Known as the “Capital of the Peak,” Chapel-en-le-Frith is a historic market town in the High Peak. Founded around a chapel built in 1225 by foresters of the Royal Forest of the Peak, the town blends medieval heritage with modern village life.
Visitors can explore the 13th century Church of St Thomas Becket, where Scottish soldiers were imprisoned during the Civil War, and stroll through the Market Place with its ancient stocks and its cross.
It is also home to the stone cottages of Church Brow. This steep, cobbled street is described in a town brochure as “Chapel’s answer to Gold Hill in Dorset, famous for the Hovis ads." The church bells ring on Tuesday and Sunday, adding to the village’s charm.
Nearby Eccles Pike, with its pink gritstone summit, offers 360 degree views. Just seven miles away is the spa town of Buxton, celebrated for its spring water, Pavilion Gardens, and the Victorian Opera House, which hosts shows attracting visitors from around the globe.
A short drive will take you to attractions including the stately homes of Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, and Lyme Hall. The Goyt Valley and Castleton are known for their caverns, such as Blue John, Speedwell, and the Devil’s Arse.
Chinley is a village on the western edge of the Peak District National Park, popular with walkers for trails over Cracken Edge, linking to Chinley Churn, Mount Famine, and South Head. The village offers pubs with award-winning ales, cafes, and restaurants.
The village of Combs boasts a country pub known for its quality ingredients, making it the perfect spot for a meal after exploring Combs Moss and Castle Naze.
Hayfield, on the north-western edge of the Peak District National Park, was the setting for the BBC’s period drama “The Village" and is popular with walkers due to its proximity to Kinder Scout. Serious hikers head east to the Kinder Plateau, Pennine Way, and Snake Path, while families and those preferring gentler walks can enjoy the Set Valley Trail towards New Mills.
