Mirror Lake Retreat - Walk to Town!
Welcome to Maison Rouge! This is a proper mid-century lake house with a smart layout, real privacy, and a tranquil vibe. It’s tucked into the trees on the shores of Mirror Lake with a wraparound deck, fire pit, and plenty of room for everyone to breathe. When you want to venture into town, we're only a three-minute drive to downtown Highlands. Or if you prefer to walk, a trail through the woods passes the Bascom art museum and leads to downtown Highlands - only about a one mile walk.
The Space: Reminiscent of a quaint Swiss chalet, “Maison Rouge” has been in the same family since the residence was built in 1965. Situated on a private lakefront wooded acre of lush rhododendrons, dogwoods, azaleas, and pine trees, this waterfront home has enviable unobstructed views of Mirror Lake.
The Home: The cottage features 4 bedrooms and 3 full baths. There are a total of 6 beds: 1 King and 1 Queen on the 1st floor, and 4 Twin beds on the 2nd floor. Both second floor bedrooms have charming balconies, one of which overlooks Mirror Lake. Each bedroom has its own look and feel, but all of them are quiet, comfortable, and well-lit.
Bed/Bath Configuration: There are two bedrooms on the main level. "The Egyptian" master bedroom has a king-sized pillow-top mattress and "The Oriental" guest bedroom has a queen-sized medium-firm mattress. There is one full bath shared by the two bedrooms.
The upper level has two bedrooms, "The Lakeview" and "The Cullasaja". with one full bath in between the two bedrooms. Each upper level bedroom has two twin beds and access to a small balcony-one overlooking Cullasaja Drive, and the other overlooking the lake. There is one full bath shared by the two bedrooms.
The Main Floor Galley Kitchen: The main galley kitchen is fully equipped with under-cabinet lighting, oven/range, dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker, toaster oven, glassware, mixer blender, a complete set of fine china, cutlery, as well as bake-ware, pots, pans, a stock pot, and a few pieces of great-grandmother's 100 year-old seasoned cast iron cookware--including cornbread pans.
The Living Room: The living room has a gas-fired stacked-stone fireplace and opens to a wrap-around deck--perfect for morning coffee, lounging, or sunbathing on a clear day. There's speedy Internet, and the house is wired for cable throughout. The living room also features a flat-screen TV, DVD/VHS player, and a CD player with AM/FM radio.
The Lower Level: The lower level has an open family room with fully-applianced entertainment kitchen, gas fireplace, flat-screen TV, and laundry facilities. The powder room has an adjoining walk-in shower with resting bench and hand-held rainforest shower head. A terrace with Weber "sear" gas grill, and dining table (seats 6) is also on the lower level. Two rocking chairs and alto wind chimes enhance the experience of peaceful lake breezes.
Pets: We are pet friendly and allow ONE dog, with a $175.00 pet fee.
Yard: There’s a nice grassy lakeside area that's great for play or lawn games, and there is also a small boat, fire pit, and plenty of Adirondack style chairs. Chairs are stacked under the deck, so use them as you need them.
The Boat: There is a flat bottomed boat (life jackets and paddles are located in the storage room). Fishing is catch and release. Fishing licenses can be purchased at Reeve's Ace Hardware on Main Street.
Parking: The gravel driveway has a gentle slope and has room for four to five cars. Parking is single-file, back-to-back.
Security Measures: For your safety and security, there are two exterior video cameras. One camera overlooks the driveway. The second camera covers the boat only. The cameras are not actively monitored.
Neighborhood Amenities: A wonderful in-ground swimming pool (open year-round) is located at the Highlands Recreation Park and Civic Center, 600 North 4th Street. Family swimming, water aerobics, and lap swimming are available. Tennis and pickle ball courts, weight lifting, fitness room, and indoor basketball courts are also available. Individual and family day passes are a small fee. The recreation center is within walking distance following the Greenway trail maps.
Walk to Town: The "Highlands Plateau Greenway" maintains a network of beautiful and continuous walking paths that connect the natural settings and historic sites of Highlands. The trail starts right at Mirror Lake and connects through downtown Highlands without needing to walk on busy roads.
The forests offer refreshing alternatives to the town streets for foot travel between points of interest, What sets the Highlands Greenway apart from other trails is the unique environmental features. The trail system is superimposed, with opportunities for recreation, education on natural history, art, and conservation. The Greenway connects established trail systems within the Town, allowing users to visit sites of special interest without the use of motorized vehicles. [Donated land tracts are owned by the Greenway Partners: The Town of Highlands, Highlands Biological Station, Highlands-Cashiers Land Trust, and the Bascom Center for the Visual Arts.]
You're going to love the magic here. A truly private and special find!

