The Neighborhood:
Wandering in Chania's old city streets you will find yourself in a time capsule touched by Greeks, Venetians, Turks, Jews and Egyptians. No coincidence since the city of Chania is built on the ruins of ancient Kydonia, founded by Minoas. During the 13th century, the medieval city of Chania was formed by the Venetian conquerors and characterized by Venetian manicism with some Flemish elements.
In 1645 the Turks conquered Chania. The Catholic churches were converted to Mosques and the buildings became more Oriental. In the alleys of the old city, beats a heart of 5,000 years old. In the straits of Topana, amongst 17th and 18th-century Venetian mansions, you will be captivated by the multitude of ornate doors, vibrant colors, plants, mansions, stone balconies, and arches, and you will be lost in the pictures, smells, and flavors with a backdrop of the blue sea color and pink sunsets.
