Heaven's Door; Your Hawaii Dream Awaits. 100% Private Home (Stream, Lake, Koi)

Bedrooms 2
Property type house

About the property

Private House & Exclusive 2 Acre Property - 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4)

*Due to restrictions imposed by our insurance company, (ponds and stream), we cannot rent this property to anyone with children under the age of 18.

To our potential guests we say.....'Noho Ka Moe'uhane' or 'Live the dream'...If you are coming to the Hilo side of the Big Island to see waterfalls and experience the magnificent beauty of Hawaii's tropical wonders then this completely private and romantic property is for you. Don't settle for a B&B, sharing a home, or a water feature property with multiple houses on it. This gated 2 acre property is 100% private...Just you and nature. With a year round stream, small private lake teaming with fish (their pets not dinner:) this is the tropical Hawaii you only see in movies; unspoiled and 2 acres that are totally private and cannot be seen by any other house, just you and the sights, sounds and smells of a lush green tropical paradise. This home is located in the "District of North Hilo" one of the most pristine tropical areas on the Big Island called the 'Gold Coast' a short 25 min drive from Downtown. FYI: VRBO mapping, Google Earth & GPS's are often incorrect in the islands. Passing through the gates, you drive along a private 425 foot long driveway surrounded by giant tree ferns, 100 ft. tall palms, wild mango and avocado trees and a beautiful year round spring fed stream. Mangos, guava's and avocados often fall from huge trees on the hill and are delivered directly to the entry gates for your convenience. Heaven's Door has a lovely, 2/bedroom, 2/bath cedar home on it. It is the perfect romantic location for people who want to get away from it all however, it is also very comfortable with 2 couples who want to enjoy the unique sights and sounds of a true jungle paradise. Fall asleep to the ramble of the stream running over the boulders and the sounds of the tropical jungle at night then wake to native Hawaiian birds singing and flitting from tree to tree in a stunning tropical forest. No need to close the blinds nobody can see in and you can awake to a pristine jungle view. There are some stream and water feature properties in downtown Hilo but none are private like the 2 acres of Heaven's Door. Downtown properties are average parcel lot sizes of 10k sq. ft. and some do have great streams even waterfalls but you will have neighbors either side of you and very little privacy for a much nightly higher price. This isn't in the middle of nowhere it's just off the main Hwy. 19, it's your vacation you can share it with other travelers or you can experience 100% privacy, just you and nature. This property's placement on the vrbo map is incorrect, you're more than welcome to contact us for the exact property location before booking. (There's a lot more to learn about Heaven's Door. If this property interests you please read all the information written, click on; MORE DETAILS)

Build a romantic fire in the fireplace or enjoy the private indoor cedar sauna (best with two but comfortable with four). The large master bedroom welcomes you with a comfy Pillow Top King size 'Perfect Sleeper' and in-suite master bath. Both bathrooms have full size tubs and showers. The second bedroom offers you a Queen Size pillow-top bed with a view of the lower pond and the sounds of 'liquid chatter' as the stream rambles by. There is also a 'full size stacked' washer/dryer combo located inside the master bath suite. Just outside your door, there's a beautiful year round stream that runs completely along the perimeter of the property, it feeds a 79,000 gallon small lake, teaming with fish, Red Eared Slider Aquatic Turtles, even a "quack-less" duck. You can feed the fish if you like, they do have two automatic fish feeders that dispense food to them twice daily but they always enjoy an extra treat from our guests. There is also an outdoor shower (cold only) for those who like to enjoy nature at its best, clothing optional:) There are mosquitos all over Hawaii, Heaven's Door is no exception. Some people ask the question, "are their more mosquitos because of the pond and stream"? NO the ponds do NOT breed mosquitos due to the fish in them. There can be swarms of fruit fly's that people often mistake for mosquitos that's because the fruit gnats will come whenever the the wild fruit drops from the trees, mangos, avocados and such. But again, there are mosquitos all over Hawaii so get some repellent and enjoy all the outdoors during your Big Island vacation.

