Overview

About the property

Private House & Exclusive 2 Acre Property - 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4)

We're very proud of our 5/5 Star VRBO Rating with 64 reviews:)

To our potential guests we say.....'Noho Ka Moe'uhane' or 'Live the dream'...If you are coming to the Hilo side of the Big Island to see waterfalls and experience the magnificent beauty of Hawaii's tropical wonders then this completely private and romantic property is for you. Save the beach experience for Maui, Kauai or Oahu. With a year round stream, small private lake teaming with fish and a second koi pond right outside your bedroom window this is the tropical Hawaii you only see in movies; unspoiled and totally private, just you and the sights, sounds and smells of a lush green tropical paradise. This home is located in one of the most pristine tropical areas on the Big Island called the 'Gold Coast' (only two minutes off the main highway). Passing through the gates, you drive along a private 425 foot long driveway surrounded by giant tree ferns, 100 ft. tall palms, wild mango and avocado trees and a beautiful year round spring fed stream. This is the first time since it was built that this unique private estate has ever been offered as a vacation rental. Don't settle for a B&B and/or sharing a home with owners or other guests on the same property. This gated 2 acre property is 100% private...Just you and nature. Come...Live Your Dream...Live Aloha (To Read More; click MORE DETAILS)

Heaven's Door has a lovely, 2/bedroom, 2/bath cedar home on it. It is the perfect romantic location for people who want to get away from it all. Fall asleep to the ramble of the stream running over the boulders and the sounds of the tropical jungle at night then wake to native Hawaiian birds singing and flitting from tree to tree in a stunning tropical forest. Heaven's Door is also very comfortable with 2 couples who want to enjoy the unique sights and sounds of a true jungle paradise.

Build a romantic fire in the fireplace or enjoy the private indoor cedar sauna (best with two but comfortable with four). The large master bedroom welcomes you with a comfy Pillow Top King size 'Perfect Sleeper' and in-suite master bath. Both bathrooms have full size tubs and showers. The second bedroom offers you a Queen Size pillow-top bed with a view of the lower pond and the sounds of 'liquid chatter' as the stream rambles by all year round. There is also a 'full size stacked' washer/dryer combo located inside the master bath suite. The master bedroom has a second koi pond just outside the large picture window where you can watch the koi. Both bedrooms look out onto a beautiful year round stream that runs completely along the perimeter of the property. There is a 79,000 gallon small lake, teaming with fish, both HUGE 30 year old Koi and GIANT Talapia, just outside the front door. You can feed the fish if you like, they do have two automatic fish feeders that dispense food to them twice daily but they always enjoy an extra treat from our guests. There is also an outdoor shower (cold only) for those who like to enjoy nature at its best.

Just outside your living room windows, across the pond there is a weeping wall, constantly running water down its rough lava face. These unique natural water features are often called 'Pele's Tears'. It is said of 'weeping walls' that 'Pele' the Hawaiian Fire Goddess who created the 'aina' (the land) is weeping for her children (the islands). We often see a beautiful and rare Hawaiian Hawk the 'Io (Pronounced...'Eo). She likes to come in the mornings and hunt crayfish out of the stream. Watch her from your morning breakfast table as she perches on one of the large stream boulders and enjoys her catch. There are only an estimated 1400-2100 of these beautiful birds of prey left in the Hawaiian Islands, most of those are here on the Big Island.

This lovely private property invites you to become 'one with the aina' (the land). The entire 2+ acres is it's own secluded valley and offers you absolute privacy. It cannot be seen by any other house and has only one private gated access. This vacation rental gives you the ultimate get away from it all experience without driving out to the middle of nowhere. We are close to the main Hwy. 19, very easy to find and NO 4-WD vehicle necessary. Although this is a tropical rainforest property we are NOT 'off the grid' like most similar water feature properties are. This house has Hawaii County Water and Electricity, we are NOT dependent on solar panels, generators or catchment water as many stream and water feature properties are. Unfortunately there is no cable TV offered in this area but we do have an extensive collection (over 300 titles) of DVD's including many boxed HBO and TV Series. We offer free Wi-Fi internet access via Verizon Modem and Cradlepoint Wi-Fi router. Internet service is reliable but depends on a cellular connection and is rather slow by todays standards. Not capable of streaming video or movies, but OK for checking your emails. Remember....You're on vacation:) You may find cheaper or more expensive rentals but there's only one "Heaven's Door"....Since first offering this property in 2007 as a vacation rental, we've had100% 5-Star reviews until recently we received one 3-Star review. That many years of positive reviews can't be wrong.

