Νιο Horio is a village in the district of Apokoronou. It is located west of the community of Vamos and at a distance of 23 km. from Chania. Famous beaches such as Kalivo, Georgioupolis and Almyrida are a few km away. It has an altitude of 100m. and a population of 530 inhabitants. The village produces enough citrus fruits, oil, wine, pork, beef and mutton. The inhabitants grow olive trees, orange trees, lemon trees, citrus trees, mandarin trees, grapefruit, avocados and vines.
It is reported that the oldest name of the village was Kamares from the many arches that existed.
The village was built before the time of the Turkish occupation, in fact, buildings from the Venetian era have been preserved.
The church of Agios Gerasimos is built inside a cave. Tradition states that the icon of the saint was in another church and every time it was lost the villagers would discover it in the cave. No matter how many times they tried to bring it to the church, the image returned to the cave. They said that Saint Gerasimos passed through the village and stayed in this cave. The villagers, then, built his church in this location.
