Beautiful village house in centre of Roussillon, private pool, stunning views.

Bedrooms 3
Property type house
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

Village centre, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6) with beautiful views and pool.

Featured in The Sunday Times' 50 Sensational Villas, the house is right in the middle of one of the most famous villages in Provence - Roussillon. Famed for its ochre cliffs and soil, it provides one of the most stunning backdrops to any rental house. While the house is only yards from cafes and restaurants, it offers total privacy and is beautifully quiet inside the house. There is easy parking in the village and in walking distance.

The light on the village is stunning all year round with crisp blue skies and a low-winter sun bringing the ochre colour out in winter to hot sun and a bustling village in summer. Perhaps the two best times of year are spring and autumn.

In spring, Roussillon comes to life with the restaurants and cafes opening onto the pavements and terraces and the Thursday market returning to full force. The weather can be beautiful and the village lovely out of high season.

In autumn the colours are spectacular as the vineyards start to turn to gold and the temperatures still hitting 70 degrees in October.

The house is located just 50m from the market square, a third of a way up into the village on a side street.

The living room opens onto a large terrace ideal for outdoor meals (table for 8) which leads up to a smaller upper terrace (table for 6) which commands beautiful panoramic views across the ochre hills. The swimming pool is a little lower down overlooking the lower terrace; it has a ledge on one side approximately 1.5m from the edge and underwater lighting. It is heated up to 24°C free of charge, weather permitting. There is space for loungers on two sides of the pool - there are 4 sun loungers in total.

The attractive front door opens into the spacious and very attractively furnished living room which in turn opens onto a large terrace to one side and a large dining room/kitchen to the other, also with a terrace. The interior is very personalised with antiques, artwork and has a lovely warm atmosphere. Upstairs are a large double bedroom (150cm bed - overlooking the terrace and pool) with an en suite bathroom with a wc (wonderful views from the bath), two twin bedrooms (the larger one (90cm beds) looks over the street and smaller one (75cm beds) has views of the countryside), a shower room and a separate wc.

The house is also a wonderful place to stay in winter: log fires, beautiful walks in the winter sunshine, few tourists and is very quiet and peaceful. A fabulous Christmas vacation idea!

The three terraces offer a mixture of direct sun and partial shade and there are tables and chairs for outside eating on all three.

The village has several cafes and restaurants ranging from simple meals to some very good cooking indeed. Russell Crowe in fact had a party in one of them, Le Simonde, while filming 'A Good Year' a few years ago. Nearly all the restaurants have lovely views. There is a market in the village on Thursday mornings which has all the Provencal goodies you would expect!

The village also has a good supermarket, Casino, which has pretty much everything one might need. There is also a butcher and a lovely bakery.

Beyond the village there is the local town of Apt which has a fabulous market on Saturday mornings and there is a farmers' market in Coustellet on Sunday mornings. Other local villages worth visiting include Gordes, Bonnieux, Lacoste, Lourmarin and Menerbes. Further away to the east is Avignon, well worth a day trip and only 40 minutes away. To the north there is the mighty Mont Ventoux - one of the highest mountains in Provence, viewable from the village. The drive through Haut-Provence to get there is spectacular. To the south there is the Grand Luberon - well worth a day trip. Aix-en-Provence is the other side of the Luberon and should not be missed.

About Clifford Rosen

Alice and Clifford Rosen bought the house in 2005. It was love at first sight - not just the house but the village as well. Having looked at more than 30 houses in the region over a two year period, Rue des Bourgades was the one for us! Previously owned by an American family it was ideal - a village house with all the local amenities, quiet and spacious inside and easily accessible for long-weekends from London. Indeed, we use it often at weekends during winter, normally once a month as it is so easy to get here.

Whilst we have made some modifications since buying, it was largely as you see it now. An old house it was re-modelled in the late 80's and the pool installed sometime after that. The furniture is a mixture of mine, my late mother-in-law's and some pieces bought here at the famous antique town of Isle sur l'Sorgues. The artwork is a mixture of artist friends' work, my late mother-in law (an artist) and a few purchases.

