Location:
From a historic capital to a beach-laden coast, it’s all there to be discovered on the Greek island of Rhodes.
At the top of the island, the capital city is an impressive starting point – you’ll find the airport about 20 minutes’ drive to the west. The medieval Old Town in Rhodes city is one of the best-preserved of its kind in Europe, offering up all sorts of architectural treasures. You can take a look around part of the vast Palace of the Grand Masters, the main attraction of this UNESCO World Heritage site. This former citadel and fortress hosts various exhibitions and performances throughout the year. Also within the complex is Rhodes’ Archaeological Museum.
Just up the road, the Rhodes Aquarium occupies the island’s most northerly spot, and the popular Elli Beach hugs the curve of the coast. You should also make time for Mandraki Port and a walk along the city walls. Other notable attractions include the Museum of Modern Greek Art and the National Theatre.
Head for Orfanidou Street to check out the city’s biggest concentration of bars and clubs, try your luck at the casino or look into Rhodes’ dining scene. While you wouldn’t always strike gold, there are certainly great places among the tourist traps, some taking inspiration from other international cuisines.
About 25km from Rhodes city, the Valley of the Butterflies is one of the island’s best-loved attractions. Visit in summer for the best chance of seeing the creatures en masse, as they swarm into the valley. Near Kolympia, the Epta Piges (Seven Springs), showcases yet more of the natural beauty of Rhodes, with peaceful wooded areas and the spectacular waterfalls the park is named after.
All over the island, fascinating old buildings punctuate the landscape, with ruined castles, monasteries and fortresses waiting to be discovered. If you head down the western coast, the remains of Kritinia Castle occupy an impressive position, looking out into the mighty Aegean Sea. The Lindos Acropolis is another one not to miss – it’s a steep ascent to the clifftop site but you’ll be able to savour some stunning Mediterranean views.
Lindos also offers some lovely beaches, like St Paul’s Bay, and many recommended restaurants. The village is famed for its many rooftop terraces – you may be able to spot the one you want to dine on from the Acropolis.
Further south, make time for a visit to the wonderful Prasonisi Beach – a landmark lighthouse also sits right at the tip of the island. There are many more excellent beaches further north – Afantou, Archangelos and Agathi are among those on the eastern coast, while Kameiros and Soroni are on the western side. For a family day out, Faliraki is one of the best-equipped beaches on the island, with a lot of child-friendly attractions nearby.