Location...Location....Location...."Heaven's Door" is very centrally located to all your sightseeing needs. The Hilo side of the Big Island is truly unique and offers unparalleled sightseeing. This property is located just off Hwy. 19 and is close to numerous waterfalls; Umauma Falls & two different zip line adventures, are all a short 3 min. drive away, Kolekole Park (5 min.), Akaka and Kahuna Falls (10 min.), Rainbow Falls and Boiling Pots (25 min) and beautiful Onomea Bay as well as Onomea Botanical Gardens (10 min.) and only 20 minutes from the quaint historical Hilo Town. Pick up local fresh fruits and vegetables at the wonderful Hilo farmers market Wed. & Sat. are their big days but there are always a few vendors during the the rest of the week.

Take a drive up to Volcano's National Park and experience Madam Pele (Hawaiian Goddess of Fire) up close and personal. Hike out to where the 'Aina' (land) is being born as Kiluea flows hot molten lava into the ocean. Check with the Park Rangers before hiking and you can also get updates on lava flows, etc. at USGS.GOV then navigate to Hawaii Volcanos Natl. Park.

Come...Share our piece of paradise and live the Hawaii dream!

Due to the fact that some future guests may be allergic, this rental is Non-Smoking!

*Unfortunately no children under 18 are allowed due to insurance restrictions because of the ponds & stream.

One of our guests did a complementary video of Heaven's Door during their stay. The video mostly focused on the interior of the house and not so much on the unique surroundings of this tropical paradise.

About The Owner

Ken and I retired from our lives on California's Central Coast in 1991 to move to Hawaii. Since then we have lived on Oahu's North Shore. We are fortunate to have our children and grandchildren also living here in the islands. We are active with multiple animal and children charities and are grateful to be living in such a special place.

The Owner purchased this house in 2006

Why The Owner chose Hilo District

Since we live full time on Oahu's North Shore we chose Heaven's Door as a second home for ourselves. Living on the beach is wonderful but we thought a tropical hideaway just a short 40 min. flight from Oahu would be the ideal getaway. One of the best things about Heaven's Door is that it is not dependent on solar or generators and it was indeed difficult to find a country property with a stream and water features that was actually 'on the grid' with County water and electricity. The search went on for 3 years to find this unique and pristine property but it was was well worth it.

What makes this house unique

Don't get me wrong, we love our home at the beach on Oahu, but going over to the quiet town of Hilo and the serenity of Heaven's Door is truly a Hawaiian experience even for those of us who live in Hawaii year round. I can't begin to describe the peace that comes over us when we get to Heaven's Door. There are no other sounds except the wind rustling the palm trees and the birds. At night my husband likes to listen to the frogs and crickets something we don't have at the beach. This tropical paradise is our favorite local getaway even though we spend a lot of our time there fixing, fine tuning and caring for the property. We are fortunate to have a wonderful caretaker who does the gardening and cleanings for us and only lives two miles away. I encourage you to experience Heaven's Door for yourself, you won't be disappointed. Check out the guest comments from other people just like yourself. Aloha Oe', Linda and Ken Martin

Jungle Paradise

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful property and was a fun, unique experience for us to stay. The driveway alone is enough to make it memorable. Think Indiana Jones / Jurassic Park. The location is a wonderful combination of "off the beaten path" and still close to "civilization". The home was furnished with everything needed to enjoy our time. It was a little chilly in the early mornings, but blankets were available (and the sauna!). Wireless was adequate for checking emails & texting. Anything else can and should wait! And to top it off, I was thrilled to see the Bond 50 blu-ray collection (although we only watched about 20 minutes of one Bond movie). Too much else to do.

We could not believe how lush and tropical the grounds are at Heaven's Door! The grounds are supreme (and private). Lots of birds, frogs and other animals. There is a beautiful stream running through the property that I enjoyed boulder hopping down. The pond fish were fun to watch, especially the predator fish. Once I found him, he kept an eye on me at all times! This is a beautiful, beautiful place. Location is excellent to explore the Hamakua Coast - so many wonderful drives and places to see.

