HURRICANE UPDATE: Heaven's Door did NOT sustain any damage from Hurricane Lane or Olivia. Our stream never escaped it's banks:)
VOLCANO UPDATE 9/19/18: Things are cooling down! Book with confidence. Our air quality is excellent due to the trade winds. Our water is purified municipal water NOT catchment as many properties. There is so much to see and do on the Hilo side of the Big Island, come and enjoy paradise.
To our potential guests we say.....'Noho Ka Moe'uhane' or 'Live the dream'...If you are coming to the Hilo side of the Big Island to see waterfalls and experience the magnificent beauty of Hawaii's tropical wonders then this completely private and romantic property is for you. Don't settle for a B&B, sharing a home, or a water feature property with multiple houses on it. This gated 2 acre property is 100% private...Just you and nature. With a year round stream, small private lake teaming with fish (their pets not dinner:) this is the tropical Hawaii you only see in movies; unspoiled and 2 acres that are totally private and cannot be seen by any other house, just you and the sights, sounds and smells of a lush green tropical paradise. This home is located in the "District of North Hilo" one of the most pristine tropical areas on the Big Island called the 'Gold Coast' a short 25 min drive from Downtown. Passing through the gates, you drive along a private 425 foot long driveway surrounded by giant tree ferns, 100 ft. tall palms, wild mango and avocado trees and a beautiful year round spring fed stream. Mangos, guava's and avocados often fall from huge trees on the hill and are dropped directly at the entry gates for your convenience. Heaven's Door has a lovely, 2/bedroom, 2/bath cedar home on it. It is the perfect romantic location for people who want to get away from it all however, it is also very comfortable with 2 couples who want to enjoy the unique sights and sounds of a true jungle paradise. Fall asleep to the ramble of the stream running over the boulders and the sounds of the tropical jungle at night then wake to native Hawaiian birds singing and flitting from tree to tree in a stunning tropical forest. No need to close the blinds nobody can see in and you can awake to a pristine jungle view. There are properties in downtown Hilo with streams and water features but none are private like the 2 acres of Heaven's Door. Downtown properties are average parcel lot sizes of 10k sq. ft. and some do have streams even waterfalls but you WILL have neighbors either side of you and very little privacy and you will pay a higher price there than Heaven's Door. It's your vacation you can share it with other travelers or you can experience 100% privacy, just you and nature. This isn't in the middle of nowhere like Paradise Park or Keeau, it's 1 min. off the main Hwy. 19 just North of Hilo nowhere near the lava flow. This property's placement on the vrbo map is incorrect, you're more than welcome to contact us for the exact property location before booking. (There's a lot more to learn about Heaven's Door. If this property interests you please read all the information written, click on; MORE DETAILS)
You can build a romantic fire in the fireplace or enjoy the private indoor cedar sauna (best with two but comfortable with four). The large master bedroom welcomes you with a comfy Pillow Top King size 'Perfect Sleeper' and in-suite master bath. Both bathrooms have full size tubs and showers. The second bedroom offers you a Queen Size pillow-top bed with a view of the lower pond and the sounds of 'liquid chatter' as the stream rambles by. There is also a 'full size stacked' washer/dryer combo located inside the master bath suite. Just outside your door, there's a beautiful year round stream that runs completely along the perimeter of the property, it feeds a 79,000 gallon small lake, teaming with fish and Red Eared Slider Aquatic Turtles. You can feed the fish if you like, they do have two automatic fish feeders that dispense food to them twice daily but they always enjoy an extra treat from our guests (fish food provided). There is also an outdoor shower (cold only) for those who like to enjoy nature at its best, clothing optional:) There are mosquitos all over Hawaii, Heaven's Door is no exception. Some people ask the question, "are their more mosquitos because of the pond and stream"? NO the ponds do NOT breed mosquitos due to the fish in them. There can be swarms of fruit fly's that people often mistake for mosquitos that's because the fruit gnats will come whenever the the wild fruit drops from the trees, mangos, avocados and such. But again, there are mosquitos all over Hawaii so get some repellent or wristbands and enjoy all the outdoors during your Big Island vacation.
We often see a beautiful and rare Hawaiian Hawk the 'Io (Pronounced...'Eo). She likes to come in the mornings and hunt crayfish out of the stream. Watch her from your morning breakfast table as she perches on one of the large stream boulders and enjoys her catch. There are only an estimated 1400 - 2100 of these beautiful birds of prey left in the world, most of those are on the Big Island. This lovely private property invites you to become 'one with the aina' (the land). The entire 2+ acres is it's own secluded valley and offers you absolute privacy. It cannot be seen by any other house and has only one private gated access. This vacation rental gives you the ultimate get away from it all experience without driving out to the middle of nowhere. NO 4-WD vehicle necessary. Although this is a tropical rainforest property we are NOT 'off the grid. This house has Hawaii County Water and Electricity, we are NOT dependent on solar panels, generators or catchment water as many stream and water feature properties are. Unfortunately there is No cable TV offered in this area and the valley is to tight for Satellite Dish reception but we do have an extensive collection (over 500 titles) of DVD's including many boxed HBO and TV Series. We offer free Wi-Fi internet access via Verizon Modem and Cradlepoint Wi-Fi router. Internet service is reliable but depends on a cellular connection and can be rather slow by todays standards. Not capable of streaming video or movies, but OK for checking your emails or Facebook. Remember....You're on vacation:) You may find cheaper rentals (usually with multiple houses on one property or owner onsite) and more expensive stream view rentals in downtown Hilo but they will be on much smaller parcels and surrounded by other houses; there's only one truly 100% private "Heaven's Door" Centrally located to all your sightseeing needs. The Hilo side of the Big Island is truly unique and offers unparalleled sightseeing. This property is close to numerous waterfalls; Umauma Falls & two different zip line adventures, are all a short 3-5 min. drive away, Kolekole Park (5 min.), Akaka and Kahuna Falls (10 min.), Rainbow Falls and Boiling Pots (35 min) and beautiful Onomea Bay as well as Onomea Botanical Gardens (10 min.), 25 minutes from the quaint historical Hilo Town and it's wonderful Hilo farmers market Wed. & Sat. are their big days but there are always a few vendors during the the rest of the week.
There are lots of new VRBO listings and many that have 5-Star reviews. You will never please all the people all the time but we have an outstanding 4.9 out of 5.0 rating with over 100 unsolicited reviews not just 5, 10 or 20 reviews.
So....Come...Share our piece of paradise and live your dream...Live Aloha
*Due to restrictions imposed by our insurance company, (ponds and stream), we cannot rent this property to anyone with children under the age of 18.
Many owners and property managers will not even mention the Coqui Tree Frog problem on the Big Island, but we believe in total honesty with our guests. All properties especially on the Hilo side of the Big Island have Coqui frogs. Unfortunately, they are just part of the entire Big Island these days, especially the Hilo side, they are even in the high rent $600+ per/nt vacation rentals. Coqui's are a small tree frog not native to Hawaii. Nothing to do with streams or ponds, they're a tree frog native to Puerto Rico where they have snakes that eat these small frogs. Hawaii having NO snakes provided a perfect "predator free" environment for these very small creatures to multiply. Coqui's are on the Kona side as well, likely fewer though because Kona is very hot, dry and baron of the vegetation they prefer. Coqui frogs "chip" at night, if you are a light sleeper you may not want to stay anywhere on the Big Island especially the Hilo side, except at higher, colder elevation (below 50°) or bring ear plugs to any rental you choose. We provide free individually packaged earplugs for you should you want them. Most people like the Coqui's and review them as, "charming", "part of the experience", "love the rainforest song" and many other positive descriptions.
