This 1926 Gullah Cottage located on Daufuskie Island in the historic district has been restored with preserved character and charm. The home was originally built in 1926 for Amelia Bently and after her death in 1961 was passed on to her two daughters Helen and Josephine. The house remained uninhabited from 1960-1986, when it was restored. This is the perfect rental for a couple or small family who wish to escape and get away from it all. Daufuskie has sprawling oaks, marshes, and beautiful serene beaches where you may actually find yourself alone. There are mostly dirt roads and travel is by golf cart. Activities are endless and include golf, fishing, kayaking, “beaching”, hanging at the marina, horseback riding, visiting the community farm, garden, or historical sites, and simply relaxing! There are a number of games at the cottage as well. There is no road or bridge to Daufuskie so you must ferry or boat over. Getting to Daufuskie is half of the fun! The cottage rental includes an electric golf cart with your stay. Old Daufuskie Crab Company and Lucy Bell's are great places to grab a meal when you don’t want to cook! If you decide to prepare your meals, the kitchen is equipped, but come prepared from the mainland as there is no true grocery store on Daufuskie. There are a couple of general stores, but hours are limited. Our family fell in love with Gullah history and felt drawn to the 1926 cottage when searching for a property on the island. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
Getting to Daufuskie is definitely part of the adventure. We recommend the Daufuskie Island Ferry if the times of travel coordinate with your schedule (research and arrive on time!). Private charters are also available from Hilton Head, Savannah, or Bluffton. ***Reservations for land transportation from the marina to the cottage are available. ***
Ground transportation can be arranged at:
It’s about $20/person round trip.
We will be happy to assist and make recommendations so that some of the challenges unique to the island do not become bumps in your road to adventure and relaxation!
We recommend the official Daufuskie Island Ferry if you are coming from the HHI/Bluffton area. Their website is very informative regarding cost, directions, and times of arrival and departure.
****Frequently asked questions.*****
*****How do we get to Daufuskie?
By ferry, water taxi, or private boat. There are a few ferries to choose from.
From Hilton Head Island there are 2 ferries to choose from.
We usually take the Daufuskie Island Ferry, ( ), they have 4 round trips daily and 5 round trips on Friday. It costs $35 per person round trip. They leave from Buckingham Landing in Hilton Head, and deliver you to the Melrose Landing. You can park your car at Buckingham landing for $10 per night. The trip takes 45-50 minutes. They have a very informative website, that will answer all of your questions.
The Delta Lady Ferry also departs from Hilton Head's Broad Creek docks. ( ) They run 2 round trips daily. They can help facilitate tours, rides, and additional golf cart rentals. They too, have an informative website.
Water Taxi service is also an option
From Savannah, Bull River's water taxi is an option. ( ).
From Hilton Head, May River Excursions is an option ( )
***** If we bring our own boat, is there a transient dock?
Yes, Freeport marina has overnight tie ups available. They charge per foot. During the day, it is free if you dine or drink there.
*****How do we get from the arrival dock to the cottage?
Even though we encourage you to use our golf cart while on the island, it is NOT available at the dock to transport you to the cottage on arrival, or transport you back to the dock at check out. It must be left at the cottage, charging, awaiting the next guest. Therefore, we recommend calling Daufuskie Transit at (843) 338-2570 or emailing them at daufuskietransit@ They will be awaiting you at the dock, with a van towing a cargo trailer, piloted by a VERY knowledgable and courteous driver. He will transport you to the cottage, and pick you up on your departure day, returning you to the departure dock. During the ride, he provide you with a wealth of information to make your stay even more enjoyable.
*****What can we bring on the ferry?
If you can carry it, it will ride for free. They have large carts for heavier or bulky items (big coolers, etc) that you can rent, and they will help you load.
*****How far is it from the arrival dock to the cottage?
About 3-4 miles. Not very walkable. You can bring a bicycle on the ferry and bike to the cottage, but there are many poorly marked dirt roads, and it would be a sandy, potentially muddy, challenging ride. The weather can be unpredictable. We still recommend Daufuskie Transit.
*****What should we bring?
Bug spray is a must, bottled water, groceries (remember, no grocery store on island), sunscreen.
*****Do you have beach chairs?
We have 4 beach chairs for you to use.
*****How far is the beach from the cottage?
It is a very scenic 5 minute golf cart ride.