Communication with Linda was excellent and having stayed at another of her properties, we know that she has an eye for exceptional locations. Staying at Heaven's Door will be one of the enduring experiences of our Big Island vacation. Thank you (and we hope you get feeling better soon, Linda :)

Owner's Response: Aloha I'm glad that you've got to experience two of our unique rental properties now. What a wonderful review, I think you covered everything. I love the part about Indiana Jones meets Jurassic Park and the predator fish that keeps an eye on you. Indeed he does, you are the only thing in his world that's bigger than him:) Heaven's Door is indeed an "Exceptional Location that is off the beaten path and still close to civilization" believe me those types of properties are hard to find:) I look forward to seeing you on a future trip to Hawaii. Hawaii's Garden Of Eden

  • 5 of 5

We were a bit nervous about this vacation rental, many owners overstate their properties. There is NO WAY the listing could overstate this home and property, every aspect surpassed our hopes & expectations. The photos on VRBO are lovely but nothing compares to being there. Our biggest regret is not planning more daylight hours at this rental - it's a worthy destination unto itself.

THE LOCATION is overwhelming - the house is in a huge tropical garden. Once you close the gate and drive up a beautiful stream lined driveway you feel like you are on your own enchanted island. It feels nicely secluded from any civilization with no other people or houses around. Yet it's only two minutes from Highway 19 and about twenty minutes to Hilo. The garden is extremely beautiful and the landscaping is an artwork by itself. There is a stream running through the garden, and two fish ponds. Beautiful sunny days and cool evenings just like a Hawaii travel brochure. One added bonus was being able to witness the morning ritual of “Waldo”, the local blue heron that visits the fish pond every morning, conveniently at the same time the auto feeder dispenses food to the giant koi and tilapia! Very entertaining!

THE HOUSE itself is amazing. It’s spacious, very clean with good screens and extremely well equipped. Loved keeping all the windows open and listening to the “Rainforest Song”. No A/C but it has ceiling fans in every room - we were NOT HOT even in July. You will want for nothing, every detail has been thought of with hundreds of DVD’s and Hawaiian music, maps, coolers for outings, flashlights hanging by each bed, food to feed the Koi, hose to wash the car, even shampoo and conditioner just like a hotel. The king bed was very comfortable and the kitchen is well stocked. I think the only things we bought for use at the house was food & laundry detergent. The stacked washer/dryer located in the house was a real convenience since we only had carry on bags.

BIG ISLAND - We spent one day in Kona and were so happy we decided to make the Hilo side our primary base camp. We found Kona to be very hot, dry and desert like, huge resorts and golf courses are not our thing. The Hilo side of the Island was a great place for touring with so many wonderful attractions, Volcano, waterfalls, zip lines, black sand beach, hiking, etc. The Hamakua Coast is so beautiful, cool and refreshing.

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED - Amazingly none! Heaven’s Door won't disappoint. It is - PURE EDEN

Owner's Response: Thank you for your detailed review of Heaven's Door. We're always so pleased when we "exceed" our guests expectations. I'm glad you put most of your time on the Hilo side and were pleased with your decision. Kona does have its own beauty but indeed it is a busy tourist resort destination. Mahalo:)

Pristine Rainforest Experience

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I wanted a tropical rainforest experience for this trip to the Big Island, we've been to Kona several times but it's to crowded and commercialized. This property looked perfect with the stream, ponds, wildlife, birds, frogs, etc. I read about 10 of the reviews and they all say the same thing that this place is "exactly as advertised" and it's the perfect tropical Hawaiian hideaway without a long drive from town. All true! The house is modern, very comfortable with tile floors everywhere so you don't have to worry about getting carpet dirty. We didn't cook but it has a nice open kitchen that seemed fully equipped with everything necessary to make great meals. It's nicely decorated and has a big master bedroom with an attached bathroom (including laundry). Both bathrooms are good size and both have showers and tubs with great water pressure. I was concerned that we might need A/C in July but there are ceiling fans in each room that kept us very comfortable, you want to be sure and open all the windows to get a nice breeze and to listen to all the sounds of the jungle. We left the windows open while we were away and when we came home the house was always nice and cool. I saw no bugs in this house during our stay and that surprised me since we are in the middle of their jungle, good screens on the doors and windows. The little tree frogs sing at night, at first I thought they might be to loud but as many people said in their reviews, it turned out to be a really nice thing to listen to, and it was exactly what we wanted a "true rainforest experience" without having to go to Costa Rica or somewhere. The frogs do go to sleep or maybe they just become quiet after awhile, either that or you just don't notice them anymore? Like everyone else we enjoyed the Koi and lake fish, watching the night Heron try to catch fish and most of all the view and sounds of the stream and jungle, night and day. We even enjoyed the frogs although we never saw what they looked like?

Owner's Response: Aloha: We're very happy that you found your "true rainforest experience", good to get it without the long trip to Costa Rica. Heaven's Door no passport required:) The tree frogs you didn't see are called Coqui frogs and are about the size of a quarter; they are not native to Hawaii. They accidentally came in on a shipment of trees from Puerto Rico many years ago and are only found on the Big Island so far. Hawaii Agricultural officers work hard to keep them from spreading to the other islands. Thank you for your wonderful 5-star review. Hope you get to come back on a future trip.

