Beautiful House in Great Location

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay in this excellent well equipped house.

We were met by the owners on route from the airport who were very helpful.

The house was very well appointed and the large living area was perfect for

relaxing after days of walking or visiting Iceland's attractions.

We stayed at the end of September, and had some very good weather days and as it was getting dark at around 8.30pm we got to see some spectacular Northern lights on two evenings.

Also at this time of year the autumn colour in the forests if stunning.

Laugarvatn is just 1.5km to the south and has a useful general store, and the excellent Lindin restaurant, and the Fontana spa. The Cafe Gallery is also very good.

This was our 4th visit to this part of Iceland, and I think this house in this location has been the best.

Lovely comfortable warm house, great location. Felt right at home.

  • 5 of 5

We met with the owners at an easy to find location near large supermarket so we could stock up for the week. Lovely and helpful. The house was lovely and warm on arrival after about an hour's drive, just past hamlet of Laugarvatn. Beautifully designed house with lovely large living area and kitchen, and lovely comfy bedrooms. The area is perfect for Golden circle visits. Geysir and Gullfoss are within 40 minutes drive and recommend that you visit early or late in day ( because you can) because it gets madly busy during the day. The low sun at these times make for better photos too. Famous meat (lamb) soup and bread, (free refills), are 1950 krn and very welcome after a refreshing walk around Gullfoss. Drove to Sólheimajökull (2 hours) and booked online for a guided glacier walk (£268 for 4 people), amazing experience for anyone from 10 years and older. Then went a bit further to Vik and had a walk down the Black Sand Beach. A drive back to visit Reykjavik took about an hour, parked on outskirts near sea (cheaper then centre). Had some great fish and chips on the harbour. Thingvellir national park is only 15 mins drive from house and we did a 2 hour walk, (took 3.5 because we had to stop to keep takings photos!). Seljalandsfoss and Skógarfoss waterfalls are beautiful driving (2hours) east on route 1, dress in full waterproofs if you want to go behind Seljalandsfoss, and a bit of a walk for making the most of Skógafoss. There are clean free toilets behind the gas station in Hvolsvöllur if you need them on the journey east towards these sights. But make sure you investigate Laugarvatn early in your holiday. There is a good free little yellow guide book on the Strax shop/cafe, which has maps, vouchers and recommendations. Great walks along the lakeside then up into the hills for great views of lake and local flora. You can go down to the lake past the Fontana spa and experience the geothermal springs and walk along to the Galleri Cafe for ryebread cooked in hot earth and smoked trout from the lake for lunch, followed by a waffle with local crowberry jam. There are Icelandic horses everywhere and can be hired if that's your thing. Great souvenir shops at Geysir and gulfoss, and Reykjavik, and despite the expensive prices on first look, we found that the same items are more expensive at duty free in airport!! So buy when you see, don't wait. Fantastic week all round and doesn't have to cost a fortune.

Beautiful getaway

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 4 stayed here for 4 nights during our stay in South Iceland in August. This is beautifully decorated with every amenity that you could want during your stay. It is modern, sleek and spacious. We were able to cook breakfasts at the home before we ventured out for the day. The town of Laugarvatn is a quiet village close to all areas of the Golden Circle as well as South Iceland. The owners were responsive to communications before and during the trip- showed us where to do grocery shopping before getting to the home. They recommended that we eat at Lindin in town- definitely make a reservation and go for dinner-beautiful view of the lake too. The deck has a dining table and chairs so after a long day it was nice to relax outside when it was still light out in the evenings. Glad we stayed here instead of a boring hotel.

As Described!

  • 5 of 5

Secluded, very clean (and I am very picky!), well stocked with everything a traveler could want. Good communication with owner. The house is well situated in the Golden Circle area. Good jumping off point to do a day trip along the southern coast to Vik. I would highly suggest (and the owners recommended to us) to grocery shop on the way for most of your meals. The cafes/restaurants were spotty, expensive and not on our schedule- plan on packing snacks/picnic for hikes etc. Also the house is geothermal heated, which is great. You can open the doors/windows to cool off in the summer. There were a lot of midges on warmer days and we were worried about them coming into the house with the windows open but it didn't seem to be a problem (luckily!). We enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend.

Beautiful house

  • 5 of 5

We found everything as described and really enjoyed our stay in this beautiful house. The owners are very nice. They gave us a route description at our meeting point with which we found the house without any problems.

The house is a real feeling-well house and well equipped. We found everything we needed. As already others mentioned the house is quite warm but by opening the windows we could regulate the temperatur down.

We made several excursions (times given are one way car drive):

Geysir (20 min) and Gullfoss (15 min more), Kerid crater

Vik (2,5 hours ) with Selfoss waterfall and Solheimar glacier, Black sand beach (Reynisfarnar)

Reykjavik (1 hour) with whale watching and yes we saw mink whales, dolphins several kinds of sea birds and a humback whale which was very interested in whale watching boats and came out of the water several times

Thingvellir (20 min)

We had a very interesting and relaxing week in Laugarvatn and we can just recommend the house and the region of South-West of Iceland.

Just one more recommendation: In summer there are many tourists on the hopspots like Gullfoss, Thingvellir and the Geysir. But as these main attraction are all not far away from the house you can go there at times where not many people are there, e.g. after 20:00 or in the early morning. You can look up at the google pages how many people there are.

Thanks to Martha and Rakel and Rakel's husband for letting us their house.

Laugarvatn is around 70 km from Reykjavík, placed midways between Þingvellir and Geysir – in the heart of the Golden Circle. The shortest way from Reykjavík lies through Þingvellir. The longer way lies towards Selfoss but turns left shortly before you get there for road no. 37 which takes you to Laugarvatn, about 90 km.

Laugarvatn has since long ago been a settlement for education and a popular summer resort among Icelanders. Today the population of Laugarvatn is around 250 but the number doubles during the winter month when the students arrive.

In the Laugardalur valley is a big area of cottages, hence there is various opportunity for leisure, i.e. one of the countries best sports-hall together with a outside swimmingpool and a fantastic sports-ground. By the lake of Laugarvatn it is possible to rent boats and windsurfing boards. All around Laugarvatn you will find lots of good walking paths, a golfcourse and an opportunity for angling in rivers and lakes, rent horses etc.

The Laugarvatn Fontana Spa opened in july 2011. See

In the village you will find, in addition to a great swimming pool, a post office, grocery store and a restaurant

Just outside Laugarvatn there is a golf course and possibilites for angling in waters and rivers and the area is great for hiking.

Laugarvatn is situated in a beautiful spot in the town of Laugarvatn, about 73 kilometres (45 miles) from the nation’s capital driving through Thingvellir or Parliament Plains. It is the perfect base for touring the “Golden Circle”, a triad of Iceland’s most popular natural wonders, the mighty Gullfoss waterfall, Geysir hot springs and Thingvellir National Park, the ancient site of the world’s first parliament.