*****What time can I arrive?
Check in is at 4:00 PM and check out is at 11:00 AM

About Michelle Babb
We live in Florence, South Carolina and look forward to getting to Daufuskie as often as we can. We aren't able to make it to the island as often as we'd like due to work, school and life in general, so we look forward to sharing it with new visitors, and experienced islanders alike! We are in the process of continuing to update and restore the cottage. We hope you'll visit repeatedly and watch the progress.
Michelle Babb purchased this House in 2017
Why Michelle Babb chose Daufuskie Island
The cottage spoke to us the first time we rented it. We loved the history and relaxed feel of the property. Slowing down to island time, leaving our cell phones behind, and setting out on new adventures is so much fun! We can't wait to share the cottage with our family and friends, and meet new people who will surely love Daufuskie as much as we do.
What makes this House unique
The cottage rental includes the use of our electric golf cart during your stay. Typically these must be rented separately, but we feel this allows our guests to freely explore the island on their own schedule and maximize their visit.

This cottage is a charmer!
Our mini vacation was more than I expected! The cottage is really quaint and romantic and thank you so much for including a golf cart, really simplifies things! Michelle is a great host and responds very quickly! Really can’t wait to stay again.
Relaxing, fun and wonderful experience!
Such a hidden gem this place! Loved everything about the quaint and cozy cottage. The island is so full of history. The owners of this adorable cottage are absolutely awesome, and so very accommodating. This was such a wonderful experience for my family. The beaches are so beautiful. The shells, Sand Dollars, Jellyfish and dolphins were added bonus. Loved it!
Peace and Quiet
Love everything about this cottage
Absolutely amazing cozy and comfortable cottage, immaculately clean
This historic character of this cottage is perfectly representative of the beautiful island of Daufuskie. But the amenities are fully modern and comfortable. Even though it was below 40 degrees outside when we arrived 12/29/17 our host, Michelle, made sure that we were met with a perfectly warmed interior! There is much more room inside than what you would expect from the exterior photos. The bathroom is surprisingly spacious, which is rare in historic cottages. Both bedrooms have plenty of space and the most comfortable bedding and pillows I have experienced in any VRBO property.
We cooked most of our meals in the well-stocked kitchen that offered many pots, pans, dishes, full sized oven, stove and refrigerator. The living area offers plenty of comfy seating, a sofa and dining table. Having the golf cart included makes travel around the island convenient, comfortable and easy. The cart had a weather cover, which was much appreciated during the windy, cold days during our stay.
The wooded area surrounding the cottage made for a much needed quiet and peaceful stay. Other than one other golf cart spotted only a few times during our stay, there was no other "traffic" in the area.
Our host, Michelle, was a pleasure to work with. She responded to all emails and text messages in a timely manner and offered helpful information about the cottage, golf cart and the island in general. As someone fortunate enough to have visited Daufuskie for the past 30 years, I can say that 1926 Gullah Cottage made this visit very enjoyable.
I highly recommend this cottage and will certainly look forward to my next stay. This one gets 5 out of 5 stars. Thank you, Michelle, for your wonderful property.
Thank you so much for your wonderful review and your appreciation of our cottage! We are excited to share it with people who appreciate it the way we do! We are continuing renovations this winter and can’t wait for you to come again to check out how much it has progressed next time. Hopefully the island weather will be a little nicer next time!
Amazing Cottage on a Beautiful Island!
We absolutely loved our stay at this cottage! It has new owners who have updated it while keeping its unique charm!
The cottage is not huge but uses space well. The two bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen, living room, dining area, and game room provide more than enough space for us to spread out, with little storage areas to make sure our stuff was out of the way.
The island is so private and beautiful. The ferry was easy to use, we got on an off the island so quickly and with out a hitch. The owners gave us some great recommendations for places to visit and eat. The island has several amazing restaurants, we tried Lucy Bells and Marshside Mamas, both were exceptional. The island also has a store with limited groceries and supplies, so plan on bringing what you need. The beach was so clean and quiet, there were untouched shells and sand dollars everywhere! After a full day out and about we were looking forward to spending time relaxing. We put in a movie and didn't even make it 15 minutes before falling asleep on the daybed/couch. After traveling for about a week we both agreed that the master bed was the most comfortable we had slept in.
We woke up the next morning to have coffee on the porch and couldn't believe how serene the cottage and island were. We will definitely be back!
The beauty and spirit of Daufuskie is overwhelming. You don't find Daufuskie, Daufuskie finds you. Friendly people, beautiful scenery, secluded spots and unspoiled wonders abound. We hope you will enjoy the island as much as we do!
