Step into a fairy tale at Hen Wrych Hall Tower, a unique and romantic hideaway just a five-minute stroll from the sweeping coastline of North Wales. This Grade II* listed castellated gate tower is nestled within the original curtain wall of the Grade I listed Gwrych Castle and overlooks the 500-year-old Hen Wrych Hall—once home to poet Felicia Hemans, known for her famous verse The Boy Stood on the Burning Deck.
The tower is perfectly located for exploring the region, with local pubs, restaurants, and shops just a mile away. Scenic woodland and hillside walks are easily accessible, and nearby attractions include golf courses, the spectacular Bodnant Gardens, historic Conwy, several impressive castles, and the Victorian seaside charm of Llandudno—all within a short drive.
Inside, Hen Wrych Hall Tower offers a blend of historical charm and comfort. The cosy ground floor living area is the perfect spot to unwind, complete with a large stone fireplace with a wood burning stove for colder evenings (in addition to full central heating). A hand-carved mahogany staircase leads to the first-floor Victorian-style bathroom, featuring a luxuriously deep slipper bath and an original Thomas Crapper toilet cistern—testament to the tower's attention to period detail.
On the second floor, the bedroom is a true showpiece, with a grand Elizabethan-style, king-size four-poster bed, richly carved and full of character—an ideal setting for a romantic retreat.
Built around 1822, the tower and its associated features were designed by Lord and Lady Bamford Hesketh alongside renowned architect and theorist Thomas Rickman. The ground floor still showcases one of Rickman's original gothic cast iron windows, while the original wooden front door bears faint carvings of historic sailing ships—possibly etched by Napoleonic prisoners of war.
Painstakingly restored by the current owners in collaboration with Conwy's conservation team, the tower retains rare architectural elements including a camber-headed doorway and an original bread oven. A custom metal window was also commissioned to complement Rickman's original design.
Hen Wrych Hall Tower is a one-of-a-kind period property, rich in history and full of charm—an unforgettable romantic escape by the sea.

Lovely quirky 'castle' in a great location for visiting all the attractions of North Wales
Lovely quirky 'castle' in a great location for visiting all the attractions of North Wales. Was comfortable and exactly as described. Friendly hosts and beautifully decorated. The only downside was the outside seating area was a bit bare and there was a fair bit of noise from traffic on the other side of the wall, but other than that a great base to explore the area.

We had a wonderful 8 night stay at The Tower
We had a wonderful 8 night stay at The Tower. It’s beautiful inside, with fitting period decor. We loved it, it’s almost like being in a real castle. Personally I felt we got a lot for our money. It has a very welcoming and warm atmosphere as soon as you walk in. Great for a break and ideal for a romantic getaway. We’d stay again Thanks for hosting us this past week.

Amazing Castle Retreat
Amazing castle retreat . Home from home: cheese grater to ironing board!! Lovely welcome basket with red and white wine, tea bags, jam, chocolate biscuits, vase of flowers and milk in the fridge. We plan to return every year, forever!!! Abergele has every eatery available and lovely country pubs. Even the weather behaved for us.

Lovely Little Getaway
The tower was absolutely beautiful. Unfortunately the weather let us down to explore Abergele, but we had no issue spending most of our time cosy in the tower. The bed was extremely comfy and the bath was amazing. Tesco is just around the corner to grab any additional bits and there’s plenty of pubs for some “pub grub”. The hosts were extremely welcoming and we felt like we had lots of privacy. My only regret is that I didn’t book a longer stay. I would recommend Hen Wrych Hall Tower to anyone who loves a unique and cosy stay. Thank you guys!

“A Fairytale Tower Stay – History, Warmth, and a Touch Of Magic
Our stay at the tower was nothing short of enchanting – the kind of experience that lingers in your memory long after you’ve returned home. From the moment we stepped inside, the soft strains of classical music welcomed us, as well as Pea and Dave’s friendly welcome. Waiting for us were thoughtful treats – a bottle of wine, fresh flowers, coffee, milk and jars of preserves – the perfect introduction to a place where generosity and attention to detail are woven into every moment.
The tower itself is a masterpiece of atmosphere. Its period features have been lovingly preserved, telling silent stories of another age, while the crackling wood-burning stove wraps the rooms in a gentle, golden glow. The four-poster bed was simply stunning – a statement piece as much as a sanctuary – and the bath, deep and inviting, felt like an indulgent retreat all its own.
It’s a place where time seems to slow, where each corner reveals a new detail to admire, and where comfort and charm walk hand in hand. As a bonus, guests are encouraged to visit The Peculiar Gallery in Abergele, owned by the talented Pea, whose work you can take home at a special discount – the perfect memento of a truly special escape.
The tower is more than just accommodation it’s an experience, a little slice of history, and a place where hospitality feels genuine and heartfelt. For anyone seeking beauty, warmth, and a touch of magic, it’s simply unforgettable.
Would prefer to have the reminder text sent the evening before regarding check out as the 7am text message woke us with a start!