We often see a beautiful and rare Hawaiian Hawk the 'Io (Pronounced...'Eo). She likes to come in the mornings and hunt crayfish out of the stream. Watch her from your morning breakfast table as she perches on one of the large stream boulders and enjoys her catch. There are only an estimated 1400-2100 of these beautiful birds of prey left in the Hawaiian Islands, most of those are on the Big Island. This lovely private property invites you to become 'one with the aina' (the land). The entire 2+ acres is it's own secluded valley and offers you absolute privacy. It cannot be seen by any other house and has only one private gated (locked) access. This vacation rental gives you the ultimate get away from it all experience without driving out to the middle of nowhere. NO 4-WD vehicle necessary. Although this is a tropical rainforest property we are NOT 'off the grid. This house has Hawaii County Water and Electricity, we are NOT dependent on solar panels, generators or catchment water as many stream and water feature properties are. Unfortunately there is no cable TV offered in this area and the valley is to tight for Satellite Dish reception but we do have an extensive collection (over 500 titles) of DVD's including many boxed HBO and TV Series. We offer free Wi-Fi internet access via Verizon Modem and Cradlepoint Wi-Fi router. Internet service is reliable but depends on a cellular connection and can be rather slow by todays standards. Not capable of streaming video or movies, but OK for checking your emails or Facebook. Remember....You're on vacation:) You may find cheaper rentals (often with several houses on one property) or more expensive stream view rentals in downtown Hilo but they will be on smaller parcels and surrounded by other houses; there's only one truly 100% private "Heaven's Door" Centrally located to all your sightseeing needs. The Hilo side of the Big Island is truly unique and offers unparalleled sightseeing. This property is close to numerous waterfalls; Umauma Falls & two different zip line adventures, are all a short 3-5 min. drive away, Kolekole Park (5 min.), Akaka and Kahuna Falls (10 min.), Rainbow Falls and Boiling Pots (35 min) and beautiful Onomea Bay as well as Onomea Botanical Gardens (10 min.), 25 minutes from the quaint historical Hilo Town and it's wonderful Hilo farmers market Wed. & Sat. are their big days but there are always a few vendors during the the rest of the week. Take a drive up to Volcano's National Park and experience Madam Pele (Hawaiian Goddess of Fire) up close and personal. Hike out to where the 'Aina' (land) is being born as Kiluea flows hot molten lava into the ocean. It's always good to check with the Park Rangers before hiking. So....Come...Share our piece of paradise and live your dream...Live Aloha

Many owners and property managers will not even mention the Coqui Tree Frog problem on the Big Island, but we believe in total honesty with our guests. All properties especially on the Hilo side of the Big Island have Coqui frogs. Unfortunately, they are just part of the entire Big Island these days, especially the Hilo side, they are even in the high rent $600+ per/nt vacation rentals. Coqui's are a small tree frog not native to Hawaii. Nothing to do with streams or ponds, they're a tree frog native to Puerto Rico where they have snakes that eat these frogs. Hawaii having NO snakes provided a perfect predator free environment for these very small creatures to multiply. Coqui's are on the Kona side as well, likely fewer though because Kona is very dry and baron of the vegetation they prefer. Coqui frogs "chip" at night, if you are a light sleeper you may not want to stay anywhere on the Big Island especially the Hilo side, except at higher, colder elevation (below 50°) or bring ear plugs to any rental you choose. We provide free individually packaged earplugs for you should you want them. The majority of people like the Coqui's and review them as, "charming", "part of the experience", "love the rainforest song" and many other positive descriptions in our reviews. And there are some people who just don't like them or any noises at night, remember the rainforest is alive day and night, it's truly spectacular.

The new VRBO pin/mapping system does not work well with many Hawaii rentals. This beautiful property is located in District of North Hilo, exactly 14 miles N. of downtown Hilo a short 25 min. drive on Hwy. 19. Sorry, the VRBO map it shows it in "downtown Hilo" ???

About Linda Martin

Ken and I retired from our lives on California's Central Coast in 1991 to move to Hawaii. Since then we have lived on Oahu's North Shore. We are fortunate to have our children and grandchildren also living here in the islands. We are active with our travels as well as multiple animal, children and Cancer charities and are grateful to be living in such a special place.

Linda Martin purchased this house in 2006

Why Linda Martin chose Hilo

Since we live full time on Oahu's North Shore we chose Heaven's Door as a second home for ourselves. Living on the beach is wonderful but we thought a tropical hideaway just a short 40 min. flight from Oahu would be the ideal getaway. One of the best things about Heaven's Door is that it is not dependent on solar or generators and it was indeed difficult to find a country property with a stream and water features that was actually 'on the grid' with County water and electricity. The search went on for 3 years to find this unique and pristine property but it was was well worth it. Just as we searched for 3 years to find this property I encourage all potential renters to completely read all the information available on not just this listing but on any property you are considering. And don't be afraid to send an information request to the owner with any questions before you put your credit card info in, be sure with any rental it has everything you want in your vacation home. We are always happy to discuss the pros and cons of Heaven's Door with guests.

What makes this house unique

Don't get me wrong, we love our home at the beach on Oahu, but going over to the quiet town of Hilo and the serenity of Heaven's Door is truly a Hawaiian experience even for those of us who live in Hawaii year round. I can't begin to describe the peace that comes over us when we get to Heaven's Door. There are no other sounds except the wind rustling the palm trees and the birds. At night my husband likes to listen to the frogs and crickets something we don't have at the beach. This tropical paradise is our favorite local getaway even though we spend a lot of our time there fixing, fine tuning and caring for the property. We are fortunate to have a wonderful caretaker who does the gardening and cleanings for us and only lives two miles away. I encourage you to experience Heaven's Door for yourself, you won't be disappointed. Check out the guest comments from other people just like yourself. Aloha Oe', Linda and Ken Martin

Jungle Paradise

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful property and was a fun, unique experience for us to stay. The driveway alone is enough to make it memorable. Think Indiana Jones / Jurassic Park. The location is a wonderful combination of "off the beaten path" and still close to "civilization". The home was furnished with everything needed to enjoy our time. It was a little chilly in the early mornings, but blankets were available (and the sauna!). Wireless was adequate for checking emails & texting. Anything else can and should wait! And to top it off, I was thrilled to see the Bond 50 blu-ray collection (although we only watched about 20 minutes of one Bond movie). Too much else to do.

