To our potential guests we say.....'Noho Ka Moe'uhane' or 'Live the dream'...If you are coming to the Hilo side of the Big Island to see waterfalls and experience the magnificent beauty of Hawaii's tropical wonders then this completely private and romantic property is for you. Save the beach experience for Maui, Kauai or Oahu. With a year round stream, small private lake teaming with fish and a second koi pond right outside your bedroom window this is the tropical Hawaii you only see in movies; unspoiled and totally private, just you and the sights, sounds and smells of a lush green tropical paradise. This home is located in one of the most pristine tropical areas on the Big Island called the 'Gold Coast' (only two minutes off the main highway). Passing through the gates, you drive along a private 425 foot long driveway surrounded by giant tree ferns, 100 ft. tall palms, wild mango and avocado trees and a beautiful year round spring fed stream. This is the first time since it was built that this unique private estate has ever been offered as a vacation rental. Don't settle for a B&B and/or sharing a home with owners or other guests on the same property. This gated 2 acre property is 100% private...Just you and nature. Come...Live Your Dream...Live Aloha (To Read More; click MORE DETAILS)

Heaven's Door has a lovely, 2/bedroom, 2/bath cedar home on it. It is the perfect romantic location for people who want to get away from it all. Fall asleep to the ramble of the stream running over the boulders and the sounds of the tropical jungle at night then wake to native Hawaiian birds singing and flitting from tree to tree in a stunning tropical forest. Heaven's Door is also very comfortable with 2 couples who want to enjoy the unique sights and sounds of a true jungle paradise.

Build a romantic fire in the fireplace or enjoy the private indoor cedar sauna (best with two but comfortable with four). The large master bedroom welcomes you with a comfy Pillow Top King size 'Perfect Sleeper' and in-suite master bath. Both bathrooms have full size tubs and showers. The second bedroom offers you a Queen Size pillow-top bed with a view of the lower pond and the sounds of 'liquid chatter' as the stream rambles by all year round. There is also a 'full size stacked' washer/dryer combo located inside the master bath suite. The master bedroom has a second koi pond just outside the large picture window where you can watch the koi. There is a beautiful year round stream that runs completely along the perimeter of the property it feeds a 79,000 gallon small lake, teaming with fish, both HUGE 30 year old Koi and GIANT Talapia, just outside the front door. You can feed the fish if you like, they do have two automatic fish feeders that dispense food to them twice daily but they always enjoy an extra treat from our guests. There is also an outdoor shower (cold only) for those who like to enjoy nature at its best.

Just outside your living room windows, across the pond there is a weeping wall, constantly running water down its rough lava face. These unique natural water features are often called 'Pele's Tears'. It is said of 'weeping walls' that 'Pele' the Hawaiian Fire Goddess who created the 'aina' (the land) is weeping for her children (the islands). We often see a beautiful and rare Hawaiian Hawk the 'Io (Pronounced...'Eo). She likes to come in the mornings and hunt crayfish out of the stream. Watch her from your morning breakfast table as she perches on one of the large stream boulders and enjoys her catch. There are only an estimated 1400-2100 of these beautiful birds of prey left in the Hawaiian Islands, most of those are here on the Big Island.

This lovely private property invites you to become 'one with the aina' (the land). The entire 2+ acres is it's own secluded valley and offers you absolute privacy. It cannot be seen by any other house and has only one private gated access. This vacation rental gives you the ultimate get away from it all experience without driving out to the middle of nowhere. We are close to the main Hwy. 19, very easy to find and NO 4-WD vehicle necessary. Although this is a tropical rainforest property we are NOT 'off the grid' like most similar water feature properties are. This house has Hawaii County Water and Electricity, we are NOT dependent on solar panels, generators or catchment water as many stream and water feature properties are. Unfortunately there is no cable TV offered in this area but we do have an extensive collection (over 300 titles) of DVD's including many boxed HBO and TV Series. We offer free Wi-Fi internet access via Verizon Modem and Cradlepoint Wi-Fi router. Internet service is reliable but depends on a cellular connection and can be rather slow by todays standards. Probably not capable of streaming video or movies, but OK for checking your emails or Facebook. Remember....You're on vacation:) You may find cheaper or more expensive rentals but there's only one "Heaven's Door"

