Region: The ultimate in “year-round” appeal, the Peak District offers countryside, picturesque villages and magnificent scenery. It touches upon six counties and encloses 555 square miles of open moorland, flowing rivers, and wooded dales.
Town: Oakwood Marina is a narrow boat marina situated on the outskirts of the bustling town of Northwitch, Ceshire. Oakwood Marina rests on a scenic inlet of the Trent and Mersey Canal, close to the market town of Northwich in central Cheshire. Set within a rural setting, the marina offers a relaxed waterside base, complete with a café open throughout the year and a seasonal outdoor bar during the summer months. Boating facilities include toilets, showers, washing machines, tumble dryers, and Elsan waste disposal, making it well-equipped for visitors staying on or near the water.
The surrounding area offers a variety of walking routes, including gentle strolls into Northwich and to the Anderton Boat Lift, one of the “Seven Wonders of the Waterways”. Further routes lead to the River Weaver and Vale Royal locks, as well as the parkland at Marbury Country Park, offering plenty of opportunities to explore the local scenery. Northwich itself is a thriving town within the Cheshire Plains, offering a selection of shops, pubs, and places to eat. It also provides easy access to a range of attractions including Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre, the Roman city of Chester with its cathedral and zoo, and Tatton Park. Historic sites such as Beeston and Peckforton Castles, as well as Arley Hall and Gardens, can be reached within a short drive, alongside Oulton Park Motor Racing Circuit for those seeking something more fast-paced. The area has a rich heritage tied to the Trent and Mersey Canal, which opened in 1777 to transport goods between the Midlands and the River Mersey. Northwich played a key role in the salt industry, with mining dating back to Roman times, and this past can still be explored through local landmarks. Visitors can discover more at the Lion Salt Works Museum, the Anderton Boat Lift and Visitor Centre, and Weaver Hall Museum and Workhouse, all offering insight into the town’s industrial and cultural history. Oakwood Marina near Northwich provides a well-placed base for enjoying canal-side walks, local history, and a variety of attractions across Cheshire.