We could not believe how lush and tropical the grounds are at Heaven's Door! The grounds are supreme (and private). Lots of birds, frogs and other animals. There is a beautiful stream running through the property that I enjoyed boulder hopping down. The pond fish were fun to watch, especially the predator fish. Once I found him, he kept an eye on me at all times! This is a beautiful, beautiful place. Location is excellent to explore the Hamakua Coast - so many wonderful drives and places to see.

Communication with Linda was excellent and having stayed at another of her properties, we know that she has an eye for exceptional locations. Staying at Heaven's Door will be one of the enduring experiences of our Big Island vacation. Thank you (and we hope you get feeling better soon, Linda :)

Owner's Response: Aloha I'm glad that you've got to experience two of our unique rental properties now. What a wonderful review, I think you covered everything. I love the part about Indiana Jones meets Jurassic Park and the predator fish that keeps an eye on you. Indeed he does, you are the only thing in his world that's bigger than him:) Heaven's Door does have an "Exceptional Location", since it is off the beaten path and still close to civilization (a short 20 min. drive to downtown Hilo); believe me those types of properties are hard to find:) I look forward to seeing you on a future trip to Hawaii and thank you for the well wishes for my health. Five Days In Paradise

  • 5 of 5

When you think "getting away from it all", think this place. It's such a great value for what it has to offer. Perhaps the license plate on our car, starting with ZEN, was an omen. If you love a natural environment, you won't find much better than this. There was lots to do in and around Hilo. It was difficult to come back to civilization in a neighborhood environment on the Kona Coast. Linda could not have been a nicer, more communicative host.

An absolute MUST

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed on 5 different properties during our two weeks on the Island and this was the best by far!~ You are really staying in a rain forest and they have taken great steps to make sure your stay is the best it can be. Everything in the description is true and we didn't mind the cute frogs at all. They serenaded us to sleep each night. It was all part of the experience. We will definitely recommend this place to our friends and thank you Linda for your attention to detail and your hospitality!

wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5

We had a great getaway at the tropical resort. The house had all the amenities. Linda is a wonderful host, very accommodative of our needs. The internet works at the dinning area. We spent time reading books, and enjoying the place. The cell reception around this area is poor but Linda allowed us to use the land line for local phone calls. The kitchen is fully equipped. The place is very clean and comfortable. Beautiful birds around and just sounds of nature all around.

Glorious. Wonderful. Can’t wait to return.

  • 5 of 5

It would be hard to explain how much we loved Heaven’s Door. But two weeks after getting back, we are listening to a recorded loop of night sounds to lull us to sleep here on the mainland.

The house was exactly as advertised — an escape in the middle of the rainforest. It was hard to leave each morning to enjoy the sights. The rental property — with its stream, and pond and flowers and bananas and ferns, ferns, ferns — seemed like somewhere we would hike miles just to get to.

The entire environment was wonderful and glorious — the foliage, the fish, the heron, the new duck, which took us a bit to come up with a name for, but we settled on Daphne. She seems like a Daphne, plus that’s a name from one of our favorite movies “Some Like it Hot,” one that is on the shelf of DVD’s for evening viewing.

We visited sights from Waipo’o overlook, to Volcano, to Puna. Checked out Rainbow Falls with three different flow rates. Akaka and Umauma are minutes away. Mr. Ed’s in Honomu offers great baked goods for day or the next morning. The Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens was well worth the price of admission.

This was a great place to start adventures and a wonderful place to relax and absorb the days events (and review so many pictures) in the evenings.

Thanks Linda, for making our time in Hawaii something we will never, ever forget.

As we closed the gate and headed to the airport, our radio was playing Bruno Mars’ “Locked out of Heaven.” And that was how we felt leaving Heaven’s Door and the Big Island Behind.

We can’t wait to return to Heaven’s Door on our next trip.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your wonderful review and for naming the new mystery duck that just showed up. I think that "Daphne Duck" is a great name and indeed "Some Like It Hot" was a great Marilyn Monroe movie. So happy that Heaven's Door exceeded your expectations and you made that connection with it. Please be assured you will never be "Locked Out Of Heaven" we hope you will return on many future visits. Mahalo, Linda and Ken

Away from big roads, in a lush narrow valley, next to a waterfall. A Rainforest experience.

  • 5 of 5

Great not to hear leaf-blowers, lawn-mowers, and traffic is this lush rainforest "preserve." There are no close neighbors. The house is down a 100-meter long tunnel like driveway, nestled in a narrow valley next to a waterfall in an area where the heavy rain falling on the east-side of the volcano creates a multitude of spectacular waterfalls along this steep coast of the Big Island. The grounds are filled with colorful plants and has a fish-filled pond which has a resident Muscovy duck and Heron. The wood-walled house is 19 miles north of Hilo and has a sauna, two bathrooms, two bedrooms, and a large living room with plenty of CD's to watch. The owners provide plenty of towels and the washer/ dryer, which allows one to dry out clothing if the rain forest climate makes them damp. A real rain forest experience.
