Edric's Farmhouse is a Grade II listed sixteenth century building with a fascinating history. It's nestled in a tranquil valley, less than 20 minutes from the Jurassic Coast's stunning beaches. Set in an acre of private garden and surrounded by farmland, it's perfect for a luxury family holiday or a special gathering. Have dinner watching the sun sink behind the valley. Discover country pubs with beer out of the barrel. Take walks from the front door or along the fabulous South West Coast Path.
Edric's Farmhouse is let as an entire home for sole use of the guests including private garden. Private parking for up to 4 cars. Minimum 7 night stay, with changeovers on Saturdays.
THE GROUNDS: There is a wonderfully quiet private garden – an acre of lawns, patios, trees and flowers with a swingset, trampoline, treehouse, table tennis table and badminton set. There are comfy rattan sofas and cushions to sprawl on, a Weber gas BBQ, outdoor dining tables and firepit.
THE SPACE: The farmhouse was newly renovated for summer 2022. Inside, there are five fabulous bedrooms upstairs – two of the rooms are ensuite, another has a William Holland copper bath in the room and an ensuite WC. The final two rooms share a family bathroom with a shower over the bath.
Whichever room is yours, you ’ll have a great night sleep in complete peace and quiet. Three rooms have kingsize beds (with Vispring handmade mattresses), one has a superking (with Millbrook mattress). The final room has two 3ft wide single beds, each with a pull out trundle bed underneath in case extra beds are needed in any of the rooms. If so, let us know and we'll set them up for you.
Downstairs, there’s a sitting room with exposed Tudor beams, working inglenook fireplace and bread oven (whose working days are over!). There’s also a TV room with smart TV and a snug room for reading and board games.
The kitchen is down a set of three ancient foot worn stone stairs. It has all you need to cook meals large or small - electric oven and hob, with a second oven/microwave. Plus 2 dishwashers and a fridge freezers. The kitchen has doors opening onto a south-west facing oak balcony - with views over the valley – as well as onto a patio for outdoor dining. You can watch the sun peep over one side of valley in the morning, and slowly set over the other in the dusk.
SOME HISTORY: There has been a house on the site since the time of the Domesday Book (the owner at that time was listed as Edric the Cripple!) The core of the current house was built in the early or mid 1500s and there are some wonderful features that remain from that time like the oak beams and a beautiful carved Tudor mantel. The house was added to in the 17th and 19th centuries and we converted a barn at the end of the house to make a lovely new light filled kitchen.
THE LOCATION: The farmhouse is set in a secluded valley and has stunning views over the Devon countryside (part of the magical Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty). There is a separate annexe building close to the house (see pictures). This has separate parking and entrance and its own outside space not visible from the house – so it’s designed to provide complete privacy to the farmhouse (listed on VRBO as 'The Old Cow Byre').
