This 1926 Gullah Cottage located on Daufuskie Island in the historic district has been restored with preserved character and charm. The home was originally built in 1926 for Amelia Bently and after her death in 1961 was passed on to her two daughters Helen and Josephine. The house remained uninhabited from 1960-1986, when it was restored. This is the perfect rental for a couple or small family who wish to escape and get away from it all. Daufuskie has sprawling oaks, marshes, and beautiful serene beaches where you may actually find yourself alone. There are mostly dirt roads and travel is by golf cart. Activities are endless and include golf, fishing, kayaking, “beaching”, hanging at the marina, horseback riding, visiting the community farm, garden, or historical sites, and simply relaxing! There are a number of games at the cottage as well. There is no road or bridge to Daufuskie so you must ferry or boat over. Getting to Daufuskie is half of the fun! The cottage rental includes an electric golf cart with your stay. Old Daufuskie Crab Company and Lucy Bell's are great places to grab a meal when you don’t want to cook! If you decide to prepare your meals, the kitchen is equipped, but come prepared from the mainland as there is no true grocery store on Daufuskie. There are a couple of general stores, but hours are limited. Our family fell in love with Gullah history and felt drawn to the 1926 cottage when searching for a property on the island. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
Getting to Daufuskie is definitely part of the adventure. We recommend the Daufuskie Island Ferry if the times of travel coordinate with your schedule (research and arrive on time!). Private charters are also available from Hilton Head, Savannah, or Bluffton. ***Reservations for land transportation from the marina to the cottage are available. ***
Ground transportation can be arranged at:
It’s about $20/person round trip.
We will be happy to assist and make recommendations so that some of the challenges unique to the island do not become bumps in your road to adventure and relaxation!
We recommend the official Daufuskie Island Ferry if you are coming from the HHI/Bluffton area. Their website is very informative regarding cost, directions, and times of arrival and departure.

By ferry, water taxi, or private boat. There are a few ferries to choose from.
From Hilton Head Island there are 2 ferries to choose from.
We usually take the Daufuskie Island Ferry. They have 4 round trips daily and 5 round trips on Friday. It costs $35 per person round trip. They leave from Buckingham Landing in Hilton Head, and deliver you to the Melrose Landing. You can park your car at Buckingham landing for $10 per night. The trip takes 45-50 minutes. They have a very informative website, that will answer all of your questions.

From Hilton Head, May River Excursions is an option ( )
***** If we bring our own boat, is there a transient dock?
Yes, Freeport marina has overnight tie ups available. They charge per foot. During the day, it is free if you dine or drink there.
*****How do we get from the arrival dock to the cottage?
Even though we encourage you to use our golf cart while on the island, it is NOT available at the dock to transport you to the cottage on arrival, or transport you back to the dock at check out. It must be left at the cottage, charging, awaiting the next guest. We recommend and use Daufuskie Island Transit. They will be awaiting you at the dock, with a van towing a cargo trailer, piloted by a VERY knowledgable and courteous driver. He will transport you to the cottage, and pick you up on your departure day, returning you to the departure dock. During the ride, he provide you with a wealth of information to make your stay even more enjoyable.
*****What can we bring on the ferry?
If you can carry it, it will ride for free. They have large carts for heavier or bulky items (big coolers, etc) that you can rent, and they will help you load.
*****How far is it from the arrival dock to the cottage?
About 3-4 miles. Not very walkable. You can bring a bicycle on the ferry and bike to the cottage, but there are many poorly marked dirt roads, and it would be a sandy, potentially muddy, challenging ride. The weather can be unpredictable. We still recommend Daufuskie Transit.
*****What should we bring?
Bug spray is a must, bottled water, groceries (remember, no grocery store on island), sunscreen.
*****Do you have beach chairs?
We have 4 beach chairs for you to use.
*****How far is the beach from the cottage?
It is a very scenic 5 minute golf cart ride.
*****What time can I arrive?
Check in is at 4:00 PM and check out is at 11:00 AM
