One of a kind get-a-way

  • 5 of 5

This home provides such a unique experience of both modern living and the outdoors. Its secluded enough as a get-a-way, but close to everything the Gorge has to offer. We've visited it with in-laws and kids as well as alone as a couple and it served all wonderfully.

Uniquely modern mountain hideaway

  • 5 of 5

My family of three, along with another family of three, had the opportunity to spend a long ski weekend in the Neal Creek house. It was the perfect configuration for our time there. Two bedrooms with two separate nooks for the kiddos. It's situated on a quiet road off the highway between Hood River and Mt. Hood. The space is well thought out and wonderfully designed. We live in Portland and even in the summer on bike rides around the Hood River area, I take people down the road to see the house. It's that stunning. There aren't that many opportunities to stay in an affordable place that's been featured in the New York Times, as well as coffee table books and various blogs. Highly, highly recommended.

Can't wait to come back! Beautiful

  • 5 of 5

Wow, where to begin! What an amazing space. Our family of four loved this house. Every detail has been thought out from the sleeper car nooks for the kids to cuddle up in to the well appointed kitchen. Even the reading material is well curated for a great get away weekend. So far we have stayed in the summer, fall and spring. This house has been great for all three. In the summer, after a day of hiking, a relaxing evening around the fire pitied is amazing. And in the spring, what a great place to curl up with a book and loose yourself. And the fall, with days spent apple picking and leaf peeping, there is no better place to lay your head. We can't wait to see what the winter brings since it is so close to a great ski mountain. The town of Hood River is a great place to explore near by. Really can't say enough about this amazing place. It is a small house that never once seams small. Maybe it's the enormous windows or the thoughtful design. What ever it is we love it and look forward to come back again and again. Thank you for sharing this wonderful piece of architecture with us.

Disappointing

  • 1 of 5

I was so excited to stay in what was advertised as a modern, beautiful, architechtually unique vacation rental in the Hood River produce & wine region, but was very disappointed upon arrival. The pictures of this property are deceiving, in that the house itself is RIGHT on the road. The description of the home and only outdoor picture leads you to believe that perhaps it is somewhat private ("on 2 acres of lush creekside property. Plenty of secure storage for gear, and panoramic views of the Neal Creek Valley") which it is not. The boasted acreage is all behind the house.

The home was not cleaned before we arrived: the trash and recycling cans were in the middle of the parking space, there was laundry piled up on the washing machine, the beds were all dirty with massive amounts of hair in and on them, the bathroom was thoroughly used, EVERYTHING was dirty.... The worst part of all was the baseboards and the couch: There was old food, hair, hair, and more hair, and CARPET BEETLE LARVAE! These kinds of things do not accumulate over night, or even during a long stay. There was hair on the dining table, the small appliances and dishes on the shelves were dirty, there was a pot holder covered in food, trash cans with waste in them and massive dead bug & dust build up on everything. This place had not been well cleaned in all too long.

The property management company handling my reservation immediately responded to my complaints, but after a long drive with two hungry babies, there was no way I was waiting around for housecleaners. I was too turned off by the condition of the home to stay, no matter what. My reservation fee was refunded without fuss, but I have to note that it was insisted that the house had been cleaned recently, when in fact this kind of filth takes a fair amount of time to accumulate. This experience was more than disappointing to us: what a waste of our getaway time. I hope this house has been seriously deep cleaned and new cleaners hired since then.

Owner's Response: I am very sorry to hear that you a had negative experience at our house. It sounds like the renters before you left the house fairly messy, and the management agency dropped the ball on the house cleaning. I am glad to hear that the rental agency was quick to respond to your complaint. For the record, this is the first house cleaning complaint we have had in 7 1/2 years. Also, since your visit at the house we have changed to a new agency that has a deeper pool of cleaners and an on-call maintenance crew. Regarding the house property, it is true that the house is located on a quiet, dead-end residential road. The house DOES sit on a wooded, 2 acre parcel on Neal creek. The house has full height windows that DO have a 180 degree panoramic view of the Neal creek valley. That view is very private as there is only one house within view, across the creek, that is completely hidden by trees April through October. You can see more pictures of the house on the architect's (Paul Mckean architecture) website.

Wonderful retreat!

  • 5 of 5

This house is such a special treat. It’s so smartly designed, modern, bright and clean. Our kids love the beds off the hallway with sliding doors that create cozy nooks. From the living/dining area it feels like you are in a floating glass box surrounded by trees. The location is very convenient to everything Hood River – about 10 minutes to downtown Hood River or to the market in Odell, and close to a bunch of wineries. And there are nice walks right from the house along Neal Creek. Our family has stayed here in the spring of 2012 and 2013 and we hope to make it an annual retreat. If you’ve ever wanted to experience a Dwell-type house, this is a great opportunity!

we also recommend a visit to Marchesi Winery--especially on a nice day when you can relax on the outdoor patio.