We live and work in London and take great pride in both our homes. Our London house was featured in 25 Beautiful Houses magazine.

Why Clifford Rosen chose Roussillon

Roussillon is a 3* 'Belle Village du France' and is one of the most beautiful villages in Provence, if not France. The house is right in the middle of the village and has the perfect combination of dramatic views, quiet and private, has a pool and a dozen bars, cafes and restaurants within a very short walk.

What makes this house unique

Everything you could want from a holiday in Provence within walking distance while staying in a beautiful house.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My family and I would like to thank you for a fantastic holiday in your lovely home! The girls enjoyed the beautiful pool and swam virtually everyday. My husband and I enjoyed the gorgeous house, well stocked kitchen and numerous restful places to relax with a glass of wine and a book. We tried practically every restaurant in town and were never disappointed. The surrounding areas of Provence were wonderful to explore, but we could not wait to get home to your house most days. We took cooking classes, while our daughters had riding lessons. We loved the pizza place across the street and the fact that we could send our 8 year old out with a plate to fetch it. As I mentioned in the guest book, we were so thrilled with the decor of the house, we took pictures of every room and are trying to recreate it here in Virginia. Thank you again, everything was perfect and we hope to return very soon.

Best location in Roussillon

  • 5 of 5

Pictures don't do this home justice. It's an incredible location with fantastic indoor and outdoor space. Great way to begin our family vacation. There is so much to see in the area, but Roussillon was our favorite of all the Luberon towns we visited. Master suite is gorgeous with beautiful bathroom. Two other bedrooms have two twin beds each. Kitchen was well equipped, and all our meals were eaten on the upper patio with best view in town. I would love to return and stay longer.

Large house, great location

  • 3 of 5

But some maintenance needed to be done, i.e. Toilet kept running. Also furnishings were pretty shabby and the place could stand a good deep cleaning. It was over priced but the rooms are large and two private courtyards and pool were nice enough. Perfect location for enjoying Roussillon and very quiet and private.

Owner's Response: Many thanks indeed for your feedback, much appreciated. If I may take the points raised in turn. We naturally rely on our guests to inform us of any maintenance issues – if we don’t know about something then it’s rather difficult to fix. Tracking back through our correspondence I see that the toilet running issue in the second bathroom began on your final night and you duly mentioned it then. It was fixed the next day. Re the furnishings: The house is largely furnished with family antiques and heirlooms plus local acquisitions all of which we feel complement the house. I would not exactly call them shabby, but neither is everything new of course. Some, such as our beautiful kitchen armoire, were purchased in Isle sur l’Sorgues, famed for its antique furniture. Finally, we take the cleaning very seriously and do a regular deep clean however we have since increased the frequency – thank you for pointing this out and also for taking the time to review. All best wishes, Clifford

Georgous home in the middle of a georgous hill-town in Provence

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful home in the middle of Roussillion, comfortable with lots of room and charm. The Rosens were a wonderful set of hosts, taking the extra steps to communicate and insure our stay was comfortable and free of unnecessary surprises or hassles. Lots of room for three couples to share appetizers on the streetside upper patio, dinners in the courtyard, or a dip in the deep pool. Local merchants were friendly and welcoming, and we developed a personal relationship with several as the week went by. The town itself, is charming with beautiful architecture and stunning ochre rock formations, not to mention the vineyards in the valleys all around. We visited several nearby hill towns and wouldn't trade Roussillion for any of them.

