For those keen on coastal adventures, the Cumbrian coast offers hidden gems like the beaches at St Bees or the Edwardian town of Whitehaven once an entry point for the import of Rum and slaves to the UK in the 1700’s and is the start of the C2C cycle route. The house is right on the famous Wainright’s Coast to Coast walk, (an ideal first spot to rest up on a staged journey) which stretches from St. Bees, then east to Robin Hood’s Bay in Yorkshire. Nearby Cockermouth is the birthplace of William and Dorothy Wordsworth here and the Roman port of Maryport offers an array of shops and cafes and a rich history to explore. The cottage is an hour’s drive north to the Scottish border, Hadrian’s Wall, and the town of GretnaGreen.
After a day of adventure, treat yourself to a hearty meal at one of the popular country pubs, serving excellent traditional food and real ales. Whether you’re here for outdoor pursuits, or to relax or have fun with the kids on the Ravenglass mountain railway for example, Coast to Cottage provides the ideal base for your West Lake District getaway.