Location...Location....Location...."Heaven's Door" is very centrally located to all your sightseeing needs. The Hilo side of the Big Island is truly unique and offers unparalleled sightseeing. This property is located just off Hwy. 19 and is close to numerous waterfalls; Umauma Falls & two different zip line adventures, are all a short 3 min. drive away, Kolekole Park (5 min.), Akaka and Kahuna Falls (10 min.), Rainbow Falls and Boiling Pots (25 min) and beautiful Onomea Bay as well as Onomea Botanical Gardens (10 min.) and only 20 minutes from the quaint historical Hilo Town. Pick up local fresh fruits and vegetables at the wonderful Hilo farmers market Wed. & Sat. are their big days but there are always a few vendors during the the rest of the week.

Take a drive up to Volcano's National Park and experience Madam Pele (Hawaiian Goddess of Fire) up close and personal. Hike out to where the 'Aina' (land) is being born as Kiluea flows hot molten lava into the ocean. Check with the Park Rangers before hiking and you can also get updates on lava flows, etc. at USGS.GOV then navigate to Hawaii Volcanos Natl. Park.

Come...Share our piece of paradise and live the Hawaii dream!

Due to the fact that some future guests may be allergic, this rental is Non-Smoking!

About The Owner

Ken and I retired from our lives on California's Central Coast in 1991 to move to Hawaii. Since then we have lived on Oahu's North Shore. We are fortunate to have our children and grandchildren also living here in the islands. We are active with multiple animal and children charities and are grateful to be living in such a special place.

The Owner purchased this house in 2006

Why The Owner chose Hilo District

Since we live full time on Oahu's North Shore we chose Heaven's Door as a second home for ourselves. Living on the beach is wonderful but we thought a tropical hideaway just a short 40 min. flight from Oahu would be the ideal getaway. One of the best things about Heaven's Door is that it is not dependent on solar or generators and it was indeed difficult to find a country property with a stream and water features that was actually 'on the grid' with County water and electricity. The search went on for 3 years to find this unique and pristine property but it was was well worth it.

What makes this house unique

Don't get me wrong, we love our home at the beach on Oahu, but going over to the quiet town of Hilo and the serenity of Heaven's Door is truly a Hawaiian experience even for those of us who live in Hawaii year round. I can't begin to describe the peace that comes over us when we get to Heaven's Door. There are no other sounds except the wind rustling the palm trees and the birds. At night my husband likes to listen to the frogs and crickets something we don't have at the beach. This tropical paradise is our favorite local getaway even though we spend a lot of our time there fixing, fine tuning and caring for the property. We are fortunate to have a wonderful caretaker who does the gardening and cleanings for us and only lives two miles away. I encourage you to experience Heaven's Door for yourself, you won't be disappointed. Check out the guest comments from other people just like yourself. Aloha Oe', Linda and Ken Martin

Jungle Paradise

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful property and was a fun, unique experience for us to stay. The driveway alone is enough to make it memorable. Think Indiana Jones / Jurassic Park. The location is a wonderful combination of "off the beaten path" and still close to "civilization". The home was furnished with everything needed to enjoy our time. It was a little chilly in the early mornings, but blankets were available (and the sauna!). Wireless was adequate for checking emails & texting. Anything else can and should wait! And to top it off, I was thrilled to see the Bond 50 blu-ray collection (although we only watched about 20 minutes of one Bond movie). Too much else to do.

We could not believe how lush and tropical the grounds are at Heaven's Door! The grounds are supreme (and private). Lots of birds, frogs and other animals. There is a beautiful stream running through the property that I enjoyed boulder hopping down. The pond fish were fun to watch, especially the predator fish. Once I found him, he kept an eye on me at all times! This is a beautiful, beautiful place. Location is excellent to explore the Hamakua Coast - so many wonderful drives and places to see.

