Baska (island of Krk, Croatia) is the most famous tourist centre on the biggest Adriatic island, which position makes it the closest island to the Central European market. With its cultural heritage and offer in general, it is definitely one of the most interesting and attractive places on Croatian part of the Adriatic Sea as well as in Europe, which you can personally experience by staying in our apartments.
Sights and Attractions in Baška
One of the region's most attractive locations is undoubtedly the beach of Vela Plaža, the most popular with those who come to swim in the area. One of Baška's symbols, and a key element in its landscape, it is 1,800 metres (1.1. mi) long and faces a crystal-clear sea. Since 1999 it has been the proud recipieng of the European Blue Flag award, which testifies to its high-quality standards.
Many activities and entertainments await visitors there: restaurants and cafes are present all around it, and pedal boats, windsurf boards, beach umbrellas, and sun loungers are available for rent.
Besides Vela Plaža, Baška is also home to more than thirty beaches; the most famous of these are the ones near the bays of Vela Luka and Mala Luka, the FKK beach near the Bunculuka camp, and the beaches of Konjska, Vrženica, Jablanovo, Storišće, and Dubna.
While many beaches may be reached on foot, some require a boat or taxi boat ride; the view from a distance which the last option offers, however, allows for a better enjoyment of the gorgeous local beaches steeped in peace and quiet.
Top ten sights and attractions:
THE BAŠKA TABLET
The Church of St. Lucy in Jurandvor houses a replica of one of the most significant Croatian monuments - the Baška Tablet. It is the oldest known document containing a Croatian personal name written in the Croatian Glagolitic script.
THE BEACH OF VELA PLAŽA
The 1.8 km-long beach of Vela Plaža has been a symbol of Baška's landscape since the inception of its tourism industry. It is the recipient of the European Blue Flag Award that testifies to the high-quality standard of its environment, and is consequently the most popular summer destination for swimmers and beach goers.
THE „PATH TO THE MOON“
The „Path to the Moon“, 7,5 km long trail, is suitable for both hikers and bikers, and runs through a forest area for most of its length; it then reaches a completely barren area called the “Moon Plateau”, which is reminiscent of a rocky desert and is one of the region's must-see locations.
BAŠKA AQUARIUM
In the very center of Baška you can learn about the rich and diverse underwater world of the Croatian Adriatic through one of the largest collections of Adriatic seashells and sea snails in Croatia.Aquarium Baška, on a 200m2area, is home to 21 aquariums with a hundred species of fish and four hundred species of seashells and sea snails.
ZIP LINE
Athletes, holidaymakers and families with children may enjoy the Edison Zipline, an off-road ride along more than 2 km of cables running through trees and a stunning landscape that will prove truly unforgettable.
BAŠKA’S GLAGOLITIC TRAIL
Baška's Glagolitic trail meanders through the area’s landscape and the 35 stone sculptures showing all the letters of the Croatian Glagolitic alphabet that are displayed along its path. The BGT guidebook accompanies visitors along the trail by supplying the meaning and explanation of all the individual letters on show, as well as a map indicating the stones’ relevant location.
PRVIĆ ISLAND
A short boat ride suffices to reach Croatia’s largest uninhabited island that is also protected as a special botanical and ornithological reserve. Although Prvić is not suitable for either walking or exploring, there are several smaller coves along its coast to enjoy the sunshine and the sea.
THE BAYS OF MALA LUKA AND VELA LUKA
A hiking trail or a taxi boat ride convey visitors to Vela Luka, one of the most beautiful bays in the Adriatic Sea. An additional twenty-minute walk then takes them to the beautiful Mala Luka bay; the neighbouring archaeological site of the Corinthia fortress offers a stunning view of both bays.
THE MULTICELLULAR SHEEPFOLDS
Numerous hiking and cycling trails pass by multicellular sheepfolds, which are dry-walled structures employed to sort out and count sheep. These sheepfolds are a fundamental example of folk architecture and may be found in just two other locations in Europe, namely Wales (UK) and Iceland.
THE BATOMALJ SHRINE
The Church of Our Lady of Gorica, one of the oldest Marian shrines in Croatia, may be reached either via the Educational Trail, or by driving along a tarmacked road, or else by climbing a 237-step staircase. The church was built in 1415 and is renowned for its bell, which dates to 1594 and traditionally tolls when the bishop of Krk visits the Baška valley.
