Beyond the harbour wall, the beach is backed by family-friendly amusements. Make time to explore the Ramsgate Tunnels, a subterranean system used to shelter 60,000 people during WWII air raids. Keen walkers and cyclists can follow the Viking Coastal Trail, which runs along the coastline from Ramsgate to Herne Bay, taking in the pretty town of Margate (5 miles), famous for its Turner Contemporary Gallery. Alternatively, visit Broadstairs (2 miles) to discover its connections to Charles Dickens. For a spot of retail therapy, Westwood Cross (2 miles) has over 40 shops, plus dining and entertainment venues.

Inside, this fabulous three-bedroomed abode boasts chic, cosmopolitan styling and plenty of space for any group of six. A door at the other end of the courtyard opens onto what would once have been the service lane for the terrace and is now a pretty area with garden seating and seasonal planting.
