and shops.
This romantic bolt-hole is set in the historic Town of Hadleigh, great for pubs and shops but also walks straight into the countryside . With lots of original charm in addition to modern conveniences, we’re sure you won’t be disappointed.
Cottage Walk Through
Meddlars dates from the 1600s but has all the modern touches, like its marble floor and well equipped kitchen to its wet room shower. Yet it still retains much of its historic charm, and its ancient timbers transport you back to days gone by.
The advantage of this cottage is that it is priced at the rate for a one bedroom cottage, but it does have a nice little second bedroom suitable for a third adult.
You enter the cottage into a cosy sitting room with a cosy real flame gas fire to toast your toes by, at the end of this room is an open staircase winding up over the dining alcove.
Beyond the dining area is the long modern kitchen with a door out to the back garden.
Upstairs there is a pretty double bedroom, a wet room shower bathroom and a single bedroom.
Garden
There is a small but fully enclosed garden to the rear of the cottage with herbs to pick, a patio decked area and BBQ, and of course we provide bicycles.
Outside
There is a lovely walk a couple of hundred yards from the cottage, taking you along the disused railway line into the countryside, or if you stroll into town there is a picturesque riverside walk which meanders behind the High Street, along the fields of the Brett river valley.
You are situated at the edge of the small Historic Market Town of Hadleigh, as you walk into town, your road becomes the High Street.
There is parking in the cul-de-sac opposite
The fields and open countryside start just a few yard further out of town from the cottage.
Green Credentials
This ancient house was renovated using traditional building methods where possible.
Bikes are provided for guests to use and to explore the cycle routes that run from the disused railway track all over Suffolk.
Local Area
Meddlars is on the edge of Hadleigh which is a pretty market town with masses of historic buildings and a very good High Street filled with interesting and independent boutiques and shops.
Being situated in a bustling village on the road into the High Street, those seeking a quieter retreat should note that we may have other cottages better suited. On the other hand being in a historic village location, this cottage is really perfect for those who want to be just a stroll away from interesting pubs, restaurants, cafe’s, historic buildings, riverside walks and interesting shops, with lovely countryside from just round the corner.
The town is known for its wonderful pargetting (make sure you look up at the buildings as you walk past) and has a beautiful 15th century Guildhall and a total of 246 listed Historic buildings.
There are a number of pubs and restaurants in the town, you can read all about them on our Hadleigh local area page.
Just a short drive away are famous places like Flatford Mill in Constable Country, where the painter John Constable lived and did many of his most well known paintings like the Haywain. There are lovely walks along the river to Dedham from here, or in summer you can hire rowing boats and row up the river and pull up onto the river bank for a picnic.
Sudbury is where Thomas Gainsborough (England’s most famous portrait painter) was born, and his house is now open as a Museum which contains a world-class collection of his works.
Kersey, Suffolk’s prettiest tiny medieval village, is a lovely place to visit and has some good circular walks round beautiful countryside, it is also where the lovely old pub The Bell lies just beside the ford.
Then there is Lavenham, which is England’s best preserved Medieval Village. And all the tiny little historic villages along the river valley.
Ipswich is a 20 minute drive away and the best unspoilt Suffolk coastal destinations start in about 50 minutes