A wonderful house in a wonderful village

  • 5 of 5

The experience of walking in to Clifford and Alice's house was as refreshing as the experience of going out of it each day to see the beautiful view and enjoy the very sweet town of Roussillon. Cliifford and Alice were very good hosts, meeting us before our stay on skyoe and providing us with detailed knowledge of what we needed to do to enjoy our stay there. There were also very responsive to any of our requests for further help and invitation. One complaint is that we could have had slightly clearer directions about where the house was since there are no numbers (it took us a while to locate it - but maybe we forgot something they told us in person). All in all - when we sum up our stay there, we say -"what a lovely house, what a lovely town to be in while also visiting the many beautiful neighboring villages close by. It was a great experience. Thanks to both Clifford and Alice. Jane Ariel

An excellent 8 week stay at Chez Rosen- this beautiful home in Roussillon

  • 5 of 5

After a year of planning we chose this village and home for an extended 8 week stay in May/June of this year. Both were perfect for us and our guests. The location of the house is excellent. Several restaurants, a small grocery, ATM, butcher, and bread shop are within walking distance. The house was charming, nicely restored, and filled with historic character inside and out. The outdoor areas include a lovely courtyard with table/chairs canopied with a magnificent grape vine providing shade on the sunny afternoons. Above, there is a sunny upper terrace – with a pool and additional elevated seating terrace with table and chairs commanding beautiful views of the village, Luberon Valley, and the stunning ochre cliffs. Sunsets spent at this table sipping wine and eating dinners are our most cherished memories.

Inside, the living room is spacious and elegantly appointed with magnificent old, timber ceiling beams and a large fireplace. The kitchen is quaint and well-stocked, with its own access to yet another small outdoor area. The bedrooms upstairs were nice, especially the large master bedroom with its own bath. This bath has a huge picture window with dramatic views – gorgeous. The home is historic, I believe dating back to the 1500s, but in very good shape. It had everything we needed to be quite happy while feeling like we were somewhere very special. Several guests visited us, and they all marveled at the location, the view from the upper terrace, and the historic charm of the home. We were very comfortable here as were our guests.

Our selection of Roussillon as a base was ideal. Other villages in Provence are also beautiful but often extremely quiet and with no activity. Roussillon is a quaint, lovely village with an energetic local and tourist presence. We liked that combination. During the day, Roussillon was vibrant and fun- especially on Thursday market day. There were things to see and do, and you felt you were in “the place to be”. Late in the day, the town would take on a serenity and peacefulness would surround you. It was wonderful in the evenings to walk to dinners along the charming old lanes. Roussillon was ideal for visits to nearby villages like Gordes, Goult, Murs, Bonnieux, Menerbes, and St Sauternin les Apt.

The owners (Clifford and Alice) were very accommodating/responsive- kind and helpful throughout the planning process and during our 8 week stay. We would definitely choose Roussillon and this home again.

This was by far our most relaxing and enjoyable holiday in Provence. A delightful house in a most picturesque village. In fact the house was so welcoming and comfortable it was difficult to leave. Excellent restaurants - Davids and Le Piquebaure in particular, as well as friendly locals enhanced our visit even more. Our hosts Clifford and Alice were delightful and always available via phone, which was most appreciated when a sudden storm knocked out the electricity. We will return.

This year-round location is a perfect base for discovering the real Provence. Roussillon is a 3* Belle Village du France and it's not hard to see why. Famous for the striking red ochre cliffs, there's much to discover on foot from the house.

The ochre trail, lasting an hour or so, from the heart of the village is a must-do. There are numerous shops selling local products and there is strong representation of artists' materials.

Outside the village there are many walks to do and of course, other villages to explore. Bonnieux, Menerbes, Lacoste (home to the Marquis de Sade), Lourmarin and Gordes are all worth visiting. Each village also has it's market day - the Roussillon market is on Thursday mornings.

Further afield the cities of Aix-en-Provence, Avignon, Orange, Arles, Nimes and Marseille are all within a hour and a half and do-able as day trips. To the north there are also the famous vineyards of the Southern Rhone including Chateuneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas and Vacqueyras though our local vineyards are also worth a visit. You can taste wine at all of them and maybe buy a little to bring back home.

The house is perfectly positioned in the heart of Roussillon with spectacular views from the terrace and master bedroom and yet even though we are in the middle of the village, the house is quite private at the same time. And unusually for such a centrally placed house, we have a pool.

There are about a dozen bars, cafes and restaurants within a short walk some with great views, some with very good cooking - and one with both!
