Paradise on Earth

The photos here are incredible, and still don't give this villa true justice. I spent a birthday week here with a group of friends and the location was perfect. The villa is luxurious but cozy, with amenities to satisfy all variety of traveler. The decor and furnishings perfectly compliment the architecture and locale. The owners took such great care of us and the property, I am already anxious to return! It really doesn't get better than this...

Hidden Gem in Sonora

  • 5 of 5

Before coming here, I would have failed miserably at finding San Carlos on a map. I expect most people to have a difficult time locating its whereabouts on a map, except for its Spanish-centric name. Then again, there’s a town in Missouri called Mexico. So minus some aerial and street view shots from google, I did not know what to expect. As me and my mates pulled up to the villa we were greeted with seashell artwork that was more detailed than I’ve ever seen, but I was tired from the drive and it was dark. I had no intentions to look at anything other than a bed for a siesta. But that plan was foiled the instant I walked into the pool room. I wanted to bathe in that cool water like it was bathed in amber light. It was out of a dream. I wondered how much amazement I would have for the place during the day. After a romp around the villa and a walk to the beach, we cracked open some refreshments and listened to the sea break on the cliffs. There are two things in the whole world I would want to wake up to, first being the view of the crisp blue sea from the master bedroom, and second would be Natalie Portman. The garden was spectacular. Incredibly large, lush and well designed. There are places in the world that arouse from the ground an air of contemplation, excitement, and creativity. This place is one of them. The watchtower itself will breathe into you a kind of elation, an exhilaration that you are able to see such things, and be where exactly where you stand. If a black cat crossing your path gives you bad luck, then dolphins crossing in front of you should remove a lifetime of it. There is however two major cons about this place. You will have to leave. You will not want to. You will imagine as you lay sunbathing what kind of profession you can pick up in town to stay. What children you could sell to keep this dream going. Secondly, it does not come with any Natalie Portmans.

Oh the views!!!

  • 5 of 5

Sanctuary on the Sea is just that. The peace and beauty we found in this unique villa was enveloping. From our bed upstairs we had a magnificent view of the sunrise each morning on the water. All of the quarters upstairs have two large sliding glass doors facing the breathe taking view of the Sea of Cortez. We saw dolphins right from the ocean front court yard, as well as sea lions and all sorts of birds! The home itself has so much to explore, with multiple courtyards, murals- a unique history. The town of San Carlos is charming, with plenty to do for everyone. From wind surfing and kayaking, to shopping and excellent food, not to mention gorgeous beaches. Apparently The Mask of Zorro was filmed here, at least in part. I can definitely see that with the beauty of the beaches and landscape. Only draw back for me was getting stung by a jellyfish, but we should have talked with the local dive shop before we struck out on kayaks to our own little snorkeling destination. There was a rare southerly warm wind that brought them in, so it's pretty unusual, especially for November. Not the first time I've been stung, probably not the last! I have to mention too the sunsets. The clouds, the lighting, the brilliancy of color... honestly the most breathe taking sunsets I've ever seen.

Peaceful

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent a wonderful Thanksgiving here, one of the most peaceful and relaxing holidays I can remember. It's like a completely different world. I remember getting up in the morning, having a glass of freshly-squeezed orange juice from the courtyard fruit trees, and going down through the gardens to the little palapa overlooking the bay. Here I watched long lines of pelicans floating past, first one direction and then the other, while my husband did a bit of fishing. The view is breath-taking, and the quality of the light is indescribable. Everything seems luminous all the time. For lunch sometimes we would eat just tortillas and guacamole, though the property has a very nice kitchen. But it's hard to imagine tastier food than the lardy little local tortillas--I could eat them plain.

Although it's wonderful to feel like you're in your own solitary paradise, it's also fun to go exploring in town. And a sunset cruise in the bay is an absolutely unforgettable experience. The villa itself is spacious, comfortable, and very interesting to explore.

A True Sanctuary!!!

  • 5 of 5

The villa is the closest to heaven we've ever been.

As we explored the house when we arrived, we could not believe how beautiful it was. Although we had studied the photos on the website, each room was more comfortable and beautiful than the next. The staff could not have been more helpful. The house is unique in how many places there are to sit and relax. We were a large family gathering and it was always easy to find a quiet place by yourself. We loved that you could walk to town. Don't miss taking a sunset cruise! I really can't say anything negative about the house or our expereince. If you are looking for a place for a group to be together, be it a girls' retreat, a family reunion or just a couple of friends you couldn't pick a greater place.