Secluded rain forest house which was relaxing, although very hot.

  • 3 of 5

My husband and I enjoyed this house, as it was indeed in a rainforest with really great nature watching/listening. We liked feeding the koi fish in the morning and the bed was soft and comfortable. I'm giving 3 stars because the rental was further from town than the map suggested, 20-30 mins at least from town. Also, the heat made sleeping difficult each night, which can be fixed with a simple box fan for the bedroom windows. The frogs were REALLY loud at night, but after the first night we used earplugs which really helped. Overall, if you're looking for a get away from it all house for your vacation (and you're fine with heat) than this is the place for you!

Owner's Response: Aloha, we're sorry that you felt Heaven's Door only deserved a 3-Star review, yours is the first review in our 10 year history with VRBO that was not 5-Star:( I wish that you had read the entire vrbo webpage as we do list that this property is a short 20 minutes from downtown Hilo in two places on the advertisement. Most responsible owners don't list the "exact address" because the website calendar shows when guests arrive and when it is vacant, so it is not a safe practice for the security and privacy of our guests and property. When there is no exact address, VRBO "pins" the property anywhere within the Hilo zip code. A 20 min drive is still very short to get to such a unique rainforest property just off the main road. Many reviews all refer to the Coqui frogs, unfortunately the Coqui frogs are everywhere including downtown Hilo. With regards to your concern about heat at night, we have ceiling fans in every room including over the beds so I'm not sure why you were so hot, perhaps you kept the windows all closed up. None of the reviews during Summer/Fall months mention it being to hot? I suggest to those potential guests be sure to read all the information provided on every website you're considering and you are always welcome to contact us with any possible questions. Please take a few minutes to read over some of 62 other 5-Star reviews dating back to 2006. Mahalo

House in the enchanted forest

  • 5 of 5

Driving up the wooded driveway to this house is like entering another world, lush with trees and flowering plants and alive with the sounds of birds and other wildlife. In the daytime it feels like a hidden getaway, which it is, and at night the constant chirping of tree frogs makes it feel like your own private jungle. (I was afraid they'd keep us awake, but we slept like babies.)The house is compact, comfortable, and very clean. The bedrooms and bathrooms are small, but had everything we needed, including large closets. The beds are extremely comfortable, and we loved the little extras, including suitcase stands in the bedrooms and night lights in both bedrooms and bathrooms. The only challenge for us was that the dining table is high and its chairs are tall stools, too high to be comfortable for my bad hip. The stools at the kitchen counter are shorter, though, and worked for the short time we were there. We loved feeding the koi, sitting on the little deck, and just breathing in the amazing atmosphere. We also were happy to have the great dvd collection, and enjoyed watching Tom Hanks trying to get out of the NYC airport (perhaps not the best movie to watch the evening before flying home). In short, this is a fantastic place to get away from it all, and we would certainly love to do it again.

Owner's Response: Aloha: Thank you for taking the time to write your 5-Star review of Heaven's Door. We're glad you enjoyed the sights and sounds of a tropical rainforest, it is most unique. Sorry the bar stools were a bit to high for your with your "bad hip", most people like to look out the window to the pond from the dining table. Happy to hear you will be returning on a future trip. Exactly as promised.

My husband and I stayed here for 3 nights as part of our Hawaiian adventure. Originally, we had booked a different home, south of Hilo, but thank goodness we found Heaven's Door! Secluded, yet within easy access of Hwy 19, it was the best base we could have chosen. Privacy, nature, and all the comforts of home in one location. Home was clean and well laid out. No A/C, but that was only a minor issue since once we opened the windows and made sure the fans were operating, it cooled down. (We hadn't yet acclimated to the humidity yet, so more our issue than the property's!) The bed was comfortable and the washer/dryer helped us keep our packing list limited!

Labeled instructions throughout the home made figuring out the lights/fans/koi feeding a breeze. Be sure to read the entire info sheet prior to arriving - it's very helpful. Linda had contacted me at booking - her care and love of the property is evident and Lindsey does a great job maintaining the home. While the houseis in a jungle setting, there is still an order to the plant life which creates a calm oasis in the wildness. It rained most evenings, but was sunny again the next day.

We didn't get to meet 'Io, but the heron stopped by as well as the cats, several geckos and some snails. We definitely recommend staying here if you are looking in the area.