Communication with Linda was excellent and having stayed at another of her properties, we know that she has an eye for exceptional locations. Staying at Heaven's Door will be one of the enduring experiences of our Big Island vacation. Thank you (and we hope you get feeling better soon, Linda :)

Owner's Response: Aloha I'm glad that you've got to experience two of our unique rental properties now. What a wonderful review, I think you covered everything. I love the part about Indiana Jones meets Jurassic Park and the predator fish that keeps an eye on you. Indeed he does, you are the only thing in his world that's bigger than him:) Heaven's Door does have an "Exceptional Location", since it is off the beaten path and still close to civilization (a short 20 min. drive to downtown Hilo); believe me those types of properties are hard to find:) I look forward to seeing you on a future trip to Hawaii and thank you for the well wishes for my health. Wonderful Stay, Amazing Property

  • 5 of 5

Heaven's Door is an amazing property. We loved staying here and hated leaving. The house was clean and neat as a pin and everything was well maintained. The owner, Linda, was a joy to work with and very accommodating. We had so much fun exploring the gorgeous grounds, which are amazing. The Koi ponds are beautiful and the lush rain forest foliage is breathtaking. There were so many beautiful tropical flowers in bloom too. It was a short trip to Hilo and there is lots to see and do in the area. We truly enjoyed our stay here and hope to have the opportunity to return someday!

Owner's Response: Aloha: Thank you for your wonderful review. We're so very happy that you enjoyed Heaven's Door and the rainforest for your Hawaii experience. I was happy to hear that your home in Cape Coral, Florida was not damaged severely during Hurricane Irma. We hope you will return to Heaven's Door someday on a future trip. Mahalo, Linda and Ken

Wonderful vacation getaway.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here a little over a year ago and we knew then that we would have to come back.  We were thriled that everything was exactly as we remembered it.  Feeding the Koi and tilapia in the pond never gets old, I still get a kick out of it.  The lush driveway and grounds are absolutely beautiful.  The house was clean and well maintained as usual and it’s nice that the owners provide toiletries the same as hotels do (shampoo, conditioner, body wash, etc.) those items and the washer/dryer combo in the master suite make it easy to travel with just a carry on case.

The owner did mention to me that she was frustrated by a “fabricated” recent review that said there were torn screens as well as lots of mosquitos outside.  This was not the case a year ago, nor was it the case on this trip. I was curious about the screens and had to make a thorough check for myself. I checked each screen, none of the screens were torn or damaged and frames were snuggly fitted with no gaps. So, one has to wonder? There is no standing water outdoors and there was no issues with insects in or out of the house.

I was really surprised last year when I researched this property.  The reviews were staggering almost 100% of them were 5-star and they all spoke of it being better than described.  We went into this last year not knowing if it was really as good as advertised. Folks, its even better!

It’s located up the Hamakua Coastline and gives you the feeling that you’re on an island all to yourself when in reality you are only 20 minutes from downtown Hilo.  The internet's slow but vacationing in Hawaii and being in this pristine rainforest makes it part of getting away from it all, well worth it.  The same herons are still here trying to fish out tilapia that weigh nearly as much as they do.  This place is indeed a “hidden gem” as so many reviews have noted, I hope we will return for many years to come.  If you're looking for a true value and want to experience the real feeling of Hawaii, this is the place for you. We’re absolutely thrilled with the home and it's surroundings.

Owner's Response: Aloha Steve: Wow, this is indeed the year for return guests, I guess that in itself is a testament to what a special place Heaven's Door really is. Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed review...again, I just looked back at your first review from June 2016 it too was very informative. It's important to potential guests to get detailed and accurate reviews since there are so many vacation rentals to choose from these days. Heaven's Door awaits you on a future trip to the Big Island, if you ever get over to Oahu's North Shore please let us know, we would love to meet you. Mahalo, Linda and Ken

Another round of paradise!