This was the most well equipped rental we have ever had! So clean and cute. I can tell the owners took such care and intent to accommodate their renters. The view is so lovely being right on Mirror Lake in a cove.

Maison Rouge is a special home and obviously well cared for and well equipped for guests. We enjoyed the calming view of Mirror Lake, the comfortable antique furniture, the quiet, and the safe walks to Main Street via trails and small lanes with very few cars. The property manager was responsive and kind. We hope to return.

We don't typically leave average or negative reviews - I either leave a 5-star or don't leave one at all - but this stay was unusual enough that we wanted to share it. The location is excellent, with a lovely view over Mirror Lake and a short drive to Main Street in Highlands. The house itself was more of a mixed bag: the decor felt eclectic and somewhat dated, and the tub in the main floor bathroom didn't drain properly, so you ended up standing in water partway through every shower. What stood out most was an exchange partway through our stay. The property manager told us the homeowner monitors the property via cameras at the front door and in the backyard, and had noticed we had two dogs rather than the one that our pet deposit covered, which was not made clear beforehand. We cleared up the misunderstanding, but the tone felt accusatory, and it was unsettling to learn the homeowner was watching the cameras during our stay. Separately, the smart Nest thermostat crept up to 75 degrees multiple times while we were out, despite us setting it to 70 each time we were there, which left us with the impression it may have been adjusted remotely. The location and view are real strengths, and the house is comfortable enough to stay in. But the level of monitoring and the tone of communication during our stay left us feeling less trusted as guests than we expected in a home we'd paid to have to ourselves.

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughtful review. It highlights aspects of Maison Rouge other potential guests may find meaningful. We are glad you found the house comfortable. We are also glad you found the location excellent, with a lovely view over Mirror Lake and a short drive to Main Street in Highlands. As to any "misunderstanding," our VRBO property description clearly lists 2 exterior security cameras for guest safety. The front driveway camera is monitored only the day of check-in to ensure safe guest arrival. (All audio is turned off.) The second exterior camera covers only the boat storage area. As to pets, our VRBO listing also clearly indicates (in all CAPS) a ONE dog limit. Only one pet was registered on your reservation for which a pet fee was paid. Subsequently, upon your arrival, two (2) dogs were captured on the exterior camera without any notification to the host, or permission from the host. We sincerely apologize the discovery of unpermitted pets left you "feeling less trusted as guests". The Town of Highlands has strict short-term occupancy rules. Monitoring the number of guests and pets at the time of check-in helps us abide by the town's rules. As to interior house temperatures, the two NEST thermostats are new. The installer pre-programmed them on an “ECO” schedule. The "ECO" setting automatically adjusts the temperature settings based on whether the home is occupied, ensuring a balance between comfort and energy efficiency. The schedule can be manually adjusted, but will return to pre-programmed temperatures taking into account external weather conditions and interior humidity levels. A plumber has checked all drains throughout the house and they are properly functioning. Again, we appreciate your feedback, and must clarify that our house rules clearly state no unregistered pets are allowed. We strive to maintain a comfortable environment for all guests, and we hope future guests will respect our policies.

Our family time together at Maison Rouge will be unforgettable thanks to your home and the convenient location!Everything was nice and clean, organized, well equipped and wonderfully inviting! We couldn't help but be drawn in to every space! The beds and baths were perfect-plenty of towels. The porches were amazing and had enough seating for everyone to enjoy the spectacular view of Mirror Lake! The downstairs was favored especially for the kids and the electric piano-we seem to have budding artists! There is a vast selection of books in your library - so fun! Truly Mirror Lake did not disappoint! We had a wonderful time at nearby Quarry Falls. The kids loved rock climbing and jumping off the ledge into the water at the base of a beautiful waterfall slide! We added Dry Falls to our places to see! Magnificent! The restaurants were fabulous and the nearby grocery store in highlands was all a family could ask for!The wine was a very nice gesture of hospitality-many thanks! We’d love to make a trip back!
