About this property

Cosy Coastal 2-Bedroom Cottage with Hot Tub & Log Burner

Elmtree Cottage offers unforgettable views of the Blackwater Estuary for you to soak up whilst enjoying a lazy morning in bed. Once you’re up and ready for the day, stomp along the protected and historic beaches on your doorstep, or indulge in some of Mersea Island's world-famous Oysters and seafood. Whatever you choose to do during your stay, Elmtree Cottage is certainly the perfect location to create your own wonderful memories you'll cherish for a lifetime.

The space:

Elmtree Cottage is an old and quirky little home, in fact it is one of the oldest properties on Mersea Island. Expect lots of exposed beams, floorboards and low level ceilings in places. The property is perfect for those that value character and charm over homogenous and clinical.
Within the triple aspect main bedroom, sitting up in your king size bed, you can enjoy multiple views across the estuary watching a wide variety of boats swaying at their moorings.
From the living/dining room, you can sit at the table and also enjoy views across the estuary, whilst spotting the local wildlife leap in and out of your private garden.
Nonetheless, despite the character and charm, we endeavour to sympathetically blend in the requirements of modern living. Firstly, you can expect fibre optic WiFi throughout the property, with download speeds of up to 150mbps. Secondly, you are welcome to enter your login details into the various streaming services on the HD television to avoid missing your favourite programs. Finally, please be assured the property has full heating and lighting provision, with hot and cold running water!
Guest access
Elmtree Cottage will be your exclusive and private little home by the sea for the duration of your stay.
You have your own parking space. No shared access points. No shared rooms. No shared garden. 100% yours to enjoy.
Other things to note
Mersea Island *can* briefly get cut off from the mainland at high tide, but it is rarely for longer than 2 hours.

Before you arrive, it is always worth checking the time of the high tide; Search ‘Tide Times’ on the Internet, select your website of choice (e.g. BBC Weather) and enter ‘West Mersea’ as your location.

If the height of the high tide is LESS than 5m, the sea is unlikely to flood the road and you don’t need to adjust your plans. However, if the height of the high tide is MORE than 5m, it is best not to arrive within an hour before, or an hour after high tide.

I strongly discourage any driver attempting to drive across a flooded road, not least due to risk of a road incident, but because salt water and cars do not mix well!

Worst case, if your travels don’t go to plan and you face a long delay getting on to the island, the Peldon Rose Pub is a minute away, serving very good food and refreshments whilst you wait to see when the queue of cars begin to move - then you know the tide has dropped sufficiently :-D

This place is magical, if you love the old world, bygone times as I would put it. The cottage is amazing. You have a view from every room, kitchen, lounge, master bedroom, even the bathroom (if youre sitting on the loo) Its amazing.Whoever built this place years ago, they knew what they were doing. Im missing the view so much now Im home, its amazing. The hosts are great. They really do everything they can to make you welcome. This is a fabulous place. So glad I booked it.

Just love this location

Amazing location. Right in middle of where you want to be but so peaceful too. Love dual aspect windows in main bedroom which overlook the sea. Rowland has added a great garden sofa/table area outside with optional sun screen, so we spent most of our time chilling in the garden, soaking up the view and enjoying the fresh catch of the day from over the road. If you want to unwind, this is the place to do it. Rowland is a great host and a pleasure to deal with directly. Love West Mersea and Elmtree Cottage is the best place to stay on the Island without doubt.

About the host

I've been visiting Mersea Island for decades and my parents retired here approximately 10 years ago. In 2022, we had the opportunity to purchase one of the most iconic properties on Mersea Island with its accompanying property, the ever-so-charming 'Elmtree Cottage'. So we took the plunge and embarked upon our first holiday property, completed a substantial upgrade and we look forward to hosting you at the beautiful Elmtree Cottage.

Why they chose this property

Elmtree Cottage is an old and quirky little home, in fact it is one of the oldest properties on Mersea Island. Expect lots of exposed beams, floorboards and low level ceilings in places. The property is perfect for those that value character and charm over characterless and clinical.

Nonetheless, despite the character and charm, we endeavour to sympathetically blend in the requirements of modern living;
- A complementary hot tub in the garden, set to 35 degrees and available for your use throughout your stay. The perfect place to enjoy a [plastic] glass of fizz whilst watching the sunset.
- You can expect fibre optic WiFi throughout the property, with download speeds of up to 150mbps.
- The HD television is ready for you to enter your login details into the various streaming services to avoid missing your favourite programs (Please note; There is no free-to-air TV service).

What makes this property unique

Elmtree Cottage provides you with your very own, secluded little sanctuary in the heart of the waterside scene. When you stay at Elmtree Cottage, you don't walk to or past the beautiful views, you live them - whether you're sat up in bed enjoying a morning brew, eating breakfast in the dining area, savouring a meal on the raised patio area or sipping a sundowner from the luxury of your hot tub. Every aspect of Elmtree Cottage provides you with unprecedented views of the Blackwater Estuary and National Nature Reserve.

Elmtree Cottage will be your exclusive and private little home by the sea for the duration of your stay. You have your own parking space. No shared access points. No shared rooms. No shared garden. 100% yours to enjoy.
