The village of Plakias is located on the shores of the Libyan Sea. Its name derives from the large stones in the area, known as “plakes” in Greek. Originally a small village in the late 19th century, Plakias has grown over recent decades into a popular resort. During the 1960s, the beaches of Yialia—the beachfront of the wider area—were a favorite destination for hippies. Today, it serves as a vibrant resort and a convenient base for exploring the region’s natural beauty.

Plakias is nestled between two canyons, Kotsifos and Kourtaliotis. The Kourtaliotis River flows through the Kourtaliotiko Gorge, renowned for its dense vegetation and dramatic rock formations on either side. The gorge is a true natural masterpiece and a must-visit for nature lovers.

The village offers a variety of activities, including scuba diving, snorkeling, boat trips, and horse riding.