  • 5 of 5

2nd time staying at Heaven's Door and it was just as wonderful, if not better, than the 1st time. This property is absolutely gorgeous and stocked with everything a person could possibly need and then some. Linda left directions and helpful notes all around the property so we were aware of everything. We loved the mornings and evenings on the lanai, just watching the fish and birds. The frogs at night were like a lullaby to us. Papaaloa Country Store & Cafe were 7 miles down the road and I have to say, the cafe is excellent! We ate there 3 times during our stay since we were so pooped from all the sight seeing and didn't want to venture into Hilo. The location is perfect for doing all the historical sites as well as Volcano National Park. We did receive a call about the screens (as noted in the previous review of 4 stars) but found no screens torn, ripped or any other defect to them. We had no bugs or mosquitoes in the house at all. The entire property really is Heaven. We enjoyed feeding the fish every morning and evening. The hawk on the property is so cool to watch every day as he sits on his perch watching the fish. It really is your own wilderness. We will totally be back to this property. You can't keep us away. Linda is an absolute joy to work with. She responds immediately and truly does care about each guest's experience. I wish she was the manager of all the properties we rent when visiting the islands! We highly recommend staying at Heaven's Door for a real Hawaiian experience. We look forward to returning ourselves!

Owner's Response: Aloha Thank you for coming back to Heaven's Door for your second visit and for all the kind words about our property and my efforts. I'm glad that your parents were able to come with you this time to experience the Big Island. I appreciate your confirming that the guest comment that was left just prior to your arrival was just totally not true and that there are no torn/broken screens and no issues with mosquitos inside/out. I had never heard this from any other guest and perhaps she got our property mixed up with another rental they stayed at since there were going several places. We hope that you come back for many years to come and that you always find it to be a very special place. Let me know when you're ready to move to Hawaii from Las Vegas and I'll sell Heaven's Door to you:) Mahalo, Linda and Ken

Rainforest Experience

  • 4 of 5

This is a lush property set in the rainforest and close to many waterfalls. Beautiful area! We've stayed in many rental homes throughout the islands and this is a great jungle experience--reminded us of Hana area on Maui. Its also in close proximity to Hilo and great base camp for exploring the East side of the island. Keep in mind it's about 20-25 minutes from Hilo, not as close as VRBO map suggests and 1 hour from Volcano.

The only negative was mosquitoes our group was practically eaten alive haha. I had at least 20 bites in 2 days even after using repellent--yikes! Some screens in the bedrooms are broken and could use repairs to keep them out at night. But what can you do, its the rainforest & part of the experience! :)

Owner's Response: I was stunned when I read this review saying there were broken screens in the bedrooms! I live on Oahu, so I called our caretaker/cleaner and she said this was absolutely not true. Somewhat confused, I then called the current guests staying at Heaven's Door, they arrived the day after this guest checked-out. They also said that there are no broken, torn or ripped screens anywhere in the entire house and that they have had no problems with mosquitos, inside or outside??? There is no standing water and there are no more mosquitos at Heaven's Door than anywhere else in the islands. We pride ourselves in keeping a very clean and well maintained property both inside and out as evidenced by our 69 fantastic 5-Star reviews. Mahalo, Linda and Ken

Heavens Door, Hilo Hawaii

  • 4 of 5

May 2017,

Our month long stay at Heavens Door was amazing.Living in the rain forest was quite and experience. The rain was minimal and mostly at night. Day time the weather was beautiful. This is a very special place surrounded by lush tropical forest. The sound of the stream and natures creatures were awesome. The large pond full of talapia and koy was great entertainment.

This is truly an island unto itself. There are lots of sites & beaches nearby and a zipline only 3 miles up the road. Great restaurants in town and the helicopter flight over the volcanoes was awesome. You wont be disappointed.

Owner's Response: Aloha Mike: Thank you for the review of your extended 4 week stay. Most guests never get to spend that much time "living in a rainforest". We're pleased that you enjoyed your stay at Heaven's Door. I'm sure potential guests appreciate your tips on the zip lines and the helicopter tour:) Mahalo, Linda and Ken
