Overview

About the property

Reeds Island - - - Exquisite home with the finest Hilo address, a Virginia Brooks McDonald, FAIA, architect-designed home, overlooking the Wailuku River. Brooks is the author of Heating or Cooling Your Building Naturally, Solar Architectural Solutions. The architect relates how vertical ventilation and controlled daylighting--to the exclusion of air-conditioning and daytime electric lighting can be applied. Every space is filled with interesting angles, views and light...and STUNNING views of the river. Enjoy the incredible view from the spacious deck and watch the different moods of the river and the rain forest surrounding you. This home is incredibly private and exceptionally designed for comfort and style, all in one. The master suite is separated on one end of the home featuring a large office and resting area, and a spacious, master bathroom suite, complete with walk-in shower, and Japanese Furo bath room, both overlooking the river. The living room is very spacious with soaring, exposed beam ceilings and open to the kitchen. What a terrific bright and functional space with lots of counter space, a view of the river, pantry and more. The guest bedroom is also very comfortable with its own en suite bathroom and even a mini bar sink. There is also a separate walk-in storage closet and spacious laundry room on this side of the home as well. Additionally, there is an open art studio room with a utility sink and its own side entrance.

Space was well suited for my family of 8. Lots of room.

Beautiful river and waterfall to view at sunset with a cocktail.

Some furnishings need TLC. My daughter was stuck in the couch...support bars were missing under the cushion. Sliding door to balcony was broken and made it difficult to go in and out on the balcony.

Wonderful view and location, but the accommodations lacked

  • 2 of 5

It's a beautiful house in an amazing spot. The river below is awesome (and loud). Plus, it's a great area to explore.

We are a family that loves adventure. However, we found the house very uncomfortable. We've stayed in other jungle locations around the world and this one had more bugs and lizards inside than any house we've stayed in. Although we like the jungle we did want a little more separation from nature. There were literally hundreds of bugs inside... mostly termites. I had to wipe them off all of the beds before sleeping, and mop them up throughout the house. It was hard not to step on them walking through the house. There were also tons of geckos inside (which we didn't mind cause they're cute and they eat the bugs).

Due to the humidity everything is moldy; the cabinets, cupboards, showers, sheets, pillows, fridge, etc.

It was also difficult to make a meal because the small supply of pots and pans were in bad shape.

There is little privacy in the house. We found that you can see into the master bathroom from the bedroom on the other end of the house, and there's no way to block it because there are no curtains.

There is a row of louvered windows across the ceiling that you can't close, and I think a lot of bugs get in through them, even though they have screens.

In summary, it's a cool looking house in a great location, but it needs some tlc.

The house was really dirty. Several fixtures did not work. The pans were in bad conditions.

This house is in poor condition. But the place was well located, near a beautiful fall .

Roaring River Views

  • 4 of 5

Reed's Island is a very interesting and sizable house. We very much enjoyed the open floor plan and space. It was perfect for our family to spend time together and have meals together. The only challenge we had was the weather. We arrived amidst flash flooding, and the river was extremely high, and so loud we couldn't hear each other talking unless we were in the same room. We've never experienced anything like that, so it made our stay in Hilo very unique.

Beautiful view

  • 4 of 5

This home is along a beautiful river with waterfalls just outside your windows! Swimming is not recommended in the river, so don’t risk it.

The house was spacious and served as a good base camp. I would not recommend if you will be spending significant time in the home, as the furniture is not for spending lazy days on. As it is in the forest expect small insects and general humidity and dampness.

It was raining while we visited and were not quite prepared for how that effects the homes in the area.

Great home with beautiful artwork and served as a great place close to downtown Hilo!
